I think it really depends on location and specialty. Because when I moved from NYC to the Philadelphia suburbs, I encountered the exact opposite. I work in OB/GYN as a PA. And when I applied to all of the Philadelphia hospitals, they only wanted NPs and midwives. None of the hospitals were interested in hiring PAs. I finally found a job and unfortunately it didn't work out. I was the first PA they ever hired on L&D. And even after I left, they still only hired NPs. Every job listing in OB/GYN I saw only said WHNP. And it definitely was a little upsetting that the docs only seemed interested in working with NPs. So I guess it comes down to location & specialty

I think a lot of WHNP have an extensive background in women’s health such as L&D, post-partum, in addition to advance practice. Those that I know, have had a long career in women’s health overall. This could be the reason. Hang in there.

Thank you so much for sharing this ! Are you still working in a ob/gyn office ? After this experience under your belt I’m wondering if it’s still challenging for you to secure a job in that field

I have worked in California and Texas. PA have a lot of job opportunities in California while NP thrives in Texas. NP and PA can work in the ER, Urgent care and stand alone clinics and make money $80.00 to $90.00 through Envision Physician services

NP have more opportunities then PA, physician assistant is a fairly a new career. It just came about during the 60s.They are more nurse practitionist than PA's by far.

Both professions np & pa both came out in the 60’s….

That is not true. PA almost never have a difficult time finding a job after school and rarely get offers below 6 figures. They can also work in any specialty without additional credentialing. They also have a better relationship with most medical doctors.

The PA profession was created to improve and expand access to healthcare. In the mid-1960s, physicians and educators recognized there was a shortage of primary care physicians. To help remedy this, Eugene A. Stead Jr., MD, of the Duke University Medical Center, put together the first class of PAs in 1965. He selected four Navy Hospital Corpsmen who had received considerable medical training during their military service. Stead based the curriculum of the PA program on his knowledge of the fast-track training of doctors during World War II. The first PA class graduated from the Duke University PA program on Oct. 6, 1967. Nurse practitioner training Throughout the country, a consensus formed among nursing leaders that nurses were experienced and knowledgeable about the health care needs of children and families. This led to an expansion of their roles to parallel the roles and responsibilities of a primary care physician. In 1965, one of these leaders, Loretta Ford, partnered with a physician, Henry Silver, to create the very first training program for Nurse Practitioners. Their program, offered at the University of Colorado, focused on family health, disease prevention, and the promotion of health
