MN RN here! Our union hospital provides us with pension, NG pay 45.18/hr (up to $100.11/hr working unscheduled wknds), getting a $5 increase next year, 401K matching , 5 12s biweekly. Nursing ratios are set. ICU 1:2, med/surg 1:4 and nights 1:6. Best thing is LCOL. A nurse on my unit made 300K last year as casual PT. I LOVE UNIONS! And I love MN!

@janthonymorris4394 Жыл бұрын
@@emeksb4823MN has great outdoor activities, wilderness parks, a lot of lakes and boating activities. The food scene is very diverse. Progressive tax systems help with community needs. They recently produced their own stimulus checks for residents as we have a 17.5billion with a B surplus for our state fiscal budget next year. Schools are great. Great subsidies for healthcare(Medicaid) where a lot is covered. Great labor unions. No tax on groceries/clothes. No toll tax. Theater/entertainment options/etc are in abundance. I know we just got bad coverage regarding George Floyd police brutality, but the state has been very responsive to the it’s culture deficits and or recovery. Abortion/LGBTQIA rights among others are protected. There are ton more stuff I like and also dislike :)

Wow it’s ironic how you guys posted about this topic when I need it. I switched recently from part time ICU to per diem float pool at KP, but unfortunately I recently got into a car accident and the PI and doctor are recommending light duty until mid December. I was going to message my manager to see what he could do for me. Short term goal was to stay PD so I can pay off the rest of my student loans, long term goal is to switch back to PT for benefits.
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's a tough decision because of the benefits you lose out on, but the pay is so much higher. Getting injured and having to go on disability is one of the worst-case scenarios for a per diem nurse who doesn't have a partner to piggyback health insurance from.
@Manifestation_Savant Жыл бұрын
Just my 2 cents. I have a full-time job and a per diem second job. The advantage of working per diem as a second job is flexibility over overtime. Of course, the pay varies but my per diem rate almost as much as my overtime rate.

this northern california pay is ridiculous. I wish NY was close to that but NY pay is garbage for a high cost of living area. Would love to move out there but family is out here and we get alot of support from them (we have a young daughter). You guys make me want to make the move. but you guys coming here makes me want to stay lol. Family is very important in our life. Awesome video and thank you for the great content you put together.
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
We have two friends who moved out here from NYC before they had their first child. They bought a home, made great money, and sold it one year after their son was born. They moved back to NY because they wanted to be closer to family. They feel like they made the right decision, but they do miss the fact that they had the best working conditions they've ever had while they were here in California. They also miss being able to travel so much because they didn't have to work as hard as they do in NY to make a decent living. But I totally get where you are coming from, and when you have a child and you have a family around to help you support them, it really does play a bigger role in your decision to move. At the end of the day, we came here to do what we wanted to do-make money, pay off our debts, invest, and move back home. So, that's our plan in 2 years-to move back home.

I Have been consistently watching your videos/listening to the podcast and find them very insightful 😊. Matter of fact my friend and I recently moved to California from Florida. Currently working full time in sacramento and hoping to Land a per diem position at KP in Sacramento south or Roseville but it’s been extremely competitive😢. Submitted our applications with no feedbacks yet. Apparently they prioritize their internal Pools for PD. Any advice?
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
Yes, your best bet would be to apply for any and every external position you see on their careers page, even if it's not a per diem position. Once you're in the system, you'll have access to their internal posting where they'll have a lot more per diem positions listed.
@NURSESTEPHANIE09 Жыл бұрын
As a per diem, you should look into getting disability insurance and they can cover you when you may get into an accident. A lot of self employed people have to find creative ways to get benefits in some way. I am also looking to get life term insurance. Does your employer give you one?

Do per Diem nurses get pension in Southern California Kaisers also?
@LoriTpage Жыл бұрын
I’m per diem now and it’s been recently not as favorable. Shifts are few and far between. No pre-confirmation anymore. And of course seniority takes a precedence
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
The reason for this is that our wages have increased drastically for all employees in unions who fought long and hard for those increases. Increased wages to this extent mean fewer profits for the institutions, so they choose to cut costs by limiting over time or by first asking regular staff to pick up shifts that don't put them at an overtime rate before asking per diem employees to come in.

Are you frequently able to pre schedule a double or is it mostly last minute? Speaking from the perspective of someone who has low seniority in the system
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
When they're in desperate need, staffing may call you a few weeks in advance to ask if you want to work a double, but this is not common, and in most cases, it'll be last-minute decisions.
@oliverlikescheetos Жыл бұрын
I work at multiple Kaiser facilities in the Bay Area, and at least for those 3-4 hospitals, they do not pre-confirm doubles. My friends at other hospitals also say they no longer preconfirm doubles in icu/medsurg/tele. Not sure about ED.. It was only during Covid times where they confirmed us weeks in advance. Now, you have to respond to the text message blasts the day of the shift for the possibility of overtime by being put on a queue.
@NursesToRiches Жыл бұрын
@oliverlikescheetos yeah it's really going to depend on the location and the department. Monica works tele in South Sacramento and they prebook her for doubles often.

@esperanzaserrano86085 ай бұрын
I worked in psych as well! Nurses would float to med surg but not to the specialties. They would only get assignments based on what training they have completed. Or they would task, they could function as a tech, or they would sit.

About $52 an hour at 40 hours a week comes out to around $100k over the course of a year. If you can find a contract or per diem that offers close to ~$100/hr, you’ll be hitting that in 20 hours a week. But realistically maybe 25-30 hours a week
