This is a good reason bartenders have a baseball bat under the bar. A good ash or maple bat would do well. A Louisville Slugger, please. Oooh! Make a nunchucks out of two souvenir bats! The short ones about half the length of a professional bat. You can get them with famous signatures on them like Ernie Banks or Ralph Garr. Companies put their logos on them to hand out. I got one from a company picnic one year.

Would have liked to see the dumb-chuck vs a normal stick on the same targets under the same conditions myself - as the dumb-chuck clearly has still got control issues, durability is perhaps also going to remain a problem even with a more refined version. So to be 'Fairly useable' may be accurate, if you limit your targets to the brainless, not reactive targets that will sit there while you drill a new hole in the backup hammer. But actually calling them a weapon... For that title I think they would have to out damage the stick pretty substantially (which I really don't think they will). Against a resisting opponent getting a good hit in would be rather more challenging with the very short broken stick nature, so it would have to be a really really good hit. Ultimately the winning move is clearly to make it longer stick one side, heavy head the other, giving you some reach again. At which point you do just have a flail...

@@Niskirin I'll have to upload a video on it, but yes, most people do not understand how to fight with nunchucks, you have a lot of people flipping them, that's good, but its not the same thing as fighting with them. For a start, you use lighter wood, most of the performance chucks now you see people whipping around really fast, that's light thin wood, but its still a strong wood and will do damage. If you use, say a rattan or bamboo wood, its quite light, so its speed is going to be very fast when striking, but it won't break, very strong.

Seriously, why would you block the stick-part of a flail and not the head? A flail only gets past a shield if the shield is placed conveniently so that the head can clear it AND it only matters if the head is able to reach far enough down the back of the shield to hit the arm/shoulder/head of the person behind the shield. I'm no expert, but if you were a soldier (not some untrained commoner, like me) and saw an opponent swinging a flail at you, would you just put the shield in a static position and wait for the flail to come over it OR would you actively be blocking the damaging flail head to negate it altogether, the same as you would any other weapon?
@ProfX501
@ProfX501 Жыл бұрын
@@JarieSuicune Compare a flail to a polearm of equivalent length (or a sword in the case of a one-handed weapon). With a polearm, parrying the haft would stop the head of the weapon. To block the head of a flail, you’d need to move your shield much further in the same amount of time, and into a very awkward position. It’s also not always easy to gauge the position of a flail head on a flexible chain as it’s travelling.

I have some ideas to improve the hammer-chucks. Screw pommels on the ends of nun-chuks, so you can end your opponents rightly. They'd have to be pretty big and heavy pommels though. You could also just use maces instead of hammers. This would get rid of most of the accuracy problems, as most maces are symmetrical on all sides. EDIT: I made this comment before you mentioned maces at the end.

I think if you were trying to improve the Nunchuck, without discarding the basic design, you would add heavy metal caps to the end of each stick. Perhaps the caps could be studded, flanged or ribbed in a similar way to many maces, the other major improvement I could see would be the inclusion of some mechanism that allows the user to affix the two halves... y'know... making a stick. The problem is, both those suggestions negate the only perceivable advantage of the nunchuck, that it is a simple, cheap weapon, that doesn't look much like a weapon. Alternatively one could light each end of the 'chuck on fire, spin them around as a form of intimidation, and then, while they are distracted... kick'em in the junk, and run.

Here, I'll ruin the surprise - the nunchucks were dead for hundreds if not thousands of years. Nunchucks are the typewriters of weapons in an internet age. They're the horse driven buggy in a world where we have cars. Bruce Lee, yes that Bruce Lee also rightly mocked them. Only reason they're around in popular media is because of a ninja turtle cartoon. Also, nunchucks do not telescope, and we're not talking about effective weapons like batons. Stay on topic, please.

The thing is, nunchucks aren’t really offensive weapons so much as defensive weapons. When I was a kid I did shaolin gung fu, and the drills we ran with nunchucks was to tangle them around a sword, get in close, disarm the opponent, and then basically handcuff the opponent with the nunchucks (and with the cord wrapped around your wrist, and someone yanking on the handles, they had a good amount of leverage and could really manhandle you with not a lot of effort)

Basically, combine the operating mechanism of chucks with the striking mechanism of flails, maces and morningstars.

When I was a teen, we made Nunchucks with oak that was tapered from the striking end towards the string/chain end. Then we would drill a 1 inch hole or so in the striking end and fill it with molten lead and seal the end well. Your untapered versions were what we called "trainer chucks". The tapered chucks, even without the extra weight, were visibly more damaging than the "trainer" style. As for the performance between stick and chucks, I never learned to swing the sticks, but the chucks could fit in my pants and hide.

Tyranth, here's a simple machining idea for your "Flail Chucks" that don't look like you spent 10 minutes at the Hardware store. On the end of your standard Wooden Nun-Chucks, have a simple Spherical Metal Ball that is "Screwed In" to the base of your Wooden Nun-Chucks. That should create the "Flail Chucks" that you want. Finding a Metal Sphere Ball & Standard Screw Thread should be easy enough for a machinist like you. For the flexible linkage, use Dyneema Rope. That should give you superior rope flexibility & strength using modern fibers

You got very lucky, that the metal hammers didn't chip or even explode, when you hit them together like in the beginning. I cringed every time you did that. Hammers like this are hardened tool steel, that can have imperfections and internal stresses - especially cheap ones like yours - that can be triggered/released, if you hit them together. The resulting "explosion" can be VERY violent and fast sharp metal chips can be flying around. Check out "WHY YOU DON'T HIT HARDENED STEEL!!!!!" by Alec Steele.

This has been done before; it's called a flail. Once you add a head, the handle on that end serves no purpose (and the head on the handle end reduces the striking radius / velocity / energy). A mace head would work better because the hammer head is too random: the head or claw concentrates force, while the side spreads force out more than the tip of real nunchaku.

There is the speculation that it was invented from a working tool for field work. If that´s true than it would be a cheap self defense weapon for poor people which can be hidden and taken along all the time. And for those who say that you can also take a stick with you...look at your home town and tell me how many people are carrying sticks. I personally don´t like nunchucks and agree they are very often harmful to the owner himself but with proper training it also has it´s advantages.

Regarding weapon spinning, there is a practical training reason. Whether stick or blade, it's a form of arm conditioning. Hand grip, wrist flexibility and shoulder endurance all get developed by the 'silly, show-offy' twirling. Also, the user familiarizes with the weight and balance of the particular weapon.

Remember the reason nunchucks were important is for their ability to hide their true intention. Two small sticks and a piece of rope is not instantly recognisable as a weapon, just as you'll find most "Ninja weapons" are usualy a range of simple farming tools. Being able to transport two claw hammers and a rope is the exact type of thing that would be used by modern ninjas.

It's not just that it isn't easily recognizable, it's that a folded nunchaku isn't even visible in the first place in traditional Japanese/Okinawan wear - whether by putting it inside the wide sleeves, into the wide obi(sash) or simply along the hem inside of the chest-portion of the kimono. The likely real reason for nunchaku to exist is as a "concealed weapon with a reach equalizer to a sword". Carrying a staff openly takes away the element of surprise, while a short stick doesn't provide the necessary length to face an attacker with a blade. The nunchaku, though unwieldy is the best compromise they could think of. It's also actually a really great tool for scaring away/fighting off wild animals.

I took a broken sledgehammer and removed the head and then I tied a parachord braid to the hammer head. A ten pound sledgehammer. Now I could rest the hammerhead on top of my shoulder and the braid is as long as my forearm. Now if I simply throw a jab, that hammerhead will be yanked off the top of my shoulder, and it will fly straight forward until it meets the end of that rope, which makes it Crack like a whip. With a bit of practice, you can reliably weild such a weapon without hurting yourself. It can also be thrown quite accurately at short distances, and it took me about 3 hits (22 seconds) to knock off a car door (I'm 5'11" and weigh 180 lbs). Although I've never used this against a living creature, it's obvious this would one shot anything shy of an elephant.

Interesting point on the implied use of these abominations: In Germany they are (comically) a "banned weapon", illegal to possess, produce, sell, purchase. But in official legal language they are called "Würgehölzer" which translates to "choke logs". In that lies the only really feasible use of these things: to get the sticks around the opponent's neck and choke him. At any rate, though: Hail to the mighty stick. The stick is good. The stick is vital for weapon development. Almost every weapon is a stick of some sort. Even the basic tool is merely a stick with a modified working end. The stick will bring order to the cosmos.

I think one of the reasons the hammer chucks did somewhat well is because of focusing the kinetic energy on a point and transferring that rather than rebounding like regular nunchucks. Now a warhammer would likely do this better.. kind of cementing the idea that nunchucks are a 'broken stick'. Which is why I want to bring up the subject on flails. Flails kind of take the idea of putting the weight on the end of a rope/chain to the next stage. Which will do like the hammer chucks and focus the energy a bit more efficiently. But you could make the same claim that doing away with the chain/rope and just having a rigid handle like for a mace would be better. This would be pretty much correct. You would be able to impart more force per strike with a regular mace over a flail. However just like you would spear someone with a spear... flailing with a flail is what I believe is the preferred way to fight with a flail. One of the few advantages a flail has over other more rigid weapons is that it can be flailed with. It seems so obvious but its something I think is overlooked. The amount of kinetic feedback is almost none with a flail. So this allows for faster follow up strikes especially considering you do not need to follow through with each strike for maximum damage like you would for just about any other weapon. Of course I am speaking of the one handed variant, its pretty well established that the two-handed flail was pretty effective for some of the same reasons as well as others. But in either case, I don't believe the flail is as bad as a weapon as the nunchuku or similar double headed non rigid linked weapon.

Nunchukua are derivative of the flail used for farming. One side was traditionally longer to avoid your hands being damaged. A metal band applied to the end on nunchucks make them a portable flail. Force is mass times velocity. You are swinging a fulcrum in an arc, effectively becoming the focal point on the radius of a circle (your swing). The point where the weapon is moving the fastest is at the very end. So that spot also would carry the greatest force. Adding weight (like a hammer head) to the end of the fulcrum moves the center of mass (the point where the greatest percentage of the mass of the item can come into play) towards that higher-velocity point. Not only are you increasing the mass and so potential force, but you are also moving that sweet-spot of impact forward to make more efficient use of that mass. So you effectively gain twice. More mass, More useable potential of that mass, moved to the higher potential velocity of that mass.

I have an idea for another test, maybe this will get your interest. I own a rope "nunchucks". Which are basically one solid piece of thick rope, wraped in hard plastic from both sides, leaving only a short exposed piece of rope in the middle which imitates the link. They basically feel like a more sturdy variant nunchucks and I think they work much better in terms of kinetic linking, the risk of hitting yourself is reduced, they still can be somewhat folded and concealed, they are much harder to break than normal nunchucks and crafting them by yourself is not a rocket science (might be even easier than regular ones). And if by any chance nunchucks are banned in your country and the law defines them as something like: "sticks linked together by chain or elastic material", then guess what. Rope nunchucks don't fit this definition and are 100% legal.

There was enough chaos in early Japan that peasant wound up finding ways to turn their farming tools into self defense weaponry. Nunchaku were rice flails, kama were harvesting sickles, tonfa were mill stone handles, kunai were planting trowels, and sai were used to stand up and bundle the rice stalks after cutting them. (they should be competing with farm tools, not dedicated weapons) P.S. your "Mjolnir Nunchucks" are closer to a real nunchaku than what you see in most karate classes. Go to a single head of about half the size of yours on a shaft about half the length of the handle, cord length should be long enough to freely swing, but short enough you can't catch your fingers between handle and head. (Now you have a slightly less terrible weapon, and a fully functional grain flail!!) P.P.S. weaponized farming tools is a very deep and very bizarre rabbit hole to fall down - after 3 decades the bottom is still nowhere in sight.

Mace-chucks were my immediate thoughts to optimize the design as soon as I saw the hammer-chucks. Much more versatility due to its strikes being essentially omnidirectional without the risk of striking through the flat side. One way I would see this type of hammer head working is if the chain only bent in one direction - and not to the side - like a "chain sword" (à la bicycle chain).
