+modap3000 Just mounted a Strike Eagle 1-6, my first multi power. I have no experience with this type of scope, but to me, there seems to be a lot of fish eye and a small eye box. Because of the long optical bell, it is hard to mount far enough forward to get a proper check weld (nose to tip of charging handle).
@RumblestripDotNet9 жыл бұрын
Strike Eagle has been known as having a VERY specific eye relief, long discussion about this on the Brian Enos forums
@alphanumeric15299 жыл бұрын
Rumblestrip.NET I haven't been reading any gun/optics forums, but lemme tell you, it is true. There is a little forward back margin, but like NO left right up down. Any movement and you're seeing the edge of the tube. Combine that with the long ocular bell and no repeatable cheek weld... I'm a little less than happy. The glass itself is clear, with relatively good light transmission. I can use it at 1 power with both eyes open well enough, though I have little experience with that. And at 6 power, it has a large FOV... it is a mixed bag.

Alright Nutn, first comment on your channel and I've been a TNPer since late 2011. I'll try to leave the comment short but information and POU need to be shared. so I have a scope that I have found that seems pretty good for the value (subject to change as usage continues). it is a Redfield Revolution/Tac 3-9x40mm 12.6 oz, MOA reticle and 1/4MOA adjustments turret knobs, turret knobs are resettable. POU, coyote hunting in a high wind area located in Utah. I had purchased the scope from Cabelas for about $190, on sale. It is a 1 inch tube, but 56 MOA elevation and windage adjustment. 3.7-4.2 inches of eye relief. FOV 32.9-13.1 ft @ 100 YD. Fixed Parallax at 150YD. No illumination. It is on my Daniel Defense M4V5 AR-15 chambered in 5.56 so range is already limited to about 600yds (For me). I DO NOT like BDC reticles because I use different ammo in my AR as well conditions can change daily. I do prefer a FFP on multiple and longer distance targets, just because my reticle stays true regardless of power. I do like to range and do calculations with it as well. I think it is important tool to learn, however a range finder and GPS do make it more convenient. I own an FNH TSR in .308, Freaking love the TSR!!, but yes you where not kidding about weight, and its wearing a SWFA SS 3-15 FFP. The Redfield is SFP and true MOA is at x9 power, just something I need to remember. I have been able to hit up to 500meters with both scopes. Not sure if you know but Redfield scopes are assembled in Leopold's home. No I do not represent any of the company's mentioned above, just sharing the knowledge I have that might be interest to you and other TNPer's. Check out the Redfield Revolution/TAC 3-9x40mm

DMS-1 1-4x illuminated scope in American Defense Recon-X 30mm mount - 1 pound 9.6 oz. Aimpoint M2 in Larue LT129 cantilever mount - 11.3 oz. Vortex 3X magnifier in Larue LT649 Pivot mount - 12.2 oz. Aimpoint, Vortex 3x, and Larue mounts all together - 1 pound 7.5 oz. I would have thought otherwise too, but the the big old Aimpoint and magnifier weighs less than a low-power variable illuminated scope. That particular scope is way cheaper, but. . . it does serve as an example.

Hey TNPrs, one scope I find conspicuously absent from this video is the Millet TRS-1. The long and short of it is that it's a 4-16 x 50mm scope, 30mm tube, multi coated lenses, side focusing paralax adjustment, 10 levels of illumination, Army spec mil dot crosshair (at 10 power), with tactical windage and elevation knobs which lock down with finger adjustable tightening rings, 1/4 MOA adjustments, and an included sunshade. At home I've spent a significant amount of time punching paper, turning in sub MOA groups with just about everything I can feed my rifle and even some .4-.6 MOA groups with SSA and handloads from 100 to 600 yards. I've also been hunting with this scope twice outside of my home state and have come home with full coolers and a feeling of great satisfaction. The optic is not without limitations, however. It is rather heavy and bulky, and accordingly is much better suited to use on a rifle whose POU focuses on stationary shooting at extended range. Running or even walking with a rifle at low ready is a chore with this scope, as it is nearly as large and weighty as a baseball bat sitting on top of your rifle. If your rifle exists in a POU which benefits from the added stability of a more weighty system or where bulk is not an unbearable impediment, the TRS-1 exists as a $300 scope (down from ~$550 on Amazon) which fights far above its weight class in terms of the name buying game which is long range glass shopping.

Agreed with comments below. Vortex Viper PST should be on this list. Particularly 2.5x-10x44. No need to fiddle with side focus so it still runs fast, ZERO STOP turrets, Gorgeous glass, incredible warranty, illuminated, GREAT reticle choices, GREAT price! By far would top this list after owning lots of different scopes including schmidt and bender, nightforce, etc.

Hey nutn, have you ever looked at MTC Optisan scopes? We use them primarily on air rifles in the UK, but they have a lot of the features you point to on high end scopes for a fraction of the cost. I've got a fixed 10 power MTC Viper illuminated, 44mm objective, 30mm tube, 1/8 MOA locking adjustable glove friendly turrets. I believe they retail around the 220-250 US mark as the most basic variant. Pretty sure they go by the Optisan brand in the US. From what I've seen, they're really hard to beat in the price range

Another scope to add is the vortex pst either 6-25 or 4-16 both 50mm objective, 30mm tube, illuminated, great glass, zero stop, great turrets in MOA or MRAD, also has FFP . I have the 4-16 and highly recommend it. It is the best scope IMHO under $1,000. The 4-16 FFP street can be found for about $900 Amazon pricing. Again for the amount of features it comes with it is really hard to beat. Also the SWFA 3-15 FFP may also be a great option, no experience on it but have heard good things about it. However, it doesn't come with illumination

Burris 1.5-6x42 m tac with Ballistic AR reticle (not CQ) will be my next purchase, i think nutn would love it. Only 15 oz which is right there with the weaver 1-4, less then the vortex viper 1-4, and you get more magnification and more light transmission with the 42mm obj. Also is illuminated, has capped but resettable adjustable turrets (80 moa), non critical eye relief, and lifetime warranty. Perfect 50-400 yard scope imho. Oh and price tag is $399, tough to beat with those features.

I run the Leupold VX-2 ultralight 2-7x28 scope. I have 45 degree offset iron sights for the 1X close range. It's super light at 8.5 ounces while giving you 7X magnification to play with (which is plenty for 400 yards). I zero at 50 yards which lets me connect at the crosshairs between 1-300 yards and pull up 2.5 MOA for 400 yards. I mount with a 3 ounce aero precision mount for a total weight of 11.5 ounces. Very happy with it :)

The Vortex StrikeEagle is excellent for 1-6x scenarios on a 5.56, etc for about $300. For a .308 or larger and for the shooter who wants to shoot 800 yards or more, the Vortex Viper PST is a badass scope for under $1k. Both are illuminated, both have 30mm tubes, and their optical clarity is top notch. Not to mention, they have an Unlimited Lifetime Warranty that's hard to beat.

Love my Viper PST 6-24x for what it is but the glass is severely overrated by folks on the net. It's ok but I think a VX-3 Leupold blows the Viper away in edge to edge clarity and low-light. The great thing about my PST is how much ass the turrets and the reticle (EBR-1 MOA) kick. They are perfect for my use.

I think the one aspect of optics that is overemphasized and misunderstood is magnification values required. OE variables of course will dictate. for my 30th birthday I dished out for a Sako TRG . I'd love a S&B ($4,500) for it but it wasn't in the budget. My second choice was a Nightforce NXS ($2,400Aus) cause for long range shooting & the price it had the biggest overall elevation adjustment of 100moa to take me out past a km. But seeing as everything in Australia is double the price of the US (Sako cost $4,995)....I looked at a 'budget' option. In the end I bought a Sightron SIII 5-25x50 for $850US. I'm pretty happy with the Burris Mtac line -- they are on the heavier end of the spectrum (1.5-6x for 20oz) but are illuminated and hold up well. I like the reticle and the 1-4x model is lighter. They have good range for the eye box too. They also don't break the bank at $350ish. I also like the vortex viper pst 2.5-10 illuminated. It's 18.8 oz, does have a zero stop, and can be had for around $550. Only down side is the fixed eye relief at 4". Both of these have a low enough magnification for cqb but enough power to reach out to 400 or so yards and be effective.

My TNP drills have taught us a lot & I have modified my thinking on "tactical scopes" just a little bit For instance the Soldier Boy Drills have the shooter engaging 50 to 400 yds at night in the snow. Vortex uses zero stop on their scopes, some are not very expensive.... Nikon Scopes are also very affordable and they have spot on software for free so it can be adapted to different rifles. good glass on the whole. The biggest problem I find with modern glass is the outer fringing on the glass that is very distracting, I see it on almost every MTAC scope I have ever seen. On the Leupold, I prefer the M1 and M2 dials as well, I carried a M1 dialed scope on my first deployment and it was switched out to a M3 on my last deployment, I swapped them out in country with the help of the optics shop at Baghram. Magnifiers are great of you can mount them and dismount them, I used one in the past with a GG&G mount that swaps with a PVS14. The ACO is not as much of a value as the PRO aimpoint. I use the NV function on my rifles because I use them to hunt.

For close-medium range/ 3gun stuff I like the Bushnell Plc throwdown 1-4x24 ffp illuminated scope (priced right around the $200 range). For medium- long range shooting I like the Bushnell elite tactical 3200 fixed 10x scope (again around the $200 range). I have all 3 and they all work great for what I need/use them for.

What??? Did someone forget about the SWFA SS Straight 10 mag w/ 30mm 42 objective at 300 dollars. I love their customer service and other SS versions.
@skyhop9 жыл бұрын
+Big Gee Great scope for a bolt gun, bad scope for a "tactical carbine." Straight 10 power is not going to be much fun when you have to run 0-50 yard drills with a semi-auto.
@slightenigma9 жыл бұрын
+Tombs Clawtooth I agree with you there and would offer two solutions, the 45 degree off set irons, or the SWFA 1 to 6 mag illuminated scope. I picked it up for 3 gun and my 30-30 lever. 6X is good enough for game out to 200 yards.
@skyhop9 жыл бұрын
Big Gee The straight 6 should work for about any distance pretty well, especially on a 30-30. Granted, I'm comfortable with higher magnification than most even at shorter distances.
@thurstonhowell97829 жыл бұрын
He may not have forgotten the SWFA offerings. He may have chosen not to include them due to the fact that both of the models you mentioned are over 20 ounces without a mount.

+Thurston Howell weight is a good point. Ounces add up to pounds and pounds can fatigue the shooter. I prefer straight magnifications with HD glass at bargain prices. Everyone has preferences. I tend to shoot more statically at distance then CQB drilling. So my bias is towards clarity, while a CQB guy would be more bias to less weight. It seems these SS scopes are over looked and when I had an issue with one I had owned over three years, the. company swapped out the scope.

Sometimes, the only decision more complex to make besides what rifle to buy, is what optic. Thanks for the great overview of some optic options, Nutnfancy. Also, I recommend you check out some optics by Vortex, Hi-Lux and Primary Arms. They've got some very high value optics that would be great for TNP.

I'm not really a scope guy I only own 1 at the moment that I actually pleased with its a Vortex ceasefire 2 with illuminated V dot it's 1x4 and it what I have, simple light and easy to use, also got it on Amazon for like $160.00 I think it may be cheaper now and no one can argue the quality of Vortex scopes.

Hahaha @ the VXR. Way back in the day when you were advocating midrange magnification, I snagged a 2-7x33mm VXR for $420 shipped new. It has been an excellent scope, but I like different things now and shoot differently. I run a trijicon TA31F now and prefer it over the VXR for 99% of things, it has as much field of view at 4x as the VXR has at 2x. It's lighter, it's smaller, and it's tougher. But yeah for the money the VXR is excellent.

Every one has their own preferences. I think the important thing is to show the options and to give people a little to think about. Its cool to see some cheaper priced optics and there are beginning to be a lot more cheaper optics with higher end features. Does that mean that they're as nice as a higher end option? Eh, probably not, but they work and most people can find the value in it. I'm personally a big fan of Burris's XTR II scopes. There are a lot of scopes here out there not covered and lets face it, Nut'n isn't made of money, and its his video with his spin. The only thing I can say is take your time and research. Theres so many options out there that it gets mind boggling and hard to keep everything straight some times.

Nutnfancy, I recently picked up a Mueller Tactical 4-16x50 AO scope and I'm impressed, I think you should check them out. They have a few minor downfalls but the clarity of the glass really makes it a good value for the price. Merry Christmas!

Happy New Year Nutnfancy, I REALLY enjoy the information and opinions you share with us, I only want to offer up my opinion re: an inexpensive First focal plane mil/ mil w/ ranging, parallax and illumination w/ an aiming chevron inside of a partial circle. that perhaps you might want to review/ give us your opinion on. I have used it for a year and for the money think it is a very good scope, they also offer a "R" reticle like a Horus type 4-14 w/ 44mm objective and 30mm tube. Primary Arms ACSS HUD DMR 308 and or R-Grid Reticle. Regards Bill

I'm still torn as what to put on my ruger 10/22 TD, ive read the scope has to be under 10 inches to fit into the bags pouches properly. I didnt grow up with having firearms, so this is a whole new world to me. But that being said, buying a 150+ scope for a plinking gun, just doesnt make all that much sense to me.

U need to mention the cost difference between first focal plane and second focal plane, especially in your 1-4 mag range. Most BDC reticles are 2nd focal plane. First focal is ALWAYS more expensive. I hate 2nd personally, but for my AR it's perfect. For my GAP-10, its first all the way.
