30 years ago on the Salmon River in Pulaski NY I was fishing just before dusk. A young boy ,maybe 12 came down and started snagging salmon and tossing them in the bushes. It was cold,late season,.kid in water in jeans and sneakers,no waders or boots. He saw me watching him and told me his father was dead. Nobody in the house was old enough to work,his mom looked after his 3 younger brothers and sisters. He said they got welfare and it barely covered rent,utility bills,not much left over for groceries. He said they needed the fish to get thru the winter. I wished him luck and let him be.

To answer your question about whether you should keep a foul hooked salmon...I'm also in the PNW and I think it really depends on a lot of factors. First and foremost, if your snagging on purpose with a bare line and hook; you're wrong. However if you're running like a buzz bomb or other proper salmon gear and foul snag as happenstance...release if possible; keep if it's going to die. Just my thought.

@LunaGuldeira4 жыл бұрын
hotudk I agree to an extent, but if you need something to survive, then you’re going to get it by one means or another. Snagging is perfectly okay where I used to live (I live in the states, used to live in a mountain range in the mid/southwest part of the US) because it wasn’t possible to get everything you needed from what you were paid. We would make use of everything we got, but if it was for fun (like I do now) I never try to injure the fish. I use barbless hooks, catch and release (unless invasive), etc. so I get you, but it’s not like all of the US are irresponsible towards stuff like that.
@austinbennett61664 жыл бұрын
If it’s against the law it’s against the law. Is it ok for people to rob a grocery store if it’s “for survival”? Nice try dude.
@LunaGuldeira4 жыл бұрын
Austin Bennett Where did you get that it was against the law? Where I used to live, again not speaking for anyone else, it was legal. Another thing, it’s never okay to rob anything from places. That is putting someone else into harms way by making them lose money and stuff of the sort. However, if you are living off the land, like what was said, then you aren’t affecting anyone else. You have to do it in moderation of course, but you get my point. Legality was never related, and you can’t speak for everyone when it concerns laws about stuff like that. There can be exceptions when it comes to laws when it’s concerning the survival of a person, so that’s not a great argument to make.

Just found your channel and love what your doing. I’m from the Olympia area and have fished the Sound for years. I’m just getting back in to fishing and ordered a new kayak yesterday. I was recently fishing for bass at a lake and I was using a crankbait. A steelhead that was 10 pounds 9 ounces got snagged on my bait in the tail and I did not have the proper equipment to land it so I fought it for a half hour and when I tried to release it the fish went belly up because it was too tired from the fight. So I kept it... was that the right thing to do?

I've been that guy. I saw for people fishing the cedar river during the salmon run in winter using power bait and worms with two hooks. I don't know why it feels so bad being that guy but it was actually the right thing to do. The guy picked up a big rock randomly and I started l laughing. Kinda like how that guy just randomly threw that comment about sucking your head underwater. Funny how they get mad like that but they know they're wrong. Anyways we'll leave it at that. If keeping to eat I can't guess as to what the problem would be. I do know the fishing community can be incredibly incredibly toxic. I don't like catch and release to start but snagging and realesing deserves a smack in the chops.

You made the right call years ago when I still lived in Washington I was fishing north beach by deception pass bridge from shore for pinks and I accidentally snagged one right in the butthole lol but as soon as I got the fish on shore and realized it was snagged it was immediately released. If this guy you caught on camera and confronted was acting that with all those people around I'm quite certain he would have kept his snagged fish.
@duckwacker87205 жыл бұрын
Actually Adam you can keep foul hooked fish in salt water. You cannot intentionally snag or attempt to snag, but if you're fishing and foul hook one it's legal. We foul hook fish when we're trolling.

I fish for sea trout on the fly in the dark and there are times where to get back out on to the bank I’ve turned my head torch on, and I’ve seen some huge fish, salmon as well hugging a rock. I can see how snagging fish at night has been used by poachers as the fish are like rabbits in the headlights. Still even after a fishless week on the fly it’s never once crossed my mind to do this, not just because it’s illegal but because it’s unsporting and these magnificent fish deserve better.

This is how they legally fish for paddlefish on the Missouri River….🤷♂️ 3 point or better, spike only, don’t shoot turkey on the fly, don’t shoot geese and ducks on the ground or water, cannot use crossbows in bow season, can’t use 209 shotgun primers in muzzleloader, barbless hooks only, cannot use non expanding broad heads, cannot spot light varmints during big game season, cannot use electronic callers for turkey, on and on and on….. might as well take a lawyer with you into the woods.

Nice on the bare hook! Its like that on the upper Rogue, i hate salmon season up here, they put a piece of yarn on the hook and its bait?? Its basically a bare hook, thing is %99 of all salmon up here are snagged. There are the occasional fish that will be hooked in the mouth but chances are they are hooked from the outside in, wich technoly they are snagged. If any of you have done any sockeye fishing in Alaska you know what im talking about, instead of calling it snagging they call it lining.
