When you guys were talking about Dragonball’s simplistic power system I was waiting for someone to mention this, but nobody did. For me, there’s a moment in the series where the power system could’ve been significantly deepened, but unfortunately nothing ever really came of it. Specifically, I’m thinking of the tournament where Tenshinhan and Chaozu are introduced. Until that point, ki was just energy that dictated your strength and speed and if you were very advanced at controlling it you could shoot beams of it from your hands. Then these two guys show up and they’re flying, using telepathy and telekinesis, growing an extra set of arms, making clones, and so on. This could’ve been a turning point in the series where Goku learns that he’s only scratched the surface of what can be accomplished with ki. Instead it became something more like a nostalgic relic of a forgotten era when combat in the series was more varied and interesting, as the power system only became MORE focused on strength, speed, and big ass energy beams as the series progressed.

Butt Cheeks First of all Gon sacrificed his nen and his life to gain “Adult Gon” he didn’t “tiMe tRaVeL” or “mAniPulAt hiS cElls” He went through a process of giving up everything to gain that power, he used “Everything”. Second I’ll at mitt the nen system when it comes to “restrictions” is little broken, but it makes sense you give up something equally as important, so there’s no winning. Also the reason why Adult Gon was so powerful was because when he was giving up everything, it was for one person. The more people you use the restriction on the weaker it becomes. They pretty much explained this all in the show if you were paying attention.

@Trex 2402 anyways, the system is good except the bullshit that gon used. It was abused as plotarmor instead of used in a good way which kinda killed the anime for me. Both arcs they used it killed the hype for me, especially since everything gon and killua had worked for in the ant arch was just thrown to the side with gon going ham with that bullshit. I thought we'd see the most awesome fight ever in hunter x hunter with gon and killua going ham with tactics and maybe finding a weakness to her or something but nop. Why make an actual good fight when you can just end it in 2 minutes right? The big hype moment of the arc just fucking ruined and i'll never forgive hxh for that.

My biggest problem with Fairy tails magic system is that is never focuses on any of the really cool Magics, or just uses them for gags, leaving all the work to the crew (who all use basic elemental magic!). One of my favorite side characters was the gun girl, her magic was explained as what erza does, BUT WITH GUNS!! and they never let her do anything cool

You've got the grasp of it. Complex/unique/interesting magics never really get their due. +the series never really gives a reason as to why a mage doesn't learn more than one type of magic either. Its not like black clover where they're stuck with one tome, they just learn what they want, and yet not a single mage finds it useful to learn a counter to their first magic's counter. \o/

I love Pokemon but fire types are good on grass types and a lot more is set in stone with that battle system. I see your point. But I changed mine and I haven't even finished stardust crusaders yet. Sad that Nux didn't really get to defend World Trigger too much, but hey; at least more people have heard about it! lol. If I had to describe the power system, I'd probably describe it as one of the most "realistic" and consistent: Even though "Trion" is the energy source in-universe, it's more of just a type of ammo, or tool for characters; it's only a single stat for characters. Individual technique and tactics make up the real differences in fights. Most characters can also only choose from a fixed set of "Triggers" or weapons; that consistency makes for more "realistic" battles, where what wins isn't some magic mcguffin or friend-feelings, but actual strategy that characters have to practice and perfect. Half the show is either people sitting in a room discussing strategy, or a flashback to people sitting in a room discussing strategy. But that's not to say it's boring either; a lot of people are fans *because* of those strategic moments. Because the rules of the world are so consistent, it makes everything in the show more impactful: When a character succeeds, you've already seen the work they put into the training room to reach victory. When a new secret strategy turns the tides, your mind is actually blown alongside other characters, because they're genuine twists using the in-universe rules, which you already knew! And when a character loses, you really feel for their loss and struggle, because it really matters, and hits them hard. The author uses the power system to drive character development moments for all 150 some characters in the show. There's even a quote in the show: "Don't get me wrong, I love passionate battles. But, if you attribute the outcome of the match to passion, you might as well be saying that the loser just didn't want it enough." Feelings-fueled battles in Shonen are great, but it's still pretty limiting if all your character development is on a battlefield. In World Trigger, feelings don't drive the actual fighting, they drive the character's plans, coordination, goals, and reactions: everything about the character before, during, and after a battle. In World Trigger, because the combat feels real, the characters feel *real*. If you've made it this far, congrats! If anything in this catches your eye, I'd encourage you to give World Trigger a shot! It isn't perfect, but it is definitely an underrated gem. The first arc or so is slow, as it sets up a lot of those rules I mentioned, but soon after that, things pick up. Plus, the second season just started up with a higher budget for animation, so now's a perfect time to catch up!

There are a lot of rules and it can get tedious when nothing but dialogue happens but it’s important because once you know the rules, they don’t change. They are set. And everything that happens within the rules are so tight and seamless that it makes it the best system. Where stands rely a little too much on ass pulls that seemingly come out of no where, Nen has so much forethought put into it, not only by the characters but by the author, that you can’t really compare them.

The power balance is way out of whack in Magi, if you’re a pure physical fighter or just a straight up mage in magi you’re going to get fucked by a Djin holder even though Djin have only one kind of magic each while mages strive to learn multiple kinds and develop them all to high degrees, and some pure physical fighters are leagues above the techniques of the weapons the Djin holder uses there are even some mages who are very competent physical fighters as well but they get stomped on by not even Djin holders, just the house hold vessels. Meanwhile in Bleach The playing field is leveled because everyone has “Djin” aka a Zanpakutō that they can develop their skills with but they’re also rewarded for versatility. Kido users can get taken out by pure Hakudo fighters, someone with a very powerful physical zanpakutō can be out done by a Kido master, Urahara with his very Kido based power is also a very effective physical combattent one of the best in the series, the revers is true in Unohana who is nothing but pure physical power with her zanpakutō but she balanced herself out by being masterful in Kido and Kiado.

Never said I was okay with Pokemon nor did I give an opinion on it. I have disliked Hitman Reborn's powers being introduced with little or logical explanation since episode 1. You expect me to believe that mafiosos can create time travel cannons, ugly babies with big heads, and guns that somehow give you life makes any sense at all? Naruto/Dragon Ball-Chakra being natural energy in all humans Bleach-Spiritual Energy allowing you to see Ghosts and be able to feel them One Piece- Haki being the same as natural energy to an extent , Devil Fruits being introduced as intentionally mysterious fruits literally named Devil that give you special powers. Hitman Reborn powers make no sense at all. It doesn't matter if you think it's good or not. My suspension of disbelief is completely called into attention by nonsensical and unrealistic the series is in its setting. I already mentioned that I hate how the show has the characters power up every arc in a generic fashion. The show introduces a completely random new power up every arc. The rings into boxes to summon cute animals were one of the most stupidest powercreeps in the series.

If you would have watched it you would know more about the tri ne set. However, it doesn't matter how much explanation of a power system a anime gives you, it's still an anime. It is not going to make since either way. It will only make since in the world it was created for. You say dying will flames aren't good because it doesn't give any insight but the 8 chapters/3 episode explanation of nen doesn't make it better either. It's just over complicated. Chakra and spiritual pressure is simple but it's still imaginary. Overall POKEMON was on this list before dying will flames, whether or not it should have won, it deserves to be on there before that at minimum.

Woah, pre-vtuber Nux! Been a long time. It was pretty jarring to me when he switched (not negative at all). I admit I haven't watched much of World Trigger, but when I had severe pneumonia, severe sepsis & severe anemia simultaneously years ago and was in the hospital thinking "well... I'm so weak I can't even get up... Might as well read manga before I potentially die!" I discovered World Trigger and a few other series that many people currently only know of due to the anime versions. That hospitalization sucked, but was indirectly responsible for me discovering I love manga relatively equally to anime.

1:01:30 I think Nux forgot that in order to use alchemy you need a transmutation circle. So certain characters only use certain alchemy because that's the transmutation circle they have on hand. The reason Roy Mustang never creates a spear is because it'd be a pain in the ass to sit down and draw a circle to do that if he doesn't have to.

I wanted to leap in and defend world trigger so bad😫. I know there's no way it can compete with Nen but it is so much more epic than what it was made out to be. Since everybody basically has all the same abilities as you can always take out someone with more skill or trion than you if you have a good strategy. And the addition of black triggers who choose their owner and are made from dying lets them bring in new powers. Also since its mostly based on strategy power boosts are always thought of then implemented instead of just raising you power level woth your fighting spirit. This is so long but natural trion abilities are never really OP it mostly an auxiliary skill and sometimes dont even have anything to do with combat. Even Jins future sight while op its a lot less op than it seems cause he has to look at a bunch of different possibilities and try to nudge it towards the ones he wants.

Would have liked to see Overlord. It'd be a great entry for the "video game" combat system and has a few quirks of its own (though I doubt it'd win). Also, Pokemon... while I can't get too hyped over the game or anime, it has so much potential if you try to theorize how the game world would work in a more realistic setting. To start off, screw four moves. You might think that shouldn't matter when comparing it to literally every other series without a move limit. But that's because you're forgetting certain moves, like imprison. Could breathing be considered a move? Then there are abilities like protect, foul play, substitute, psyche up. Without a turn based battle system (and the anime's wierdness) this can lead to some seriously interesting fights. Only having a single Pokemon out at a time can get kicked too. You could have multiple out, focussing on how well a trainer can direct a full team and how autonomous the individual Pokemon are. The battles could start looking like spy operations with the trainer in a command center and the Pokemon as agents. Perhaps a non-combat Pokemon could be used to set up surveillance using moves like substitute, agility, or teleport. Pokemon is the only series I've ever really been interested in for fanfic (though nobody ever really digs in to this side of it).

I just want to point something out about FMA's power system that they didn't mention. The reason that the various State Alchemists don't use each others tricks, is because, unless you've seen The Truth, and paid the price for it, you have to draw a transmutation circle to do alchemy, and most State Alchemists haven't seen The Truth, so they can only do the transmutation that they put onto their equipment. Take Roy Mustang for example, the reason he can snap and cause an explosion, is because the gloves make a spark, and the circle on the glove allows for the manipulation of oxygen, it does not let him change the shape of the ground, or turn a steel arm into a blade. But by manipulating oxygen he can turn water into hydrogen gas and oxygen gas, like he did against Lust. Major Armstrong has his circles on his spiked glove things, Kimblee has them on his palms, everyone who does alchemy, who's not Ed, Al, Izumi, Father, or Hohenheim, has to either draw a circle, or already have a circle drawn on them, or something they're wearing

A lot of weird problems with FMAB battle system. Asking why alchemists don't all use each others powers is like asking why electrical engineers cant also just perform a root canal. It takes years of study to understand and execute alchemy, especially specialist types, not to mention the limitation of having to create a transmutation circle, which are usually either tattooed or on clothing like gloves. Ed and Al dont need the circle because of the experience they went through. They're the exception, not the rule. Anyway, I haven't fully finished the video so I'm not sure if this is addressed or not, but that was bugging me when you guys were talking about it lol

Yamcha invented a power in Original Dragonball where he made a ball that he could telekinetically control, it had zero power behind it because he had such little ki within him, but the attack was so fast and accurate, he was able to land a clean hit on Master Roshi. Not a graze, not a scratch. it was a clean hit. Yamcha, a guy with no real formal training and was basically a mook even at that stage, was able to land a clean hit on one of THE most powerful martial artists at the time in the manga, using only his willpower and spirital energy. Krillin's biggest weakness when it comes tot he destructo disk is it really hard to hit. Now imagine if Yamcha taught krillin how to make his ball and they combined the two techniques. It would have resulted in one of the most powerful moves in the entire series

Honorable mention: Fire Force’s Fire Generation battle system Basically the power system is divided into 3 categories of “generations” First Generation: basically people who are victims of Spontaneous Human Combustion, people who burst to flames and lose their mentality and become flame monsters Second Generation Fire Users: Fire soldiers who cannot ignite their own flame but can manipulate & control Fire Third Generation Fire user: can create Fire & have complete mastery over their own flame. Only a percentage of people are second generation and even fewer are third gen. Fire Force is so cool bc everyone has essentially similar powers but it up to the user and type of Generation you are to be creative with your flame and fighting style. It’s balanced bc a 3rd gen is not nessecarily “stronger” than a 2nd gen. Through limitation, Ohkubo the mangaka is extremely creative

@@Garymgk I saw HunterxHunter, and I recently started continuing the manga. So i don't have thorough knowledge on the mechanics of the Nen Beasts. But I still think that the Esper powers from Railgun are gravely underestimated. First, I think the depth of the Esper powers is highlighted with the Level upper, the Misaka network, Exterior, Multi-Skill and the Poltergeist, which all stems from the basic idea of AIM diffusion field. Now let’s look at a more direct comparison of powers usages between both Mikoto and Killua. I’m not talking in terms of strength or character writing. I think Killua wins in both aspects, but in terms of power usage I think Mikoto has a lot more interesting things going on. Her use of power really highlights the possibilities of adept control of electricity. Let’s look at Killua’s usage first. There’s obviously the classic lightning attack. Then there’s Godspeed which is the most interesting use of Killua’s electricity. They’re very well thought out abilites and they feel so unique that they could only work on Killua. Now let’s look at Mikoto. Just as Killua, she’s able to send lightning at others as well and we also saw her use her control of electricity to control her body movement (of course she couldn’t achieve something like Godspeed since she doesn’t have “preprogrammed” combat abilities like Killua). Next she also uses it to manipulate electronic information. That is how she’s able to hack into computers and camera systems and such. Lastly she also uses applications of electromagnetism. She uses it to increase her mobility and it also allows her to adhere to ceilings and walls. It also let’s her create weapons out of substances like sand and to round it up we can’t forget about the railgun from which she gets her nickname. The best part is that the reason she’s able to use all those powers is because she understands the scientific concepts behind them. What this means is that the limit of Mikoto’s powers is not something individualistic like talent, but what human science understands about how the world works. You can extrapolate this to any of the other Esper abilities. Now if we summarize, we have Killua, who uses electricity for direct strikes and a bio-electrical ability, while on the other hand we have Mikoto, who uses direct attacks, bio-electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. You could say that Killua could do the same things as well, but he doesn’t. I guess the lesson to learn is that both power systems present an incredible amount of potential. And that in actuality picking the superior one is not as easy as it sounds. In the case of Killua and Mikoto I think the latter highlights that incredibly high potential of electricity users a lot better. My final thoughts on this are that Nen gets a lot more love mainly because it’s supported by a more complex story than the Railgun franchise, which allows more interesting or unique parts of the power system to be shown, needless to say that the Railgun franchise has some very neat aspects that are just as interesting as Nen.6
