He dislocated his shoulder.
He was a bodybuilder.
His muscles were huge.
It took five doctors multiple attempts to put his shoulder back into place.
They had to sedate him.
They had given pain medication.
Then, they recommend that he stay overnight so they could watch him.
Well, that's exactly what they did.
They watched him.
But when he made complaints to the nurse on duty about tingling and numbness in his fingers, she brushed it off.
A little while later, while making her rounds again, the patient told her about worsening complaints of tingling and numbness in his fingers, hand and now arm.
Again, she failed to recognize the severity of this neurological emergency and told the patient that his doctors would be in, in the morning on their regular rounds and he could tell them about his concerns.
By the time the team made morning rounds, they recognized this was significant.
He needed an emergency CAT scan.
The results showed a collection of fluid compressing the bundle of nerves that control his fingers, his hand and his arm.
The doctors told him he needed emergency surgery.
Despite their efforts to remove this buildup of fluid, they had lost their window of opportunity to prevent permanent nerve damage...all because a nurse in this hospital failed to recognize the significance of the patient's complaints.
All because she failed to notify the resident and tell anyone that this patient was having a neurological emergency.

So the physician is not to blame at all? Not even a little bit? It’s the nurses fault?

I guarantee you the nurse attempted to contact a physician and they didn’t respond. But that gets left out right? Because the nurse is always at fault. A med-surg nurse is supposed to be able to recognize that this is a nerve problem?

It is when she fails to recognize the signs and symptoms of neurological deficits. It is when she fails to alert the physician to a problem. That’s what happened here.
