The three of swords is the odd one out because 3s are about growth. The 3 of swords is growth through mental pain.

I believe its also Saturn in Libra. Which makes sense because Saturn is about discipline and boundaries that teach us lessons. Same with 7 of Pentacles being Saturn In Taurus. This is all what brought me to Crowleys deck as it actually is the only one that makes sense where everything fits together. It's rich in symbolism too which makes it extremely powerful and accurate to work with. Edit: as for the keywords they make the most sense in thoth. Instead of Peace Restored in 2oS for example, it's just Peace, because nothing has happened at the 2 yet to be restored. If anything that'd be more accurate for the 4.

In a way her reading style is rebellious by being more traditional. If you look at traditional cartomancy systems like Lenormand, kipper cards, Gypsy Witch cards, they were pretty blunt

Pre-loaded information. This is a good synopsis. It baffled me when starting to read the cards and felt I'd never get how to relate to the cards. What does the card mean as it seemed (not really) to be all over the place. Came to understand there are schools of thought on how to read each card. And yes, different ways to read a card. Pick one or blend? Thank you for the 7 points.

Actually having cards with meanings like brunette woman or blond man makes perfect sense from the perspective of old school playing card cartomancy, since one way of choosing a significator was based on gender and hair color

I also don't like the linear approach using the next sequential Major Arcana year after year. I like to draw a Major Arcana either randomly or purposefully for the year; it helps me open my mind to new ideas! Last year I learned more about the Empress card, and this year I've gotten the Hierophant. I've been more mindful of when I feel defensive and when I could benefit from outside knowledge. Adding your spread to my spread library!

I also started collecting South Asian and South-East Asian decks early on in my tarot journey, and have only recently come to the realization that it's time to cull my library. Despite being South Asian myself and loving Japanese decks especially, I don't *actually* reach for them for readings. Like you, I've enjoyed poring over the images and trying to learn as much about them as possible, and the thrill of the chase was a great motivator. But it will also feel good to clear up some space from my shelves and storage boxes. Glad to know I'm not alone in this category!

Hmmm... I might have to get my grubby little hands on that Il Menaghello version. The brightness of the colours is absolutely delicious (although I do like the colourful backgrounds in some of the cards from Scarabeo's Tarot of the Master and Tarot Renacentista (shame about their faces though).

This video may date back four years but WOW am I glad to have stumbled across it when I did! I've been teeter-tottering back and forth over whether to get the I Naibi for years now, and decided to look for walkthroughs online... And your video has been most helpful! Like you, I don't tend to lean towards Renaissance-style decks (or Medieval for that matter), but there is something so captivating and whimsical about Vacchetta's Naibi. Hearing all the nuggets of knowledge you've shared here has only whet my appetite further, so thank you! I've also downloaded the black and white version of the card images you shared and am sorely tempted to colour my own version of the deck. I wish I could print the b&w onto watercolour paper so I could do it in the medium I prefer, but it's much too thick for my printer. Mayhaps I'll give it a go on some Tomoe River paper (used in Hobonichi journals; watercolour and fountain pen ink friendly!), then scan them and print them out via Make Playing Cards? I'd love to know if you ended up colouring your own version! Thanks again for sharing your wealth of information with the Internet, I'm ever so grateful (:

This is the first video of yours I’ve seen and I loved it. Yep, as others have stated I also want to see how others interpret and use their tarot tools vs just a flip through (though that has its place). I’m a dietitian (though not YOUR dietitian 😊) with Hashi’s myself. I’m glad your doc is open minded; that is not always the case. I found Izabella Wentz’s work helpful. Love your attitude about it’s not losing fav foods but letting go of foods that harm and embracing ones that heal. I had a GI doctor tell me, “your food choices have nothing to do with your gut health” once I wasn’t positive for Celiac. That’s when I knew I’d have to help myself and a food and symptom journal helped SO much! Debilitating joint pain, migraines and insomnia all greatly improved with the removal of my problem foods. Then I found a great integrative doc who helped me get even healthier. Food sensitivity testing helped me clean diet up even more and I started using that tool with clients with great results. Loved your interpretation of the 7 of Pentacles. 💚I’m a new baby herbalism student as well so adding another layer of healing. Great video. Best to you on your healing journey.

I'm so pleased that you reviewed this book. It was my first Tarot book - in the original Penguin Books edition and is responsible - more than any other - for sparking my interest in the Tarot that I'm obsessed with 46 years later! It was mainly known in Britain I suspect. Just to clarify: it was the son of Alfred Douglas's partner who was the artist i.e. David Sheridan. Alfred was steeped in the world of esoterica with a direct lineage to the Golden Dawn order via his teacher. David wasn't familiar with Tarot, despite his mother's interest, but he learned as he went along. I read that Alfred was very particular in his guidance about the majors, but gave David a bit more leeway with the minors; it shows! He died quite young, sadly, but he worked with Alfred over 4 years to draw the Tarot images for the book. After the book was finished they then decided to publish a coloured version of the deck, which I have, including the restored version which came out a few years ago. The original deck is valuable and very collectable. At the time it came out the book was probably the best introduction one could read, striking a good balance between being scholarly, but not dry and dull. Over the years, some of the things he writes, we now know are not really right, but in retrospect, most of it still holds up remarkably well; the mistakes are few. He was going to update the text in a new revised version, but his wife was trying to get him to produce a totally new book. It still hasn't happened though and I'm not sure it ever will as Alfred must be quite an old man now. I don't know if he would make many changes in the cards if he could find a sympathetic artist to work with. Also, the deck is still one of my favourites, despite its simplicity and some poorly drawn and weird cards. When it's good (mainly the majors, which are still some of the finest in my opinion), it's very, very good. The minors are very hit and miss as are the Court cards, which are a bit superficial in my opinion. Thank you for a fair review of a book that is close to my heart.

Hi. As the first to comment, I'd like to thank you for reviewing this book. If you enjoyed it and haven't already got hold of a copy, I highly recommend his Mystical Origins of the Tarot. For me, it's the best current overview and history of the Tarot. Not overly dry and academic, but rigorous and readable. I have this deck. Its an important one, but i don't really love it and it wouldn't be my go to if I'm honest. In my reading I stopped using a significator years ago and have come full circle with pips or pictorial decks. Also, I just use the 3 card spread now. No reversals. It's enough. I started with a pip deck, moved to RWS for most of my 48 years and have now gone back to pips cards for many reasons. As someone who has been studying the Tarot for a long time, I have to say you have come an incredibly long way in a short time. Super impressed with your understanding and insights. Your presentation skills in these videos is excellent too. I think I need to take lessons from you! Every day is a school day with Tarot 😊

I love unfair comparison videos!! These two together make such a great pair, side by side. What a bummer that the cardstock and borders have changed with the different editions/publishers. I've got a copy of the newer edition with blue borders, and yessirree the cardstock is so stiff 😭 I agree that a few cards seem kinda new age-y and not my vibe, although I WAS surprised that other cards really clicked with me. I love that the guidebook for Great Outdoors is informative, like in the 6 of Vessels excerpt about boats and manatees.

Great comparison and extra background info. I love the colors of the Diverse TDM, and the English wording. I wish it was more easily available. I appreciate that it exists but almost wish there was one that was more true to the original line work and characters, but with these excellent color pallettes! Either way I will still probably get one. That is just my traditionalist vs modernist FOMO flaring up. I just don't want to end up with 100 tarot decks, I just want one that I love! Right now I have a mini Thoth deck. I think between these two I will have a good combo. Thanks again for the video.

A great comparison. I think both these decks do a number of things well: both have diversity that feels meaningful, both feel very relatable to me / look like aspects of my everyday life, and both feel contemporary/modern without feeling stuck in time or like they'll feel dated quickly -- Gaian I feel like has held up quite well for the most part in this regard, and I think Great Outdoors will continue to feel relevant. For the most part, I do think that Great Outdoors has a good LWB and could be a great beginner deck for that reason, and I also appreciate that environmental considerations were taken into account in producing it. I really wish that Gaian would come back out in a better stock than the current Schiffer one; I think it is a really nice deck to read with and feel like a lot of people don't end up getting it because that sticky glossy stock and massive borders put them off, which is a shame.

Thanks for watching. I agree Great Outdoors could be a good beginner deck, though I hadn't thought about it in that way before. Hm, I can think of a few people I might gift it to!

Cool comparison. Interesting overlap in colors and some postures. They would read great together! And cheesy ness is so subjective. I actually find the Great Outdoors cheesy at least some of the people. It’s amazing what Colbert achieved with colored pencils. I struggled with the new age aspects of the Gaian tarot but then I realized it was my jaded gen x outlook 😅
@WaterChildTarot9 ай бұрын
Thank you Renee. I do like the colors in both these decks and I agree, cheese is a completely subjective feeling. I'm 100% with you on the jaded Gen X outlook and stumble over a lot of tarot books for that reason.

Thank you for creating this wonderful video. So interesting to compare the decks. To be honest, I have an issue with Knight of Swords throwing the dynamite; he's more precise and thoughtful than that!
@WaterChildTarot9 ай бұрын
Hi Rich, thanks for stopping by! I appreciate your kind words. It's interesting that your commentary of the Knight of Swords points out accuracy. At first I struggled with the elemental association - dynamite being more "fire" oriented for me, even the TNT being in "stick" form. But I can associate this via shock waves that travel through the air to accomplish the goal. I assume that using dynamite would take quite a bit of precision to create an accurate and safe effect.

I am living for this series!! You might really like the book Cartomancy in Folk Witcher by Roger Horne. The author spends much of the book aligning numerology with both tarot and playing cards and there are some great interpretations that are similar to yours. Thank you for all of the cool content you create!

A difficult thing is that the Thoth deck has different meanings for a few cards. Most notably 10 of cups has a negative meaning in Thoth, Crowley has a distressing reading of it. The Liber T Tarot of the Stars Eternal illustrates its bleakest reading, if you know you know. I think Waite refers to a bad harvest or something like that in his book about the 7 of Pentacles. He is also influenced by Etteilla a lot, you might want to also compare those decks.
@WaterChildTarot10 ай бұрын
Ah thank for the insights. Weird that the 10 of cups seems so negative to Crowley & so positive to Waite. Perhaps the difference between one person who saw himself a free-thinking master of secrets and the other who embraced a more traditional family life?

This was such an interesting series, I've already watched it twice and I'm sure I'll come back to it again at some point 😊! I have this problem of wanting to read marseille style (using numerology), but not liking visually any of the marseille or pip decks, modern or traditional, so I'm stuck with the RWS decks and always having trouble connecting the meanings to the pictures 😅. Fortunately I managed to purchase the Spacious Tarot just recently and I think that might be the deck I've been searching for... Anyway, this series has been really helpful and given me lots to think about, thank you 🖤!!
@WaterChildTarot10 ай бұрын
I’m glad you found it interesting and thank you for your kind comments. I encourage you to develop your own keywords for the numbers and see how they might pair with the standard images. You’ve also hit on the reason I don’t necessarily read with RWS decks when I want fully scenic images. Decks like the Star Seeker, Cosmic Tarot, Spacious Tarot and Fifth Spirit are more neutral in the way some scenes are depicted, allowing you to develop your own interpretation based on the reading itself rather than proscribed, and often harsh, images. Have fun exploring!
