I guess aside from the episode of morty's mind blowers where he found out that the Alien that he killed in battle had an actual afterlife or in the Aliens case since he didnt die in battle, A hell. He even just stated in this episode that he wouldn't be able to get into an afterlife because his athiestic mind is something that wouldn't allow him to believe in one. and only after testing if an afterlife was actually real with actual consistency did it fuel his ability to believe in an afterlife. So because he didnt see consistent results of an afterlife existing in the past, he therefore wouldnt be able to get into one, and instead got uploaded to one of his many clones.

Remember Air Force Wong, when the seer saw a future where Rick was in danger from a brown monster, and Rick ignored the warning by "putting it up on the fridge"? Also, the pope wasn't automatically channeling the energy to himself, he'd hacked Rick's earth-bound relay for the energy and redirected the stream. I'm also fairly certain that Rick disconnected himself from Operation Phoenix so that he could stay dead, rather than being redirected to anyone else's clone, and in doing so, he shut down Morty's connection as well. That's what the Big Red Button was for, to make the process manual rather than automatic - and then they just kept that as the status quo for the joke. He probably would have been successful if he'd just had the AI do it instead of bringing Morty along.

He said it himself he still doesn't believe it as a heaven or afterlife but a collect of thoughts that feeds of the thoughts of dead people. The pokemon game Arceus and the manga actually does suggest a reason why pokeballs work the way they do to make pokemon loyal. Pokemon can shrink on their own to the size that fits in a pokeball naturally to hide in the grass, thats also how they dissapear when fainted. And the pokeball triggers this effect to catch them, and releasing them from the pokeball triggers their imprinting psychology somehow so they learn to like whoever caught them over time.
