The moment the nurse walked in and noticed the HOB was flat and did not raise it was the first mistake. Lying flat increases the patient's risk of aspirating stomach contents. Patients with an NG tube are at risk for aspiration. The head of bed should ALWAYS be raised 30 degrees or higher. Other then that great video!

Lol when your pt has 20+ meds to crush and given via feeding tube, you ain't got time to crush and administer individually. One thing I hated about nursing school is the false perception that students get thinking the real world is picture perfect nursing

But its the law to crush each med individually. Its about time management and organization. It can be done. Trust me....it CAN and HAS to be done correctly.

That's cute that you can be so naïve about that, Nelson. These meds end up in the same place interacting anyway. When you work in an ICU environment and have 3 patients with high acuities, trust me. You milk all the time you can get. You just have to be wary about what meds you can give crushed or not. One example being the enteric coated or KCl tablets. But yeah. Most of us don't have the luxury to time manage and overload our patients with that much volume of bolus. Some don't tolerate it very well. And just because it's a law or policy doesn't make it true or truly safe. Evidence-based practices change often. What was ok today may not be tomorrow and vice-versa. Titrating drips via a protocol doesn't mean it'll always work because of specific individual quirks. So, chill out.

I had an NG tube once in the ICU. Now I see why patients would fight when getting this done. It was miserable and I wasn’t given anything to drink to help get it down as I was NPO. I don’t remember the insertion very much but having it in was awful and painful. Nurse threatened yo put me in restraints because every time they moved me it made the tube move which was very sore in my throat and I kept telling them I was holding it in place but I was told I had periods of not being lucid due to very high fever (was admitted with over 105 degree fever and remember nothing of the ambulance or ER or even going to the cat scan. I remember the 3 tries at a lumbar puncture among a ton of other procedures in 1 day (I think it was 1 day but I swear this was being done at night but my husband was in the waiting room and never stayed at night so I have no idea as the ICU had no windows). If a patient reaches up just check to see if they are holding it in place because every time I was moved or rolled or anything it hurt. I kept asking for popsicles to dull the pain as I was on IV Fentanyl apparently

They also wanted to put in a dobhoff and I just couldn’t do it. That was about a month later while I was still in the hospital. I was septic and ended up in renal failure. Lost 40 pounds in a month due to being on 6 different IV antibiotics and antivirals

Hi what if the patient is on water restrictions. In that case we can't flush with so much of water. What should we do then? Can we mix medicine in feed? We have to crush Ecosprine which is a slow acting drug as no other option available. What to do in that case? Thanks in advance
