2008 scion xd. Im a visual learner. 48 years old. The xd consumes 3/4 of a gallon of water with zero leaks and zero smoke out of the exhaust. Gonna swap the thermostat and new rad cap just to make sure. Also gonna look at the plugs and smell em for coolant. If it fails I'm going to follow your procedure here. Truly a blessing to have someone like you posting such an amazing detalied well lit video on this. Thank you so much .@@NutsandBoltswithTone

Are you kidding me, this video is great. Your procedure is very accurate. If you read the Haynes diy manual, you have to remove the engine, oil pan, and use special alignment tools. Have done this successfully a few times and rebuilt a Corolla motor. If has just been a few years. Thanks once again you make this job look easy.

Btw, that head bolt socket is not a triple square, it is a double hex. They are different. If you use a triple square, it will round the bolts. This is the best video I've found otherwise, I used this as a guide to do mine.

Great vid. Sad to hear the fan broke, but at least the head gasket didn't blow due to bad design. I am very happy to see the rocker arm system over the valves. Not many videos take into account that the newer corollas such as this one did not use the shim over bucket design. I have an intermittent tick coming from the valve train area and I'm thinking it's a worn lifter/rocker now especially after seeing this video.
@NutsandBoltswithTone
@NutsandBoltswithTone 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, if you have a ticking like that and you suspect lifters then you can try something. There is this product Marvel Mystery Oil, get a quart of that, put 1/2 of it in, put a thottle stick on the throttle and let it run for about 20-25 minutes. I have done head gasket jobs and after I got done it developed a loud ticking from the valves, I did this with Marvels and completely went away. Thanks for watching.

Head bolts are not a 12mm triple square. They are a 10mm bi-hexagon. Bi-hex has the same number of points but the angles are different. A 12mm triple square is a little sloppy and makes the bolts extremely easy to strip. Great video by the way. The repair procedures first step says to remove the engine/trans axle assembly. I couldn't see the reason for this, that is when I stumbled across your video.

Amazing video! Quick question, I have a 08 Scion xD and the engine bay is a bit smaller the the Corolla and not much room between the firewall and a block. You think this will cause an issue?? Also, I’ve been burning a bit of oil for the last year or so (290k miles and only 2qts every 6k miles) and was thinking I should throw a set of rings at it while I’m in there. Are all 4 of the the rod caps accessible if I drop the pan? Any info is much appreciated thank you!

@NutsandBoltswithTone

I believe there is a spot on the cam to use a wrench and hold with wrench then break loose cam gear, or you will need a cam gear holding tool, hold sprocket and break loose or an air impact or big cordless impact usually works just hold cam with wrench. Why would the chain tensioner fail when reused? How likely is that?
@NutsandBoltswithTone
@NutsandBoltswithTone 2 жыл бұрын
It is not likely however if a shop takes a part an engine and does not recommend tensioner and the tensioner fails then the shop could be held liable for the repair. Timing chain tensioners do fail, so it is a possibility. Let's put it this way if I was taking a part my engine I would replace the chain tensioner. Thank you for watching.

I just started mine, the only thing bad about mine is the water pump went out and I didn't know it I replace the water pump and it's not overheating but believe it blew the head gasket in between the cylinders so I've got compression going from one cylinder to another cylinder because it was pinging knocking and finally I'm assuming the gasket whole got so big that it wouldn't even crank at all because it had no compression because all the compression was going out the wrong cylinder.

Hello experts, My mechanic changed my top cylinder on my car toyota corolla 09 model due to a sound at the top cylinder. Note: that was the only issue my car had before I took it to him. Unfortunately, after the completion, I went to pick it up and in a 5 minutes drive away from the workshop, the car started misfiring and overheating. Eventually, the car couldn't start anymore and the mechanic went ahead and ringed my engine that there's low compression. I told him he spoilt my engine because it was in a good condition before I took it to him apart from the sound at the top cylinder. Please, what do you think caused that? He changed the top gasket as well. Your expert feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
