From a public and media perspective, United Airlines hasn’t been having a great 2024 thus far. Indeed, when examining incidents logged by The Aviation Herald and other sites, the Star Alliance carrier has already experienced a long list of incidents - many of which required diversions. In fact, there were SO many incidents within a short period of time that the FAA decided to review the airline’s operations...

It's hard to make anything of this without knowing what the number of comparable incidents was last year or what it is for an airline relative to its size during a comparable period.

On a related question: How many or what percentage of senior maintenance personnel retired/quit from United during COVID? United's incidents may be a reflection of a "brain drain" within the carrier.

@hefoxed

Yea, both pandemic work stoppages and Boeing max stoppages have added delays to both carriers Retirements of more experienced, better paid people and reduced flight volume during pandemic means also means likely less experienced maintenance (based on a comment on someone claiming to be in airline maintenance, people were encouraged to retire early during pandemic to save the airlines money) Also could be possible cost cutting, where less experienced/worst paid people are favoured over more experienced people. Not sure if that's happening with United, it's happening in a lot of industries tho Then there is also possibly out sourcing to less experienced and regulated areas to save money. So, less experienced maintenance maintaining more aircraft more prone to break.

For the most part, except for hitting the manhole, it seems to be maintenance issues. All pilots landed their planes safely. So maybe United need to update their maintenance procedures and perhaps hire a few more staff if it's a workload issue. Obviously, this is a purely speculative thought process from me and would be willing to be corrected if I'm wrong.

Opinion: this carrier did not follow recommended procedures for storing aircraft during the pandemic for economic reasons. Now, such aircraft are failing more frequently than other carriers after return to normal duty cycles.

Why all this bad news about United? Why not a positive note about United? Did you know that United may be the world's DEI champion among airlines in 2024, for instance? Since 2021 United has been working hard to achieve this remarkable success. In an official statement on United's website we can read: "Our purpose-driven commitment to DEI is the right thing to do-and it's an essential driver of our growth and sustainable financial success.” Everyone saying they won't fly on United now is therefor racist or a bigot or phobic towards certain minorities, supporter of the patriarchy.

Kinda hard to support them when they don’t seem to really care about making their flights safe for their passengers this airline is infamous for having long lines of customers complaining, from all these maintenance issues to the time a United passenger was beat up and dragged off the plane unconscious for refusing to give up the seat he paid for to United airlines employees when the airline made a mistake and needed to send some people on a fully booked flight. Dunno about you but I prefer airlines where they don’t treat my physical safety like a game of hit and miss.

United's obsession with DEI is just one of their problems. Another is generational. Young people working or flying for an airline do not have the same discipline and attention to detail my generation had. They learned in public school that you do not have to get the right answer to make the honor roll, since close is good enough. That does not work in the aviation business. I was a pilot for United for 29 years, 1986-2015 and in those years, we aspired to excelence in every job position from pilot to mechanic and more. Not happening today.
