I’m impressed with that level of performance out of a GT 1030. Definitely gonna try this out with my laptop that has a mobile 1050 Ti. This should help me finally get better consistency/even better FPS with more demanding titles, although the cpu is really what holds things back in my opinion. It’s a i5-7300HQ (so mad I didn’t go with an 8th Gen i5 or at least a 7th Gen i7) which wouldn’t have been too bad a couple of years ago. But 4c/4t with an all-core turbo of 3.1Ghz doesn’t quite cut it for some newer titles. I’d like to think using this scaling application would help with cpu demand as well, since it’s rendering at a lower resolution and the gpu is doing the rest. But I’ll have to find out when I get a chance later haha

If you average 50FPS, adding a custom resolution of 50HZ allows you enable vsync and enjoy tear free experience. For those of you who don't know, vsync works in multiples, so at 60HZ, the target is 16ms(60FPS), if the target is missed, then next target is 33ms(30FPS) This causes stutter if you can't maintain 60FPS. If you can't hit 60FPs but can average 50, then, vsync at50HZ is better as this will allow you to run a more smooth game. If you don't care about screen tearing then this has no meaning to you but if you do, this is a good strategy. You can make custom resolutions from the Nvidia Control Panel.

I have Gt 1030 2G GDDR5 paired with an I5 4570 and 16Gb of ram running at 16 mhz, personally I use every trick in the book to squeeze more performance out of this card and the thing that has helped a lot is using Custom resolutions such as 900x900p 75hz at which games like resident evil 3 remake run at a constant 60fps and hit 75fps at times with nearly all setting on maxium possible, doom eternal runs at a constant 60fps with a mixure of high and low settings and dynamic resolution scale but it's more playable than 720p 30fps. so if you guys happen to have a gt 1030 that you have to use then try creating custom resolutions such as 900x900, 1000x900, 1200x900, 1300x900 and so on you'll have blackbars at both sides of the screen but the image quality will remain at native resolution.
@Davidx_1172 жыл бұрын
That's a neat idea but the problem I see is the game not looking right in those weird aspect ratios, many people don't like stretching old 4:3 games to 16:9 so taking 16:9 and squeezing it to 1:1 or other weird aspect ratio sounds like a bad idea. I'll have to give it a try though as I'm curious, and I guess with low end hardware you may not be too picky anyway (Edit: a lot of modern games do have other aspect ratios besides 16:9, but still never seen 1:1)
@Afonso.Soares2 жыл бұрын
If games accept those weird aspect ratios, great. I’m ok with running at a lower resolution now, thanks to NIS, I just wish there was more support for non-squared pixels, both from system and software. There’s only one axis to tamper with, leading to better image, second only to checkerboard.

After looking into these in some depth, I decided that the difference between using spatial upscalers like FSR / NIS, and just simply using the resolution scale slider, was negligible. I guess it's easier than creating custom resolutions if a game doesn't have a scale slider, and it's not like their existence hurts anyone, so while part of me gets very annoyed when spatial upscaling is touted as some kind of special feature, I've decided there's more important stuff in the world to get upset about.

Pascal and Maxwell based GPUs take a performance penalty with the new NIS scaling and sharpening in drivers 496.76 to 511.72 compared to Turing and Ampere base GPUs. NIS is performed on shaders for Pascal and Maxwell rather than the dedicated hardware present for Ampere and Turing based GPUs. There is a workaround follows for Pascal and Maxwell that involves changing a Nvidia registry setting to enable an older scaling and sharpening method in drivers 496.76 to 511.72. The framerate difference is quite significant for Pascal and Maxwell GPUs. In this case it will have some impact on cpu as there's more of a overhead adding a 3rd party but that's not "badly written", that's the obvious and nornal cost of it not being native and it works great if you are gpu limited not cpu limited. Crazy question here... Can you combine DSR* with NIS? Let me explain. Lets say one has a GTX 1060 6GB (or equivalent). This gpu can easily run classic titles at 1440p. If we take 67% of 2160p we get 1447.2p which is barely above 2K. So this (internal) rendering resolution should not be a problem for the gpu. The added sharpening factor could further improve image quality. At least in theory. *Not to be confused with DLDSR which is Deep Learning DSR and is only for the RTX series.

Can you get some interframe blending to go with that 30fps? I mean if a game isn't twitch reaction heavy, that's probably indistinguishable from 60
@Fender1782 жыл бұрын
Man this is a nice feature to have. And It even works on AMD cards via a 3rd party program called Lossless Scaling which can be purchased on Steam. This also can be useful for devices like the Steam Deck that are limited hardware wise that may struggle playing games like Cyberpunk 2077.
@frozenturbo86232 жыл бұрын
@@randomguydoes2901 Yep, RSR is basically FSR but for every single game that doesn't even have to support it but it's RDNA and RDNA2 only so you can see yourself using it on the new steam deck, consoles or using low end cards in the architecture.

In my experience it is better to lower the resolution. For example I tried playing AC Origins on my 4K TV using the GTX 1650 oc. 4K is of course impossible, but the card never dips below 30 on WQHD (very high settings, AA low). So I could use Nvidia's adaptive sync to lock it to 30. Locks awesome! NIS however didn't, because I needed to render at 1080p in order to get the same performance. Strangely using the resolution slider and having the menu running at 4K wasn't an option. It had the same performance hit as NIS while looking of course even worse when at 50%. However I see that NIS can make sense when you only need a small performance increase.

You forgot to mention half refresh rate vsync in the Nvidia driver as well. Also a good one.

I'm kind of wondering if AMD and Nvidia are offering these techniques so that people can hold on to old cards or buy used ones instead of them actually offering any budget cards? I fondly remember the days where I bought a 7870 for 250EUR, and was able to play games at 4x the resolution of the XBOX360 and PS3 versions, and at 60fps instead of 30-ish xD
@JinghisKhan2 жыл бұрын
I wonder if you can enable all three at the same time, and what that does for performance. Say a RTX 2060 with DLSS + NIS running a game that has software-based FSR as well.

Use lossless scaling on steam it injects fsa to any game. Some it really helps others not as much but for under 5$ its well worth it. Many options to adjust quality and performance.

technically nvidia image scaling was available in older drivers it was just called something different, and it didn't have the sharpening filter, but the old version actually gives higher FPS because of the lack of sharpening. It might be cool to see this tested although it isn't practical.

So the 750ti will have a resssurection? Please test it with NIS, along with GTX 960 and 1050ti. This is very good news for those with lesser cards.

So I got an optiplex 380 quite a few years back, had a core 2 duo in it but the real eye opener for me was the gt 210 that it had, paired with the core 2 duo it was pretty difficult to play many games with it, but I managed, I got both portal games to run at nearly playable as well as rocket league, other than that I really only used it for 2d games or simple games like Minecraft, I would really love if you could do a video on this card if you manage to get one or already have, I love messing with old tech just cause and it would be nice to see what that card is really capable of Edit: just realized you already have videos on it lol

My PCs do not struggle to play modern games. I struggle to pay a $70 entry price for yet another unfinished generic (usually urban) shooter (with or without parkour) that will also expect me to subscribe to additional DLC just so the profiteering and evil games company can hold me to ransom over actually finishing the game to some degree within 18 months of me buying it. That's the difference.

For me 720p alone is enough. I have a 28 inch monitor and I play games from my bed, I'm a good 6 feet away from it. 1080p looks pretty much the same at that distance. Also, if I have my desktop at 1080p, everything on the screen is too small to see well.

The gt1030 isn't a gaming card. Although its good for a home theatre/media PC setup in a small form factor case and you need a low profile single slot card capable of hardware decoding.
@kelownatechkid2 жыл бұрын
The drivers that have NIS are also lacking the previous sharpening features though :/ I disagree that this offers 'more choice' since it literally ...doesn't.
