I think you missed what might be arguably the biggest controversy of 1912 (which stll haunts us today because the IOC has not changed the ruling), the stripping of Gold Medals from Jim Thorpe, whose unprecdented wins in the decathlon and pentathlon resulted in King Gustaf's declaration of his being the "greatest athlete in the world." Your mention of political meddling, I would argue, is no more evidenced from a European prejudice against an American Indian.
