@GirLuffer I've been criticised elsewhere for using what has been described as a monotone, but 'emotionless' is exactly the effect I am looking for. I love reading HPL out loud and that's how I interpret this kind of story. Thanks for listening :o)
@IulianusTabernarius11 жыл бұрын
Nyarlathotep is easily my favorite lovcraftian deity, an ageless shape shifting Pharaoh incarnation of chaos who brings with him knowledge that drives all insane, whereas others in the mythos are beyond human, beyond human concerns, and beyond comprehension Nyarlathotep waxes diabolical, he comes in the form of a man, and he comes with a message for man, and that message destroys men. We fear Cthulhu and azathoth for their form, we fear nyarlathotep for his nature.

Nyarlathotep has some pretty scary, sanity-demolishing forms in his repertoire - The God of the Bloody Tongue, The Haunter of the Dark, The Bloated Woman, The Dark Demon, and others. He just likes to appear human because he enjoys toying with us.

Your voice is amazing - the "emotionless" sound gives it a serious, yet creepy vibe. Nice job!
@reptomicus13 жыл бұрын
What I like about this story is that it seems almost like an epilogue to his mythos stories. The mythos in his other stories( like Call of Cthulhu, Dunwich, etc.) sort of has rumblings that the end is sort of inching slowly toward us, but here the end has been blown wide open in a gaping abyss and is swallowing us up even as the narrator tells the story. In making a Lovecraft anthology, I'd stick this story at the end of the book.

@NullspaceNomad It's something I've thought about but it's very hard work and I'm a very lazy person! I also make a lot of mistakes when I'm reading out loud - the editing involved is horrendous, so doing that kind of work for someone else wouldn't be very productive. However if I find a way of overcoming all these obstacles I'll definitely be up for it. Thanks for your comment.

You have an exceptional gift for reading and narrating. I am however, somewhat distraught that despite H.P. Lovecraft's fame, I find his works so incredibly pretentious that reading them myself is almost painful. Thanks.
@omaralmeyda9428 жыл бұрын
+DancerVeiled I loath to agree. But "pretentious" hits the nail right on the head. Reminds me of everything I envision Victorian era pseudo-aristocracy to be. I know not why. Its amazing, and very creative. But it does seem almost smug in a way. Quite the observation there. I will have to agree.
@tenhirankei8 жыл бұрын
It seems at times while he wrote he thought to himself, "I am more intelligent than the drooling mass of humanity. I dare them to try to understand my brilliance which will blind their eyes." It is fortunate for him that he contained this often enough to manage to be popular among "the drooling mass". Otherwise his would be a sad footnote in literary history.
@tenhirankei8 жыл бұрын
Maybe the problem with it is in its brevity. Lovecraft tried to cram so much into something so short that it comes out as a "tongue-twister" for the mind. (Did I say that right?)
@unrulycrow62998 жыл бұрын
DancerVeiled While I agree with you (no matter how much it annoys me haha), I must say that his writing style in itself is at least less pretentious than R. Scott Bakker (The Prince of Nothing/The Aspect-Emperor series). I mean. I really like Bakker's lore but I find his writing style both awesome and on a new level of intellectual masturbation (basically, a love/hate relationship with this guy's work). On the other hand, I appreciate very much that Lovecraft decided to go to the point in his stories.

Visitormassacre I don’t either, On the other hand J.R.R Tolkien at times grates on me unlike any other writer when it comes to sanctimoniousness and pomposity at times even though I do respect his Hobbi book and LOTR trilogy.

@soulhunter59 This is, in my opinion, is Lovecraft's most horific story by far. It is also one of his best pieces of writing; I feel his ideas are better than his somewhat ponderous writing a lot of the time, but not here. It's short and sweet and not too overblown with adjective. There is not enough scope in KZbin comments to adequately discuss the story but if you PM me I will be happy to, when I have some free time to do so (it could be a while before I respond, which i apologize for).
@soulhunter5913 жыл бұрын
So what is Nyarlathotep brainwashing the people in the room turning them into his followers? Are they seeing things that have not yet happened but see the world what it will be? Are the flutes sirens when a city is being attacked? Is the city he is in devastated by war? I read Lovecraft when I'm asked to but when it comes time to discuss the work the people who told me to read it can't seem to talk about it. Come on guys let's talk about why it's scary?
@antwan13578 жыл бұрын
I discovered that hp lovecraft seems to purposefully leave certain well placed things up for the reader to interpret for themselves so you get two people who can read the same book and each will have what they think is the scarier idea ,but in a way creates problems for fact fanatics , but the casual reader delights more from the smoother transition to the mind while unburdened with major facts and just enjoys sentence to sentence the methodical poetic scare.

I'll have to check on that, Cthulhu was chief among the old ones, but those are below the Elder gods. So things like Yog Sothoth and of course Azathoth are stronger. Not sure about the general Old One population, or those in the expanded material. Thinking about it, it might just be most of the higher ups just arn't named only described.
@littlemrpinkness2956 жыл бұрын
Lovecraft has a tendancy to get carried away with himself. This one started out great and was going along just fine, then he got overwrought and it turned abstract and ridiculous. He had me good and creeped out and then messed up and I was just giggling. It's like he just doesn't know when to stop and leave it alone.
@cha56 жыл бұрын
Heh, For me that's a complaint I have about J.R.R. Tolkien more often than not when it comes to sanctimonious purple prose, which for me grates far more than anything I've ever found in Lovecraft's works. I always find Nyarlathotep to be an almost poetic work of Lovecraft's, especially since it was a nightmare he had involving HIM that gave us Yogsothery in the first place.

Not American, thats the main problem I guess, seems that in America there is a shop for everything and anything over here you can be lucky if you find what you are looking for, and have to remember well what you saw in the shop so that if you ever need it you know thats basically the only shop that sells the specific item in a large area. Its pretty annoying well at some point somebody will swap every page online at any rate, its just a waiting game.
