Vertical stone compositions are possibly the most technically demanding type of bonsai creation-but they are well within every practitioner’s grasp when provided with understanding of every step of the process. In this stream, Ryan uses nursery stock juniper whips to create an incredible composition with vertical stones created by Jan Culek.

First of all, I'm new to bonsai, and found your content early on. I really appreciate the in-depth knowledge you share. Your combination of an artistic view combined with foundational horticulture knowledge of all plants is so unique! I've always been hesitant to become a member (don't really know why), but after watching this, which is by far the best video on this subject FOR FREE, I will definitely joining and support all you do. Keep em coming!

I use those bits too for pots! ...avail at Home Depot, rated at 200 holes and 2 diff sizes iirc. Much better than those more common tube-looking ones with diamond flakes; those are only rated to 10-20 holes. The tube-ones are also difficult to get a hole centered and started.

I would imagine its sieved clay powder, maybe 10 to 20% of the mix, not a bonsai expert, used a 1:1:1 ratio of grit : clay powder : potting soil + water instead of cement to build a stone wall.

Muck is used in slab and stone plantings where stronger support is needed, such as vertical swells or edging. It’s a self-adhering clay, like mud, that solidifies some after drying. A good muck is permeable enough for water and roots to penetrate, but solid enough for firm support. There are many recipes, they all include some sphagnum moss, (so roots can breath and water can get through), some compost, or soil rich in organic matter, and some sort of clay or other substance that can hold it all together. So, as for "clay ingredient" - I've heard of people using clay sold on amazon for face masks and scrubs, in the cosmetic industry; I 've heard of acadama dust (that's probably easy to find in Japan and China, but not in US, acadama being at the price of gold). All 3 ingredients are mixed 1:1:1 in those recipes. But here are some more. Full disclosure - I tried NONE of these. Virginia Boka’s recipe, from Tropical Greensheets: Combine 1 box of cornstarch and 3 quarts of cold water. Cook this mixture over medium heat, stirring constantly until thick like glue. It can burn the bottom of the pan so be careful. Let it cool to room temperature. Mix together equal parts of soil, peat and chopped sphagnum moss and add this to the cooked starch a little at a time until it is very thick and sticky. Be sure to wear rubber gloves. After experimenting with this recipe, we have found that worm castings work well instead of soil and it seems to help the moss take root faster. From the Bonsai Society of Brevard: Mix one part Bentonite with 5 parts Black Kow [a popular brand of composted manure], and one part sphagnum moss cut into one inch lengths (be sure to add the moss before any water is added to the mixture). Add water. The resulting mixture is still sufficiently sticky, easy to handle, stays in place, is very easy to rewet if it dries out, and can be reshaped on the slab as long as it is moist. Wear gloves.

@@wildboystv3013 I would imagine they are poured into a mold which is either hand carved or more likely formed around natural pieces of lava he's found. That would explain why the protrusions are somewhat rounded off so that they could be extracted from the mold. but that's just a guess.
