Dear Matonizz, Why do you sometimes play in treble clef and other times play in bass clef? -A Confused 7th grade Euphonium player
@rubenapol9503
@rubenapol9503 4 жыл бұрын
Often it's just a matter of how it's notated in the score. Sometimes your part is in treble clef, sometimes in bass clef. It can even happen that you have to play in tenor clef. It's the same with tunings, sometimes you play in concert pitch and other times you play in Bb. Therefore it's very useful to just learn to read in all three clefs and in both tunings, so you never get a part you can't read. It may cost some time, but if you give it 6 to 12 months you should be rather fluent in all three clefs. Just find the discipline to keep practicing and don't forget to just have fun with it!

Arthur in the brass band world treble clef is used so one can move from instrument to instrument , say from cornet to euphonium excepting tubas and bass trombone who read bass clef

Thanks for replying Peter! In my original comment I was really talking about the way the first baritone was shuffling/dancing in his seat around the 0.44 mark. I am aware that many brass players are capable of swapping between instruments. I generally play in orchestral music so reading treble for trumpet and bass for trombone tuba ect. I must admit I have very little knowledge of the brass band world however I thought that usually tuba read the "bass brass part" that was usually written in treble? Also was not aware of bass trombones being used in brass bands! Could you please give a little insight?
@mazadan

Arthur I play in a brass band. Bass trombone, I read bass clef and also tenor clef. I also play tenor slide and valve trombone so have three. Though unusually for a brass player I only read bass and tenor clef and not treble

You have to highlight your compadre on the euph. He is first class and effortlessly floats over his music. Who is he? What's his background? When does he play the solos. Seems there isn't anything he can't handle. Can't think of a band that wouldn't love to hand a musician of his caliber.

If you ever want to turn professional I would say it's mandatory. Bass clef is definitely the one you'll see most often but you need to know treble and tenor clef as a euphonium player to fully cover repertoire. Hope this helps friend, best, M

You just learn how to switch in your head. I'm a senior in high school now, and I've played Euphonium since 7th grade. I play bass clef, but my freshman year of high school, I was introduced to treble clef players (2 every year, thus far). Since I ended up being one of the better brass players in my band, I had to learn treble clef to help out. Note-wise is the easiest way to start out. All notes go up a whole step. Bass F becomes treble G, bass Bb becomes treble C, and so on. From there, you'll have to learn how to read the music. Typically, I don't actually read it as the note pitch in treble clef, but I've memorized the area of the staff and transpose it. It also helps if you read trumpet music, as you'll be forced to figure out how treble clef works in that sense, and listening to the octave pitch may be a lot better. I know that's a lot to read, but I hope that helps somewhat!
