I guess I must add a warning here for others - although there are benefits to consuming nutritional yeast, as with most things it is not wise to generalize and call it a miracle food and good for everything. For example, this same channel has a video "Is Nutritional Yeast Healthy for Everyone?" where it is discussed how immunity stimulating abilities of nutritional yeast can worsen symptoms of Crohn's disease - a disease where your immunity is hyperactive to begin with. Our immune system is in fine balance - sometimes you need it to be more active to fight diseases, but sometimes its too active and causes damage itself such as when people suffer from autoimmune diseases. So never assume and generalize - always check if someone has put it to the test, especially if you want to consume something in large doses.

I guess if you have a pre existing issue then you may be sensitive to a lot of particular foods. It's not that cheap anyway and you need to eat a lot instead of taking b12 supplements or shots.

Dr. Greger, can you please recommend a cancer “boot camp” similar to the Longevity Center that your grandmother Frances went to for her heart disease? We have been mostly vegan for 7 years but my husband has been diagnosed with esophageal cancer. With chemoradiation he is expected to survive past one year but 5 years is not in the cards. We’d like to improve his odds of survival and quality of life. It would be a bonus if it were located in the Pacific NW. Thanks so much..

@@novembah only fortified nutritional yeast does. It doesn’t occur naturally in the yeast. I don’t like that they add it. I get natural organic nutritional yeast and I take b12 sublingually as liquid methylcobalamin and I think that’s the best way.

Nutritional yeast seems to be a trigger with migraines for me. Many years ago I read that there is quite a lot of arsenic in nutritional yeast if it is not certified organic and non-gmo. I'm wondering if that is correct or not? I've never wanted to bother testing it out as the migraines are debilitating and can last for weeks at a time on one side and then switching to the other side.

I LOVE nutritional yeast, it is the one true super food. Be careful as the high purine content can raise uric acid (causing gout and kidney stones). Food's Alive non fortified is best, 2 pounds for $40. I eat some meat, but the trace minerals and all B vitamins are incredible in nutritional yeast.

Thank you, is this the same influence people are talking about when they say nutritional yeast is an excitotoxin? This video says somehow it boosts the number of white cells, is it because there's something in it the body does not like? It looks like it's handy against tumors but wondering if we should be eating it all the time

If nutritional yeast is just dead yeast (same type as in bread) than shouldn't eating in the form of bread (preferably whole grain) also work?

Unfortunately, nutritional yeast absolutely wrecks me GI-wise -- doubled over in pain with IBS/Chrohn's-like symptoms. Wasn't always like that, but started in my mid/late 30s and took a period of time to narrow down the offending ingredient. A very inconvenient ingredient to have to avoid while following a plant-based diet. It's in many vegan prepared foods, but silver-lining, it means I am consuming less processed stuff as a result.
@chandelie4
@chandelie4 2 жыл бұрын
You may have Crohn's disease or at the very least, an overgrowth of yeast. People with crohn's disease make antibodies to yeast and therefore have big immune system reactions to nutritional yeast. See Dr. Greger's video on the topic. I have Crohn's disease and therefore avoid it.

@robeson1070
@robeson1070 2 жыл бұрын
@@stephsmemo So, if it's a listed ingredient I get GI inflammation, lots of burping is the first sign and you can guess the rest over the course of a day. When I got and tried straight Nooch I was doubled over in pain within a few hours. Other trigger ingredients I have noticed (or, at least, am fairly certain of) are onion and possibly excessive pea protein, but yeast is well confirmed at this point.

@@robeson1070 same here, nutritional yeast absolutely destroys my Gi, it’s something you have to test out, not for everyone especially those with Candida, IBS, IBD. Gregor actually did a video over this on how nutritional yeast with candida is linked with irritable bowel disease and IBS.

I wonder if it has Vitamin B12 in it. The fortified ones do. Sometimes vitamin B12 gives you acne. It’s better to get a natural organic nutritional yeast and take B12 separately. That’s my guess. I’m curious to know what caused it.

@@tnijoo5109 It was the Frontier Co-op nutritional yeast. Not fortified and no b12 in the ingredients or nutrition facts label. I have been 100% low-fat vegan for 10 years. I usually eat no more than 3-4 ingredients throughout any given day. It was very easy to narrow it down to the nutritional yeast.
