Israel didn't divvy that land - the UN did, at the time a coalition of 60 nations. They looked at existing property maps and they voted to split it based on those lines. Israel agreed to the terms, the Gazans didn't.

Resolution 242 is not International Law and the U.N has no ability to make legal judgements whatsoever. Under the British Mandate it only mentioned he Jews should form a national home which recognised their historical connection to the land. There was no mention of Arabs forming an Arab state anywhere as that had already occurred in Jordan which is the State for the Arab Palestinians. From West of the Jordan River to the Mediterranean sea was the Mandated area for the Jewish Sate. Resolution 181 was devised later to create an Arab state inside of what was to be greater Israel. The Jews accepted it the Arabs didn't and the rest is history. International law actually states that the entity who declares Independence (Israel in this case) will assume all sovereign boundaries of the former legal owner. That former owner was the British Mandate and borders from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean sea, including Gaza. So because Israel was the only entity to claim independence and which has been formerly recognised as such they have sovereignty under international law of all the former British Mandate and its boundaries including the West Bank and Gaza. You also cant' occupy something you already own. So until then the lands are disputed but certainly favour Israel in International law and the Arabs and the U.N know it. Otherwise, it would have been resolved decades ago.
