No, NO, No. new grads going into Med Surg is soo outdated. As a new grad I went into the OR and am never looking back. Nowadays a new grad can really have their pick. Psych, OR, ED, ICU the choice is really up to you, dont let ANYONE tell you, you have to start in Med Surg

Great insight Katherine! Our daughter is a CNA.. any opinion on their role in Med surge vs other hospital areas?
@Katherine_Ann
@Katherine_Ann 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Christine! Yeah, so being a CNA in med-surg is a great option! That helps on a resume when going to apply for nursing positions in the future if she goes on to become a RN and, it really shows her a wide variety of patients thus helping her determine if she wants to go into another specialty.

I work as a PCA in the float pool and I know med surge isn’t for me, but I get why they say to start there. I think I’m gonna go with my original plan and pursue the ICU or NICU. Great video!

M/S is a specialty for sure and honestly its good for new grads because then they learn how to take care of patients before going into a specific area.

Hi Snow Queen! Fun story for you, I was once floated to a med surg/ oncology unit and it maybe was one of the worst experiences I've ever had... one of the patients I had needed Chemo infusion and I never even saw a bag of it the day before going there... needless to say I didn't even give it lol and I found out I was not actually allowed too. Boy did I have a whole new respect for the ones who worked on that unit!

I've been a critical care nurse for 28 years now, after working as a nursing assistant on med / surg for two years. I have floated to med / surg units and responded to rapid responses there... the nurses on med surg are awesome and I think it is a great and rewarding area to gain experience as well as work for a whole career if you want to.

Hi Peter, I just watched your most recent video and I just subscribed to you. The comments were turned off so i wanted to reach out to you here. I was very moved by your video. I am a new nurse in the cath lab and I love what I do, but I can feel a call to hospice possibly down the road. I have a heart to serve families in this way and it's really great to get a sneak peak into your work. Thank you

I think medsurg and stepdown are the two best entry level nursing positions for new grads. Lots of hands on skills, prioritization, familiarity with medications and disease processes.

Hey! Thank you for your insights! From watching a few videos on med surg it seems like it's a speciality where you can see almost.. everything. Which seems like a great learning opportunity but I was wondering what your opinion would be on going straight into med- surg as a new graduate nurse (I graduated in April of last year) and this will be my first RN job now in March 2022 almost a year later. I feel as though what I have learned and my practical skills have sort of been forgotten and I wonder if this is really the best place to start, despite my keen interest in it. What do you think?
@Katherine_Ann

Hey, thank you for your comment. I do think med surg is a great starting point for any new grad. You may have the ability to float to other units to help them out as well!
