Makes a lot of sense how George developed the accents. Actually quite a fascinating and in depth process. Another reminder not to be too quick to judge and assume someone has bad motives in how they create characters, accents or story points. I wonder if his process was similar with Watto, 'cause I know that's another character George got accused of racism on. Would be pretty cool to have a chat with Andy Secombe.
@TheGeeknd2 жыл бұрын
Hey Brian! Yeah George certainly wasn’t lazy with it, some of the attacks on the other hand likely were. Would love to chat with Andy Secombe.

It sounds like you were too quick to judge; only morons that this character was a racist 'caricature,' because they are so ignorantly that they think a 'foreign sounding accent must be racist caricature of the exact race they think, despite knowing nothing of the made up accent or the real accent they supposedly think it is No shit it was the same for Watto; you are acting in bad faith by siding with the racists by suggesting some truth could be in the claims of racists claiming Watto is racist

It really annoys me when I see the news/entertainment media, who called Ahmed Best "the next Stepin Fetchit" in their "think pieces", now claiming that it was "toxic fans" that drove him to consider suicide, without acknowledging their role. (I obviously don't know for sure, but I suspect he was more hurt by things like the "Stepin Fetchit" comparisons and MadTV's skit depicting George Lucas's new character, "Aunt Jar-Jar-mima", than he was by some guy named "YodaFan69" on some random message board saying that Jar Jar is annoying.)

I wish I could take credit for this, but here's an interpretation posted by Ernest Rister on a forum I read that I quite liked: "The Nemoidians weren't Asians or speaking with Asian accents. A running theme of The Phantom Menace was symbiotic relationships, even lifeforms. Cultures and communities living to each other's benefit. Midichlorians? Healthy relationship. Naboo and Gungans? Eventual beneficial relationship. Watto? Selfish, with Lucas inspired by mosquitos for his design, a blood-sucker. Nemoidians? They take for their own benefit. Selfish. Blood-suckers. Vampires. George Lucas said the Nemodians should speak like 'Dracula." You know, the whole 'I vant to saack yore bloouhd' thing. They even have pointy little teeth, almost like fangs. Not Asians. Vampires."
@sumrandumguy7177 Жыл бұрын
Even if it is a Thai accent, who cares? First of all, not all Neimodians are “bad”, it’s only the trade federation. Number two, the vast majority of villains in Star Wars have English accents. What makes non-English immune from being portrayed a villain? Bullshit claim. And btw, the accent is based on different ethnicities in other dubs.

Everyone forgets the Neimoidians were exploited victims of Sidious, and Gunray himself was killed by Vader. Neimoidians need hugs.

I think the accents at most were sussy with the accents. Watto primarily thought just because of his greed and big nose leading others to see antisemitism. Which to be fair is a valid thing to worry about.

If I had the choice to be a background character in the new Star Wars live action shows, it would be a Nemoidian.
@pattyotk2 жыл бұрын
Intent is only one part of the equation, impact and interpretation is just as important. At the end of the day the voice still sounds like an asian caricature. I would love to laugh it off as a product of its time but people are still using that accent for neimoidians in star wars media to this day (audiobook for Brotherhood by Mike Chen). And the fact that Silas is still defending it as an "artistic choice" instead of recognizing the mistake is pretty problematic. Voldemort has no nose and you didnt see Ralph Fiennes imitating a Thai accent
@e.gadd.16 ай бұрын
No character is allowed to be silly now in woke cinema today except (we hope) insulting caricatures of our behated nondescript 'white people' right. Everyone else must be depicted as noble, dignified and cool. Yawn. Anyway. You can't come up with an accent or persona without someone identifying with it as like something in their own life. But of course, 'identifying with' a character is what makes you care, and what makes a good movie. If there was no identification, people would say the movie sucked, so

We dressed them up in chinese inspired clothes, gave them eyes that looked like racist asian caricatures and then gave them asian accents and then made them greedy cowards, another racist asian caricature. But he wants us to believe it was totally not racist? And that his defense is "as an artist"? What a joke.
