SATA SSDs, NVMe SSDs, and HDDs are all types of storage devices commonly used in computers and other electronic devices. They differ in terms of technology, performance, and use cases. Let me explain each of them:
1. **SATA SSD (Solid-State Drive)**:
SATA SSDs are a type of storage device that uses the Serial ATA (SATA) interface to connect to a computer's motherboard. They are a faster and more reliable alternative to traditional Hard Disk Drives (HDDs). SATA SSDs use NAND flash memory to store data, which is a type of non-volatile memory that retains data even when power is removed. Because of this, they provide significantly faster read and write speeds compared to HDDs. SATA SSDs are a good choice for general computing tasks, including operating system installation, software loading, and basic productivity applications.
Advantages of SATA SSDs:
Faster performance compared to HDDs.
Lower power consumption and heat generation.
Silent operation due to absence of moving parts.
Disadvantages of SATA SSDs:
Slower compared to NVMe SSDs, especially for intense workloads.
Limited by the SATA interface's bandwidth.
2. **NVMe SSD (Non-Volatile Memory Express Solid-State Drive)**:
NVMe SSDs are a newer generation of solid-state drives that use the NVMe protocol to connect to the computer's motherboard. Unlike SATA SSDs, which use the older and slower AHCI protocol, NVMe SSDs leverage the high-speed capabilities of PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) slots. This results in significantly faster data transfer speeds and reduced latency compared to SATA SSDs. NVMe SSDs are well-suited for tasks that require high-speed data access, such as video editing, 3D rendering, and gaming.
Advantages of NVMe SSDs:
Exceptionally high read and write speeds, ideal for data-intensive tasks.
Lower latency due to the efficient NVMe protocol.
Can take advantage of PCIe lanes for even greater speed.
Disadvantages of NVMe SSDs:
Generally more expensive than SATA SSDs.
Higher power consumption compared to SATA SSDs (though still lower than HDDs).
Overkill for basic tasks that don't require high-speed data access.
3. **HDD (Hard Disk Drive)**:
HDDs are the traditional storage devices that have been used for decades. They use spinning disks (platters) coated with a magnetic material to store data. A read/write head accesses the data by moving over the spinning platters. HDDs are slower compared to SSDs due to the mechanical nature of their operation. They are still commonly used for mass storage and archival purposes due to their relatively lower cost per gigabyte compared to SSDs.
Advantages of HDDs:
Larger storage capacities at a more affordable price.
Suitable for storing large files, media, and backups.
Established technology with a long history of use.
Disadvantages of HDDs:
Slower read and write speeds compared to SSDs.
More susceptible to physical shock and damage due to moving parts.
Increased power consumption and heat generation compared to SSDs.
In summary, SATA SSDs, NVMe SSDs, and HDDs all serve different purposes based on their performance characteristics and use cases. SATA and NVMe SSDs offer faster speeds and reliability, while HDDs provide cost-effective mass storage. The choice between them depends on your specific needs, budget, and the performance requirements of your tasks.

HDD are even worst than Sata SSD. Sata SSD & NVMe are at same speed only on old PC's, because old pc itself can't work at higher speeds. But In 2025 Sata SSD are also worst in speeds. Sata(iii) have just 600MB/s & NVMe gen 5 have 14000MB/s which is extremely lot faster. In real world that would work like (12000/13000)MB/s.!. Way faster than traditional Sata SSD. If Sata SSD boot in 10s, the NVMe(5) will boot in 1s. Also this applies in all processes including App Opening. [Ofc the CPU should support the maximum speed].

The reason is that the nvme has super fast sequential read/write for large files, but for random read/write on small files even the nvme drives drop down to below sata speeds (600MB/S). Booting windows is mostly accessing many small files instead of few large ones so it makes sense that the nvme and the sata ssd have similar boot times. A sata drive with very fast random 4k reads would probably feel snappier than an nvme with "slow" random 4k reads. HDD is just happy to be involved

There is a problem in the BIOS because it first loads the BIOS and only then Windows. The BIOS is loading independently of the disk. If the BIOS takes, for example, 20 seconds to load and Windows takes 10 seconds, then it adds up to 30 seconds. It doesn't matter what kind of disk is used; the BIOS will still take 20 seconds to load.

I use Linux and FreeBSD. Both boot insanely quickly, unlike my Windows work stations or roommate's laptop. So I don't really see any speed increase there. The real speed difference is when I start copying files. On my WD Black HDD, I know to go do something while copying files. On my SSD it's quick, but not NVMe holy shit it's already done? Quick. But I still use HDD for full isos and movies because I can load the drives to the brim and not break them. I try not to use more than half of an NVMe or SSD. Or do any strenuous I/O on it like compiling programs.
