17:30 Why is the answer "After running, Timothy got a massage"? The phrase "After running" doesn't include a noun. Wouldn't "Since Timothy went running he got a massage" be the best choice because the dependent clause "Since Timothy went running" is an incomplete thought, but contains both a noun and verb?
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 9 ай бұрын
You bring up a great point! Both options you mentioned are valid, but they slightly differ in terms of their structure and emphasis. In the original sentence "After running, Timothy got a massage," the phrase "After running" serves as an introductory adverbial clause. It gives context to the main clause ("Timothy got a massage"), indicating that the action of getting a massage happened after Timothy ran. In the alternative sentence "Since Timothy went running, he got a massage," the adverbial clause "Since Timothy went running" still provides the same context, but it's positioned differently. Instead of being placed at the beginning, it's placed before the main clause. This sentence is equally correct and conveys the same sequence of events. So, you're right that the revised sentence you provided is also a valid way to express the idea, and it does include both a noun and a verb in the adverbial clause. The original sentence, though, is still correct and follows a slightly different sentence structure. Both options effectively convey the relationship between running and receiving a massage.

@@NurseCheungI do have a question about option three. Isn’t there a comma missing after “Since Timothy went running, he got a massage.” I am still learning. I was taught that a comma goes after an introductory phrase/clause as regardless if it is a phrase or dependent clause. Thank you 🙏🏽 The first and second choices are exactly the same answer. They are simple sentences. “After running” is an adverbial phrase not an adverbial clause. An adverbial clause contains both a subject and a verb and can qualify as a dependent clause. However, if there isn’t a subject and a verb, it isn’t a clause, it’s a phrase. Choice 1 & 2 can be like same, “I went for a run because I felt stressed.” Or, “Because I felt stressed, I went for a run.” These two are the same, the only difference is I changed the order of the clauses. In the first sentence the DC is towards the end while the second sentence, the DC is toward the beginning.

So judgement ( which is what zi know it to be ) would be considered incorrect?
@NurseCheung
@NurseCheung 9 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right! The word "judgment" is sometimes spelled as "judgement" in British English. It's one of those interesting differences in spelling between American English and British English. Keep up the good work in paying attention to these details - it shows a thorough understanding of language variations!

I was born in the UK and recently moved to the states so even though "judgement" is correct for me I would still be wrong, I feel like that kind of question is a little unfair. Thank you for all the effort you put in for the videos!@@NurseCheung
