This is such a rich, interesting and thorough exploration. It shows so clearly how the Golden Dawn titles align or don't align with the images and generally understood meanings of the cards.Really helpful to have the overview at the end so that your thoughts are summarised. Lots of food for thought. I'm feeling a lot less frustrated about the ambivalence between what I see in the images and the established meanings and beginning to see how that uncertainty could be helpful in reading a spread where the nature of the cards will interact with each other. Thanks again for this and I'm looking forward to the final part of the series.

It is interesting you connected your Mara Lunne to being a pilgrim -- in Dreya Blume's book on pentacles she notes that Waite called the figures in the 5 of Pentacles 'mendicants,' ie. associated with a religious order and having taken vows of poverty. She relates this to the Franciscan friars who renounced property, in part from a standpoint of being critical of the Church amassing wealth. I found this interesting - a different take on what exactly is doing the 'disruption' in that card.

Ooh, I like this! And I have heard similar analogies from other tarot writers, so I don't take credit for the idea, but I have experienced it in readings.

Yes, as the phrase goes, out of the Comfort Zone and into the Challenge Zone, where we learn. Thanks for your comment.

I love these videos and your insightful commentary; there is always more to consider and to learn with tarot, even after years and years of reading the cards. On reconciling the Hierophant with some of the more negative meanings of the five - I also use your definition of five as change and disruption, and in that vein I found an interesting insight in something Crowley (!) said. He saw the Hierophant as initiation by which the individual becomes united with the Universe. The form and doctrine *change* with each world age, and thus with this new age, the Hierophant is due to change as well. Six of Cups - I had a reading in which this card focused on the innocence of childhood and was read - "giving in innocence without agenda". I really liked that. And for fun - for the 7 of Swords, PCS drew the scene almost verbatim from Henry V, Act IV, prologue. The figure is the amourer whose work gives "a dreadful note of preparation" before the big battle of Agincourt.

And I appreciate your commentary as well Donna. Thank you for those insights. For my own spiritual practice, I would posit that form changes but doctrine does not, if it is based in equanimity and compassion. The truth is still the truth, but methods of teaching and learning do change with changes in culture. I do LOVE that Six of Cups interpretation - innocence and selflessness are more universal themes than "nostalgia" I think. And that's interesting about the 7 of Swords as well. I knew Pamela Coleman Smith drew from theater for many of her illustrations so that makes complete sense.

@@WaterChildTarot I agree with you entirely. I used the word 'doctrine' synonymously to 'dogma' - the teachings, beliefs, rules, etc. of any particular religious group vs. the bigger picture Truth. One hopes a group's doctrine is indeed based in equanimity and compassion.

Fascinating, this blew my mind, gave me a whole new perspective of our internal battle between (spiritual evolved empathy) vs (spiritually unevolved ego) reminds me of how when God humbles us and we learn a valuable lesson of what spiritual freedom truly means. 😮 thank you for this. All the minor cards have two perceptions of the hierophant vs devil aspects, wands: when we become to forceful wanting our way/devil aspect: we learn allowing others first is important allowing others there space to be. Cups: we can sometimes get addicted to feeling sorry for ourselves (devil) that we refuse to see the way forward (hierophant faith), swords our mind ego can get addicted to power over others (devil) that we don’t realize we need new ideas hierophant to succeed. Pentacles: the poverty of our pride can cause us to refuse help devil, but we are always welcome into the arms of God (help) hierophant
