You have to look at the MC as a self sustained army. All they need is the navy to bring them to where they have to go and provide corpsman to care for the wounded. They deploy MAGTFs and they are the force that goes in on a moments notice when there is a crisis in the world within 72 hrs. They have their own fighter jets, bombers, and infantry. You are thinking of the old corps if you only think the marines are for amphibious landings.

I knew three boys that were getting out of school looking for a place in the Marines just last year, two of them got into some legal trouble, I think one still went on (didn't make it.) Other came back and finished his senior year, and the other couldn't make it, not enough will. Standards are being raised, and I'm ecstatic to hear so.

I don't think the downsizing will hurt your chance to enlist. It just means that they are going to be even more picky on who they will let into the marine corps unlike when I joined when they let anyone in cause of the surge. Just stay out of trouble, don't get any tattoos and score high on the ASVAB and you will be accepted. My advice is not to go enlisted route, go officer route.

I had no problem getting in. I enlisted about 2 weeks ago & Im still in high school... My shipdate is July 14, 2014. & My MOS is 0811(field artillery)

The white crew-neck or the V-neck undershirt is authorized with male service and dress uniforms at the individual's option. Whether an undershirt is worn is at the individual's option except that the crew-neck undershirt will be worn when required by the commander at such times when uniformity is considered essential such as at formations, ceremonies, or parades.

You are right, in Iraq and Afghanistan they played the same role but if you do a little bit of research you would see that USMC generals have complained about this. Marines aren't suppose to be playing out the role they are playing out today. That role is meant for the Army. To hold and defend. That is the reason why the U.S. Army has a larger number of personnel compared to the Marine Corps. That large number is to hold and defend. The Marines are meant for speedy deployment of forces.

REAL men, don't stay home. the USMC goes through shit it happens. and changes can be made as has been to make things happen and change and change back. It's also tougher to get into the USMC today then it was in the last 50 years mostly due to education. only 1% of GED's make it in everyone needs college or High school. 50 years ago. you didn't even need a GED.

i agree, the marine corps always needs the pvts - sgts because they are the ones that frequently depart the corps. Before I EAS'ed they were already not letting people put packages in for OCS or MSG or other billets because of things such as tattoos that were grandfathered in. Don't forget. Those 30k re-enlistment bonuses will definitely be going away. definitely no more 63k re-enlistment bonuses for EOD.

How does the downsize affect new soldiers coming out of basic training or highschool kids that are coming up in a few years ( hence me) what will happen to us will we be cut because we are brand new???

Dude anything traveling along on ground or the surface of the water can be shot by missiles instantly. Even paratrooper transport aircraft are extremely vulnerable.

They are already getting more picky when it comes to recruiting and being accepted. Do good in school, don't get in any legal trouble what-so-ever, and be physically fit. Just maintain being a model citizen and you should be fine. They are going to begin placing Marines on boats in the oceans around the world and taking them off of the land. Therefore, we(U.S.) will not need as many Marines. But it will still be possible to get in, just a little more picky.

Well you have your own opinion. Many who serve have the same opinion as you but the reason why military personnel are a special breed is because they are willing to serve the country whether for a right or wrong reason, whether smart or stupid causes because it is their job they swore an oath to do. They do it all also getting paid a salary that is below the poverty level. When shit hits the fan, the cause for all of it goes out the window, all that matters is the guy on the right and left.

@ aphellix, Sorry I have to disagree with you with the statement of retention of top-heavy force. I for one and many other to Sgts in my MOS was involuntarily separated. I know a GySgt who got axed with 20mo to 20yr retirement. When other Marines hear of my story they know of other who was in my and the Gy situation. Thank GOD I had a outstanding CO. 20yrs later I'm sitting at the same desk doing the same job that I was using when I got axed.

It isn't just jump on a jet and get where you need to go. I've deployed many times so just getting 200 people and their gear to one location on short notice is a science. Airborne troops do not have a full complement of support. They rely on the air force for air support. MAGTFs and MEUs are what the Marines do and always do. Your Navy/USCG analogy can also be used in the argument of Army or Marines. Army=defense of strategic areas. Marines=force projection with full complement of forces.

You have to understand that jarheads adore the corps. Not to bash you or anything but you do have to understand that their are specific purposes of each branch. There is a reason why the Marine Corps is a AF, Navy, and Army combined into one. With your argument I could say let's get rid of the coast guard and make the navy do it. But the sole purpose of the USCG is to protect our shores.

Dying for stupid and evil causes is a stupid thing. But turning your back on your country when you are in uniform is betraying your country, whether for a right, wrong, just, godly, whatever reason. The fact is when you are called to go to war, you go, even if you disagree. You have no choice. Everyone deserves better than what they have ("the pursuit of happiness"), service or no service. That is the American way which is protected and acheived by the armed forces.

Pretty much ruined mine. Or atleast delayed it. Not only are they barely taking people, but theyre not giving any waivers so I'm basically fucked. Very disheartening because all I want is the opportunity to earn it. I want to, go over seas, I want do it as a career. But instead, everyone and their grandmother is joining the military because of the economy, which basically leaves people who actually want to be in the Marines and protect people over seas and serve their country hung out to dry....

enjoy the muddy winter sandpits. If you get into 1st or 2nd battalion you probably wont see them much. If you are a woman then 4th battalion but if you are a woman be prepared to have to go through a lot more stringent standards because female DIs want you to out perform the male battalions. Enjoy your time there, it's hell going through it but after you graduate and a few years later you'll miss it. Have fun telling those "back in bootcamp" stories. FYI.. It just screams "I'm a boot"

i totally agree they should look professional. but the style seems so outdated and extreme, it almost looks like a costume from an old movie - difficult to take seriously. look at it this way... if the current generation redesigned uniforms from scratch, there is no way they would look anything like this - the entire appearance are design no-no's (which must have seemed like improvements to the generations who preceded them). just sayin'.
