For me, the very best AR optics are hands down, the Trijicon ACOGs in the 4x32 configs. They're unbelievably simple, light weight, almost indestructible and enjoy fantastic light transmission. I'm not in to variable 1-4x. Just seems too complicated and long when you could simplify it with an ACOG. But thats just my opinion. I basically like to stick with what the military uses but I'm not into red dot sights, so the most obvious option for me are the ACOGs.
@TheDoug76
@TheDoug76 11 жыл бұрын
I went through the gamut of scopes and red dots. My main POU is hunting with my AR, primarily wild hogs, and practically all shots are within 100yds. But it's often getting dim when they come out, so a scope works best. But I like the FOV provided by a red dot. So I split the difference, and went with a fixed power, low power scope. I chose the Nikon P 223 3x32, built for the AR carbine. I'm very happy with it. It does all I need, and still gives me beyond 100yd capability.

alpha numeric Oh yeah....I'll see if I can get that loaded into a separate vid for ease of reference. An interesting AR build guide would be kinda cool to show all the ones we've run around here. Generally, 18" barrels and midlength gas systems seem to take it. -Doodle

757optim It is, and it is a shame. I'd like to have the extra two inches, but how much of a difference does it make in accuracy, muzzle velocity and weight? I run a Smith, with a stock 16in floated barrel and at 100 yards and less, I can draw pictures on paper. I've never stretched it out though. If I can find that Pony Express maybe I'll see what 16 inches and I are capable of.

nutnfancy Nutn, what eye relief is in your opinion the ideal eye relief for a midrange rifle set up 0-300yrds? Ive been looking at the Vortex 1.75-5x32 diamondback. Its 3.5-3.7" eye relieve and 12.8ozs. Also been looking at the vortex strike eagle 1-6x24x. 17.6ozs with lighted reticle the is also etched. Good option you think? thank you also what one piece mounts do you recommend ? thanks again

Hey Nutn, this is one of the best review vids you've ever done. Like many shooters, I recognize the importance of good optics, but, like many shooters, optics don't turn my crank like the gun does. Understanding your POU, and benefitting from your variety and depth of experience in the kinds of shooting I do, it allows me to select an optic with much greater confidence. Thanks Bro!

I actually bought the LWRC M6A2 in black because of your review on it and how much you praised it. It also came with the single piece bolt carrier and after a long time on lay away I finally got an ACOG (Ta31F-RMR) on top. The 4x32 ACOG , with the ability to shoot with both eyes open (BAC), gives the perfect balance between CQB and mid range shooting. Beyond that it has the RMR for quick acquisition at close range. Most incredible rifle setup I have ever put my hands on. I now understand why they both cost so much. Thanks for the reviews, they have helped me to get the correct equipment without spending too much on equipment just to find out it is not right for me.

I've been having a Leupold Mark AR on my AR-15. 3 x 9 with the dials "calibrated" for 55 grain .223 for $400. After shooting through that leupold, I don't think I will go to other brands when it comes to actual scopes. The clarity was out of this world. I see why my dad always had a leupold on his deer rifle. They are just so CLEAR.

Nut'n, that was among the best and most useful optics reviews on KZbin for the AR shooting masses I have seen. The Firefield 1-6x24 riflescope for $160 is all your need. Even comes with scope mounts for a picatinni rail. 1 power gives you a red dot capability allowing you to keep both eyes open as you shoot short range targets but also allows you to zoom in targets up to 200-300-400-600 yards away. Even has with Milldots on the crosshairs and illuminates either Red or Green. Great for AR's and AK-47's.

I believe you have a lot of valuable information to share. However, you have LOST me. I am tired of the chronic seemingly endless introductions about the "NutNFancy Project" this video alone could have been cut by about 8 minutes if you didn't go on and on and on about your precious project. I think you probably should. Your comment shows that you have no idea what goes on in this channel. Nutn is far more in depth than any other gear reviewer out there. He takes his time and is extremely thorough with his research and reviews. If you want a 5 minute video from some wanna be tactical junkie that reviewed something for 20 mins; go for it. But just know when you watch one of these videos you are getting far better research and information than any other channel out there. Next time instead of leaving a nasty comment, just search on, and leave us without the negativity. Thanks

For the medium range category of scopes I've been pretty impressed with the Nikon fixed 3X P-223. I found one at a pawnshop for $90, and I've been liking it a lot. Its simple and it works. It seems to offer excellent optical clarity, a BDC reticle, and good eye relief. I like to think of it as my poor man's ACOG.

I just shot my 16 inch barrel AR15 at 300 yards the other day for the first time. I only have an eotech on it and was more than pleasantly surprised with my grouping! Don't expect as tight of groups as you will get with a scope, but you can shoot out to 300 easily. Plus with a nice sturdy red dot you can drop the rifle on it and not have to worry about losing zero.

I have to thank you again Nutnfancy, you raved so much about your 2x7 scope I gave it a try on my last 3-gun build. I was using 1x4 and that works just fine out to 100yrds but for those 200yrd stop plates the 7x is perfect. I went with Burris and love their ballistic plex, much less busy than others and works at least out to 400yrds. Never have had the time to learn and practice with mil-dots so the Burris method is perfect for targets at known distances. And not having to play with turrets, + +

That depends upon your operational profile (or POU as Nutn likes to call it). I run an Aimpoint T-1 with a quick twist off X3 on the back of my PWS Mk112 as it is nice for more detailed work out to 500m (we are required to score hits at 500m with no magnification anyway) while being a quick transition to CQB as well as giving faster access to my BUIS should the optic fail.

Thank you! As always, a LOT of info packed into this video! Rifle optics are something that we obviously can spend about as much as we're able and this helps me understand SOME of the reasons why prices vary so widely. I appreciate your work, Nutn!

Hey Nutn, long time subscriber and HUGE supporter of TNP here - just wanted to say that i think you should continue to make completely thorough videos , description and all, like you have been doing for years. In a few vids lately you have made mention to only doing certain things if you get a certain number of views. I have been here since 15 thousand subs. Keep doing what has made you so successful! god bless bro

THANKS NUTN!!! These are my favorite kind of videos! Always looking forward to watching your tabletops! Best on the net in my opinion. Love them all, knife, gear, guns and accessories. I appreciate all you do and keep up the great work. Although my personal philosophies differ from yours when it comes to scopes I still value your input and take all those things into consideration when I look for ways to improve upon my systems.

For getting trigger time, the cheaper the better for me! I'm going to be cleaning after the range anyway, so no worries if its dirty. Just bear in mind that sights need to be adjusted for the load in the mag when its time to shoot. Goes for long guns, too.

Instead of the 2.5-10 Nightforce, take a look at the new Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32 if you're on a budget. It can be had for 600-700 bucks, is illuminated, 30mm tube, parallax adj. has zero stops, and weighs 18 oz.

@ronnl001 11 жыл бұрын
I think this is very informative and gives a lot of information for shooters on a budget. One small critique is that the Nightforce is criticized for having "critical eye relief" while other cheaper scopes are praised for a range of eye relief. What is completely missed here is that the variable eye relief listed means that the eye relief shifts on these cheap scopes based on your power setting. The Nightforce remains static, and the eye relief is actually better on it than the others. Shoot it.

I bought a Vortex Crossfire 2 4-12 on my AR for shooting out to 400 and it is perfect. I think they can be picked up for $180ish without rings. 4x works for sub 100 yards, 12x with BDC reticule makes it so easy for longer range shots.

I think the best all around optic for a non "precision" AR is something in the 1-4x or 1-6x family. I have used Leupold and Vortex 1-4x's and a Weaver Tactical 1-5x to shoot out to 600 yards. All of them were great for a close to mid range type AR, but on my SPR, I chose a Weaver Tactical 2-10x for more precision at the mid to longer range shots. The Weaver Tactical series is the very best you can get for under a grand with the Vortex PST series coming in a very close second.

I'm a private military contractor and for a .223, I would not use magnification over 10x. I actually shoot 6x at 300m. Whats important is being able to track your target at that range. A higher power scope is impractical. You need that field of view especially tracking targets moving at higher speeds. 6x is sufficient using tracking or ambushing technique at even 300 meters. For home defense...I don't bother using optics...Iron sights is the choice of most operators at close range.

in the USMC we were required to hit a Echo target at 500m Iron sights. Not saying that optics are not necessary, I have a 3-9 power illumminated scope on mine on a QD that works fantastic, and I use the USMC back up irons with range adjust made by ma-tech. Currently the scope is in the case and a reflex sight is on the rail. The nice thing about that is if the reflex dies the flip up irons allow you to look through the glass with not problems.

Just thought I would point out that with an AR15 shooting 55gr fmj ammo you don't need a whole lot of elevation adjustment. Do the math and at 59F at sea level a 55gr round going 2800fps goes subsonic at 650 yards with ~24.6MOA drop. So 50 MOA of adjustment out of a 1" tube will fine. Also a 30mm tube will not let in more light, that's the objective's job, 30mm just gives you more adjustment. Hope this info helps and thanks for all your hard work in the project.

I love my Bushnell elite tactical 1-6.5x in FFP. It is a red dot for CQB but you get a ballistic reticle when crank it up. Best of both worlds in my opinion. It is in the high range but it has great glass.

Hi-Lux Leatherwood CMR 1x4 variable, etched reticle, illuminated 1MOA dot and 65MOA semi-circle ring. quicker than irons at 5 yards and 1x magnification. more accurate than irons anywhere between 50 and 500 yards with 4x. might just be the ultimate AR scope for engagements between 5m and 250m (which is the 'sweet spot' range for a 'assault style rifle').

But, Nutnfancy, what about the Vortex PST 2.5-10x32 FFP? About a good $500 to $700 cheaper than the Nightforce depending on where you look, but offers comparable features at a much more competitive price point. Not sure if side parallax adjustments or FFP are needed in a scope in this focal range (mid-range), but still nice features to have nonetheless. What are your thoughts?

Something you guys need to look into for an SPR type optic, is the SWFA Super Sniper scope. It's a fixed 10x42, it's got mildot reticle with 1/10 MRAD turrets, its design comes from a gov't contract. 30mm tube. $300. Honestly, the simpler you keep it, the more you will get for your money. The thing is built like an $1100 variable power optic, with glass to compete.

Where red dots shine is when wearing body armor or shooting from less than ideal positions. If that isn't a concern, go for daylight visible illumination in a scope, use a flip front cover, and learn how to shoot 2 eyes open and how to use it as an OEG.

I ran out and got a 1x4 scope about 2 years ago. I quickly found out that learning how to shoot an AR "nose to charging handle" is not compatable with most scopes, but expecially with the 1x4 4" plus eye relief. For my POU (WROL) I'm currently looking into 1.5 or 2 fixed power optic (like the cheaper version of a Trijicon TA44S). My astigmatism could use just a slight boost in magnification, but don't need/want 3 or 4 power.

I liked the RCOs we had in the Marines. Just had to put a piece of electrical tape over the fiber optic to dim the illumination. If you didn't, the chevron would get too fat and make it more difficult to find the tip. a lot of guys would cover it up completely on the range so all you had was a thin black chevron

to compensate for the left spin and wind that day. I finally took two good shots at the second redicule and they hit consistently about six inches apart and my third one missed entirely because the wind changed. When I finally calculated the shot I and later I brought another person back and both of us confirmed it was ~1,128 yards for a .30-06. This is damn near impressive for what was a $300 gun with a $200 scope.

My brother has a 16" carbine ar15 with a dot sight. I am going with a 20" rifle length with a 3-9x40mm scope and angled iron sights. We are a team and work together. He will shine at closer ranges with his shorter barrel and dot sight, but I will be a lot more accurate at longer distances. If I need to hit under 100y then I'll tilt my rifle and use the iron sights.

I had a 3.5 power ACOG on my ar and it was great for close up quick shots within 100 yards and it would hit the target out to 800 yards with the BDC reticle but the green horseshoe was way too bright and I started to want more precision. So I purchased a Weaver tactical with a ffp mil-dot and 1/10 mil adjustment knobs, power 3x to 15x. So I have an even wider field of view at lowest power, the ranging and BDC characteristics of mil-dots at all powers, more precise reticle, and lower price.
