Very interesting story behind those B&H commercials. I remember this was accompanied by an inspirational orchestral piece, quite stunning for being a tobacco commercial.

RA&A stuff seemed to have a special tone and stimmung to it. Can You Feel It by the Jacksons, had a wonderful video made by them, with the incomparable Ken Nordine doing the intro speak. *That* to me epitomizes the feel of their stuff. And it was all done with optical compositing effects as far as I can see. Hajime Sorayamas work was of course the inspiration for the Sexy robot, was he ever directly involved?

Doing a research project on John Whittney, Con Pederson, and Robert Abel. This video was so informative and a huge help, thank you for sharing your insight!

I remember seeing a couple of those Benson & Hedges ads on Malaysian TV. Technically, cigarette advertising had already been banned by then. You’ll notice that, while the company name is prominent, there is no actual mention of what products they might make. Other cigarette companies broadcast ads in the guise of travel agencies. Yup, the good old regulatory nudge-nudge-wink-wink was alive and well ...

Really interesting! Thanks for the video. Do you know a source where you learn more about the techniques?

There is another place where clips from the Robert Able canned food ad can be seen. For a few frames in Back to the Future II in the scene with the flat screen television showing picture in a picture programming parts of the ad can be seen. I assume most people never notice it because some of the other clips shown in scene can be quite distracting. Even in a documentary about the Back to the Future movies a person who worked on Back to the Future said that no 3D Cgi was used in Back to the Future movies. The clips of the Robert Able canned food ad in the movie make that claim irrelevant my opinion.

I bet. Reminded an animated film from Wes Archer was also seen in that scene (Jac Mac & Rad Boy GO!).

There is plenty of CG used, only not as an integral special effect. A good memorable example is the holographic shark in II.

Helge Frisenette You are right. I forgot about that. I also just remembered that the clips from the ad can be seen in Odyssey Production's "Mind's Eye" series of videos.

Thanks for all the discussion, guys! Sorry for the excess black at the end of this one. You can see the PowerCat spot and another one in the same series, both *with* audio, at kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJWloH6FpcinppY Helge, I don't know how much credit Bob Abel gave to Sorayama. Sorayama's own website doesn't cite any exhibitions earlier than 1988, and this was done in 1984-1985, so it's possible they developed independently. More research is needed to answer that one. Thanks! Please share this channel with friends!

Ed Kramer - CGI History Expert Wizard Well his Sexy Robot book was out in 83 with copyright on pictures going further back. Creative people in the US and elsewhere where of course very aware of the treasure trove of inspiration of Japanese pop culture going way back. While there is a certain charm to having this channel to a small audience, it’s perplexing and unfair that it hasn’t exploded yet. You should have at least thousands of subs by now, all things considered. Have you considered posting stills and short clips (tape and raster artifacts would only be beneficial) to various 80’s hashtags on Instagram? Stuff like #vaporwave #outrunvisuals #synthwave etc. and then put a link and subscription reminder to this channel in the profile.

Thats a great idea, and yes I'm also wondering why there aren't more subscribers! I also instagram at edkramer_wizard but have not posted in quite a while. As I get further into making my documentary "The Wizards of Hollywood" featuring interviews with many of the artists I name in these pieces, I will start trying to enlarge my following and any suggestions are welcome. I don't have a team, its just me and I also have a full time job teaching CGI at the college level. FYI, I make these videos the day I post them. This quarter I teach until 18:00 on Thursdays then come home and make the videos. Thats why they are now appearing later than they used to. Thanks for bringing such intelligent commentary to the channel, Helge! I hope to meet you some day!
