Nicely done. It is nice to see an important aspect, usually ignored, of archery brought up. In 1954 I was 5 years old and fell in love with REAL archery offered as a class in a day camp. Day 1 was strictly the bow. We had decent finger tabs, a set of military strict instructors, and a culling of idiots. Never-ever draw then release the string in any manner without an arrow. The first batch of clowns were ejected from the class. That was fine since these were the usual jokers and bullies. When we found and practiced drawing comfortably with 10-12 lb bows, our tabs were marked then given to us for keeps. Over the years I've settled on my favorite. The Saunders Pak-Tab is inexpensive but can be modified to suit most archers... if one gets the right size. A regional-national champion "bare-bow-fingers" shooter with compound bows mentored me when I came back into archery after a 39 year hiatus. The plastic pad portion contacting the string serving is replace by a cut-to-fit piece of stiff felt. I rub in a bit of silicon. The finger hole on the back of these tabs fits my hand perfectly. I'm very happy with it for both my Yank longbow...with slight sneaky "micro-recurved" tips and my new Samick Mind-50. Well, I'm a sucker-infoholic for history so I got "The Way of Archery" by Tian & Ma. I have heard of the Cavalier being used by local FITA archers. It is tempting to try it. Sorry about the long-windedness... Again, thanks a bunch for your helpful vids.

Loctite 242 (blue) on the threads would prevent screw or nut loss. Or some nail polish on the surface of the nut or screw head.

In aerospace industry they squeeze the nut to an extend to prevent it coming loose from vibration. So if you could deform the nut (a bit) and put it back on the bolt. I guess it will stay on there forever.

Make sure that the back of your hand is flat -- no knuckles should be showing. That is the only part of the hand that should be tense. Bending the wrist outwards can help get the right tension. Practise it by lifting shopping bags (or any bags).

He is absolutely correct, I went to a sight of a popular Survival bow company and just happen to speak to the owner(people may be lined up to buy bows but not necessarily survival ones) but these type bows are more intuitive the kind you'd think would be shot with your fingers and they are, yet when I started talking about broad heads and other "cool" equipment he said hey hold on the first thing you need is a Tab and a forearm protector he said the same exact thing you can hurt your fingers cause nerve damage (and Coming from a person who has extremely severe neuropathy you do not want that- At All !), oh and he also said getting slapped with the string without a guard hurts like hell ! So just listen to this guy, take care!

As a beginner archer a can recommend that you use the same tab every time in the beginning, especially if you are shooting at short distances and holding the string under the arrow. Borrowing from your club can work if you can get the same tab every time, which may not be the case depending on the practises on your club. Having your own tab will help you to be more consistent in were you hold the string.

Have been slinging arrows for only 3 months... Here's my 2 pence worth. The correct arrows and the right finger tab (just switched to one with a palm plate that fits, and it's improved my consistency by 50%) make an incredible difference. Do I still hit the blue from time to time, sure. But when I get all of the other parts of the shot process correct, the right tools for the job make sure I'm in the gold or thereabouts :-)

Hey NUSensei, I really enjoy your videos. I recently came back to archery after more than 15 years. Shooting the old compound I used as a kid wasn't working so well as the draw was too short and the weight was much too light. So I bought a 45lb recurve. They sold me a surprisingly nice tab with the bow, I think it's a Bateman with finger spacer and hair face. I've been shooting for a month now at least 20 minutes per day and it still looks like new. But I could not get a really consistent shot and felt that my release was lacking control. I saw this video and it gave me some great direction in shopping for a tab. I purchased the AAE Elite with a hair face, and using it for the first time today I noticed significant improvement in release control. I've been shooting at 20 - 30 yards for the last two weeks and at 30 I could get a full quiver into the target but there was no semblance of accuracy. This AAE just feels so smooth on the release and protects my fingers so well I am much more comfortable holding and aiming my shot. I've taken my scattered, all over the target shooting, to a relatively small 15" group! That is amazing to me. I will probably keep shooting instinctive for 3 months or so before moving on to using a sight. Initially my lack of grouping was making me think I would need to make the investment sooner rather than later, but now I think I will be quite comfortable for a while without one. Thanks!

The band for the KSL tab between the first and second finger goes underneath the spacer. There is a slot under the spacer for it though you will need to unscrew the spacer first

Something to think about with tabs is how easy it is to do other things without having to take off the tab. When i am on the line and just finished a set i can just let my tab hand and pull arrows easily. When i want to load one my tab will just hang off my finger and allow me to load a arrow without the tab in the way of my fingers. That isnt something most people think about when getting a new tab.

For the more adventurous, you can get leather, and try your hand at making your own. A vegetable tanned single shoulder will run you about 50USD, and give you enough material to make ~20 tabs.

Interesting, I had my first 'taster' session at a local archery range last weekend, while they provided me with an arm guard at no point did they mention anything about finger tab's, I wish they had as only after an hour I had a big sore blister on my middle finger and it was getting very painful toward the end of the session. I've bought a tab since and will definitely be using it for practice and at the coming beginner lessons in September :)

I tried out archery with my neighbour's 20lbs bow without protection, thinking my skin (which is harder than many people, after years of working with hand tools) can take on such light bow. And after like 30 shots I had to stop because my fingers hurt so bad, and then they went on to feel numb for nearly a week. I recently made one from leather I cut from an old boot (the rest of it became my armguard), and it already feel so much better. Use protections, everyone!

GET A THICK TAB before you hurt yourself. My middle finger went numb! My class got us the basic "fur lined" tabs, and they worked great for a couple months of twice-a-week shooting, until I tried shooting for an hour a day three days in a row. My fingers felt fine, and then BAM, middle finger just went out. A week of no shooting and it's almost better, but still feels funny.

It's a matter of preference. Traditional archers and hunters prefer gloves, which are handy because you've always got it on. Target shooters universally use tabs. Their design typically offers better protection and a smoother surface, lessening the chances of a fouled shot.

the string lined against the plate.. is that a thing? or is there a difference? i find myself typically hooking at the tip of my fingers or at the first knuckle.. but with fingertabs is thats why the plate is there? should i just line it with the plate? more reference points for a consistence shot the better right? but doesnt that mean you should always shoot with a deep hook? or maybe im just over thinking it. doesnt matter as long as you got everything in place.

I've covered them in my "No-Glove" review. The problem is that they actually do get in the way. The one-size-fits-all concept doesn't allow for a deep hook and it is more difficult to achieve a clean release. Additionally, they slow the string because of the added weight. They're useful for high-traffic clubs and ranges with lots of beginners, but most clubs will introduce beginners to finger tabs right away.

Hi NUSensei, great work on your videos! Thank you! I bought the AAE gold KSL tab, to replace my soma bjd, and now all my shots are higher than they were with the soma tab. Do you think it is related to the weight of the tab pulling my hand down? It doesn't seem natural to shoot with it, what else could be wrong? do you have any suggestions? Also the leather on the tab is very stiff, how can I soften it a bit so I can "feel" the string as I did on the previous worn tab? Thank you for your time!
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 10 жыл бұрын
The leather will soften over time. As you use it more, it will naturally curl the way your fingers go over the string, to the point where it'll become too soft. If your arrows are going higher, it's likely that you're anchoring lower than you normally do, possibly because you're not used to the new tab yet. Make sure you use a consistent anchor point.

NUSensei I know it will soften with use ( that's why I replaced the soma, it was too soft ) I heard if you put alcohol it can soften faster, that way you dont have to shoot lots of arrows in order to be at the right sensivity. Maybe I got used to a very very worn tab, and I think I need to feel the string more. Anyway I'll remove the top shelf to see if I can lower the shot, Since I'm not used to shoot without a shelf, where should my thumb be? curled and almost touching the pinky? Thanks!
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 10 жыл бұрын
Some people touch thumb to pinky, but it's not a common method for target shooters and more common for traditional speed-shooters. The thumb should be tucked in tightly under the jaw.

I got a really shit one with my bow package, I don't even know how to put it on actually. I end up just sitting it in my palm. Figure I'll buy a release aid, what's your opinion on release aids? I feel like there would be less chance my fingers are going to move the string when I'm trying to release? Also I find my arm guard doesn't cover enough of my arm, I seem to get hit on my upper arm behind the elbow, in-between my bicep/elbow as opposed to in-front of my elbow on the forearm. Do you have any suggestions for good arm guards that cover more than just the forearm? FYI, new to archery, no idea what I'm doing just learning as I go. Already found out my compound bow will easily shoot right through the walls in my house lol, in one side out the other.
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 9 жыл бұрын
If you're shooting a compound bow, a release aid is the norm. Release aids do away with the inconsistencies of a finger release, and having that consistency is kind of the point of a compound bow. If you're hitting your upper arm, your form needs work. Make sure your shoulders are relaxed and even, and your elbow is rotated outwards to give the string clearance. People often hit themselves leaning backwards and hyperextending their elbows. You need to address this rather than getting bigger arm guards.

Thanks mate, I found I had my arm too straight, I didn't know I was supposed to be bending it slightly. Started consistently hitting 30cm x 30cm target from 20 meters away :P Can't wait to try more now. I think I'm instantly hooked, thanks to your guidance :)

That first tab is trying so hard to be a Black Widow it’s hilarious. The best part is the Widow is the same price but so much better, both build quality and fit. Though seeing how those mediums fit you tells me I have MASSIVE hands. I got a large black widow and it’s still a half inch short of my fingertips. I’m only Five Eight. Am I some kind of freak?

what is the advantage of using a fingertab instead of a glove?
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 8 жыл бұрын
Finger tabs usually provide more protection by being thicker, can offer a smoother surface to release from, and is more convenient on the range because it can be easily removed.

I'm a beginner/intermediate archer, but I have a problem with my fingertab when using it I struggle reaching a proper anchor position. Would you happen to have any advice?
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 10 жыл бұрын
Remember to keep your head still and draw to the anchor rather than moving into. Keep the anchor "tight" - there should be firm contact between the finger and the jaw (or cheek). The hook and anchor should feel "strong".

May I just ask, why don't Olympians use gloves? I prefer gloves when I'm shooting traditional, but I use my tab when I'm at the range, but I would much rather use a glove.

However, my SF finger tab leather either increased it's length or tear at the part where I have rest my string when I pull my bow. Is it common?
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 10 жыл бұрын
It can happen, especially with leather, but tends to happen more with cheap tabs and higher draw weights. It may also happen more often if you're using an oversized tab, which can be aggravated with an incorrect hook.

It's for a 3 fingers below the arrow grip. It's preferable IMO if that's the grip you use.

If you get string slaps then you aren't shooting the bow correctly. Your arm should never be in the way of the string.

While that's true, that's pretty useless info for a beginner shooter. Nu Sensei talks about this in another video. I'm just starting out, and I've already been to the range with 4 or 5 different friends of mine. While most of them either provided me arm guards or cautioned me to wear sleeves, I have a couple cowboy friends who insist "the only way to learn is through pain", as if wearing an arm guard would make me laugh and shrug off every bad shot I make. I'm currently learning my form, and I genuinely want to get it right. I'm putting a lot of concentration into getting it right, and making it so that string slaps never happen. But in the meantime, I'm wearing an arm guard. It's not like the pain will magically help me identify what I'm doing wrong with my shot. It's far MORE likely to distract me from my form due to fear of getting hit.

What do you think about fingertabs without "stiff Plates" (I have no idea how to say that better I'm not a native speaker). I use a Leather Tab made by elToro, and it feels more natural to me than the ones tht have metal/plastic backplates. P.S. This is what I mean: www.rielex.at/getImage.aspx?name=6101ebfe-85ce-47a0-9b37-218417ce6225elTORO_Ledertab_Kalbshaar.jpg&hoehe=700

The simplest ones are often the best ones. Many archers have a preference for a tab that does not force their hand to conform to a particular shape, as it can add unnecessary tension in the wrong places.

Hi NuSensei, when im using fingertabs, it always touch the arrow when release and make arrow vibrate horizontally (im 1 finger above and 2 finger under style, using AAE Cavalier Super Leather Elite tab), is it my release wrong or i need a larger fingertab? Im considering change to a glove to avoid this...
@NUSensei
@NUSensei 8 жыл бұрын
Gloves are often more difficult to prevent from pinching because they are generally more padded (depending on the fit). You should look at where on the fingers the string is placed, spread your fingers out more, or examine if your finger placement twists the string as you anchor. If your bow is too short, arrow pinch is also inevitable.

Thank you for your response! im using 62'' take down while my draw length is approx 27.4'', i guess i should trim down my finger tab a little and see if this helps
