Without the dowry the groom's side would've been left with nothing. Even if the "refund" was paid in full the guy and his family was still hurt. If you ask me it's a matter of principle more than anything.

And Jesus Christ! 10k+ is the average bridal endowment fee for traditional Viet and Chinese families (and even higher if the family is famous). I hope that most Asian cultures step away from bridal endowment fee like the West have done with the dowry practices that was commonly practiced before the 1900s.

I think there can be a misconception of how you want to interpret the bride endowment. I truly believe it’s not consider it selling off your daughter but gaining a son and your son in law showing appreciation for you raising his wife. I have 3 girls and my daughter is married out of raise her husband gave us a monetary gift as a Thank you for raising her for him. We didn’t ask him but it was a sign as respect. Every parent has their opinion on how they want to broach the subject..

It's a matter of perspective and expectation. They only seemed worse because of your expectation. I'd say Hmong people have become more westernized or modernized, but I wouldn't necessarily say one is worse than the other.
