I am physically disabled and just finished Medical Assistant school this year. It was an incredibly tough journey, but so rewarding! I am pre-med and plan to be a doctor one day. Every day, my own experiences as a patient inform how I care for my patients. Thank you for talking about such an important subject! 💕

Hi beautiful! I was paralyzed 6 years ago in an accident (T5 complete). I’m currently a bedside nurse on a high acuity transplant surgery floor and have been at my hospital for over a year now :) I did nursing school entirely from my chair!! If you have any questions, feel free to reach out and I can try to guide you as much as possible!

@@lindseyrunkel7652 hey! I’m 17 and have always had an infatuation with the medical field and planned to be an RN and to possible work with kids but I’m struggling with what to do now. How hard was it for you to go through schooling and getting hired while being paralyzed? I am a complete T11 and T12 para since 10/14/20! So it’s only been a few months!

This video really hit home for me as a nurse. I had my right knee scoped for a torn meniscus just weeks before I entered nursing school. I remember doing clinicals balanced on crutches. I alternated Tylenol and Ibuprofen every 4 hours and endured pain throughout my entire 18 month graduate entry program. When my ortho doc recommended bilateral knee replacement, the head of the nursing program told me I would have to drop out of nursing school. The disabilities office at my school was not much help. So I toughed it out until I graduated and went on to become a hospice nurse. Not having to stand on my feet for 12 hours enabled me to do my job driving around from nursing homes to private homes. Eventually I wasn't able to walk without limping and took almost two years off to have both knees replaced one at a time. Today I am relatively pain free but still have not regained 100% flexibility and bend in the right knee. Going up an down stairs is difficult, and my balance is poor as well. Still I have persevered to work in the profession I love. Andrea my heart goes out to you. Blessings on your journey!

I'm currently watching Grey's Anatomy for the first time with my family. For me as a lesbian myself, Arizona has always been my fav character since she first appeared in S5. We just watched the scenes were Arizona blames Callie, which Nurse Andrea mentions and my mom didn't understand Arizona and said she should stop raging because Callie saved her life. But I definitely share Andrea's opinion because these scenes were real and they felt that way, it's not always "oh well yeah I forgive you" in that sugarcoated world and they showed Arizona's real struggle. I loved to hear about Andrea's story, I have deep respect for nurses especially in this time and I'm so glad that she followed her dreams, she seems like such a nice person!! Edit: Jessica saying "the only way out is through" is something very important which we should keep in our minds. Sometimes we can only go through difficult times to experience good times afterwards. Thanks for this encouraging interview

Thank you so much for this. As a person with a disability and someone who is confined to a wheelchair, I also had difficulty securing a job. I wanted to become a teacher, but when I went in for interviews, I was rejected many times because I believe many people feared I just wasn’t able to do the work. However, I was able to land an amazing job at a great high school and let me tell you, people with disabilities are able to relate to others in a completely different way and to show compassion in a way that many people cannot. So thank you for this video ❤️

I was in the process of enrolling in nursing school when i got my diagnosis unfortunately 😢 so yeah thats where im at right now in life .I'm not as sick as i was when i first got cancer and im not giving up on my dream neither !! Nothing is impossible... the very word itself says I’m Possible !! The great thing about being a Nurse is there are so many directions you can go . I am so happy to see this video/ interview. Nursing of all career paths out there : SHOULD be the most accepting of disabilities. Disabilities should not limit Nurses . Accommodations of a particular disability should be made . Nurses are taught to be advocates of patients, yet sadly; often are not advocates of each other . Well done to you all !! Finally awareness is brought into the light , which will open the doors to education and ultimately change of the norms . RN 22 years
