New York City may now be even less of a "great place" to settle down and raise a fam, for more reasons than one...

It's on purpose because of Greed and Corruption. The whole real estate market is almost literally a ponzi scheme. Who would like to expose a ponzi scheme. Plus it's speculated that a lot of stores there or a lot of real estate is left literally for decades unrented, and that's speculated that it's because they're laundering money. There's a lot of dirt about NYC and its real estate, corruption and greed or how badly they manage their work & middle class. Louis Rossmann are one of the people that have reported about the topic and have made almost a series of documentaries about how ridiculous the real estate in NYC is. He had a business there for more than a decade after all and he's a New Yorker. He knows more than most people.

I came to Ny in 2000 from Poland. Back then NY felt like home. I had late shifts in a restaurant going home from Manhattan to Brooklyn at 1 or 2 am and never felt threatened. My weekly salary was enough to pay all bills, food and entertainment. I worked for an immigrant from Equator he tried to pimp me, luckily a couple of great American customers helped me to get out that situation and get a much better job. That being said, whoever runs this theater hates American and Americans. They are taking advantage of good hearted nation and patriots. They are destroying this country from the inside. After 22 years living in Brooklyn and seeing the borough to change for worse I move to Long Island and now thinking to move back to Europe. Americans! Fight and Stay strong you have only one country, you have nowhere to go!

True - I’m in the U.K. and our wealth inequality is second only to Bulgaria in Europe. I’m happy to hear Poland is thriving after a terrible and bloody history of poverty like most of Eastern Europe. After 22 years of paying taxes here in the U.K. we wouldn’t blame any immigrant for leaving - most of the Polish workers left in droves years ago (and long before the very shady Brexit,) when working conditions became untenable, and the majority of us didn’t blame them one bit for getting out of here. London and New York sound very similar inasmuch as what makes both places great - different cultures which have been established there for generations and the original native New Yorkers (or Cockneys in the case of London,) are all leaving a place that is in their blood, while rich oligarchs and business people buy up all the property and probably stay there 2 nights a year. All as a result of the gentrification and social cleansing that began in the 80s. If working class or migrant workers “stayed to fight” to live in London they’d be living on the streets like so many others who ultimately end up dying or getting moved on. Without money or influence I don’t see what anyone with an ordinary income/background can do. I’m very sad for NY though. Its working class people and diverse communities are clearly integral to what makes it the place it is.

*I was born and raised in NYC, and fled for good in 1983. When it became safe (for a brief respite - it seems NY doesn't like anything but high crime, rent, food, and no future prospects), I visited a few times, but it was obvious that the underlying issue - blatant, **_rampant_** government corruption - was still in obvious control. I will never even visit NYC again. They can keep it! I've lived in the Midwest for 40-odd years now, and cannot believe I didn't move sooner. I can defend myself (which is and has **_always_** been illegal in NYC!) with my Constitutional Carry firearm, I can get any job I'm qualified for, and my State doesn't spend it's time planning my demise. If we split this we will have a system like pa where I will split 50/50 so no this is not to turn the state red but it is to make another state of common sense and cooperation which it needs for people out side of city and places outside of lower state to survive. This. What they do is they say prices wont go up "again" while they permit buying power to climb..... but only back up to the roughly 7 & 1/2 dollars that it's been for nearly the entirety of the last 50+ years (there was that one time in 2008 where it went to 9+). BUYING POWER is what they're controlling. They can raise wages all they want. If during your entire life, minimum wage only buys 7 bucks of goods, then you haven't gotten a wage increase. We are STAGFLATING as AI/Automation is keeping unemployment high while rates are also high and buying power is so low.

Recently, a New York City "influencer" who was allegedly one of the women punched in the face stated in a video that she felt that getting punched in the face is like a rite of passage for being a New Yorker and that she was not going to let the experience make her move from New York. These are the people who vote for the policies that make NYC what it is today. Ultimately, that is why New York City is so horrible.
@DoomFinger511

What a stupid thing for her to say. I lived in NYC for 20 years (moved out last month) and never in my life got punched, attacked, or threatened. The only right of passage is maybe having a homeless person ask you for money.
@trident2020
@trident2020 2 ай бұрын
That "influencer" is absolutely crazy, she has to be. To think that she considers being sucker punched in the face by a stranger is a rite of passage to live in NYC is be totally nuts! I was born and raised in New York (Bronx to be exact) and never experienced anything even close to that while I was growing up, attended public schools, worked in Midtown Manhattan and used the subways daily. I enjoyed roaming around the city on Saturdays going to restaurants, to the movies, museums, old record stores & used book stores back when the city had tons of used book and vinyl record stores to explore. That was in the 1960s-mid 1990s. I moved out in 1996 because I couldn't afford living there anymore as a single person who didn't want to live with roommates. I'm much happier where I am now and don't regret leaving NYC, especially as it exists now. That dumb lady influencer is part of the problem. People like her are willing to tolerate horrible rampant crime even when she becomes a victim of it, and voting in corrupt politicians who continue to downplay and ignore the dangers of living in the big city. She calls it a rite of passage...well I wish her luck, she's gonna need lots of it. Me...life is too short and there are plenty of other places to live and be safe in and enjoy life. New York has long ago ceased being such a place.

We recently moved to NYC from another city and our cost of living literally tripled over night. Rent, childcare, groceries - everything here is insane. The cost of childcare for 1 toddler in our neighborhood is ~$3,500 - $8,000 a month (at the low end is is a normal daycare and at the high end, is for a private preschool + nanny). Our neighborhood bodega charges $5 for one (1) avocado and $15 for a half gallon of milk and a half dozen eggs.

You nailed it. Corruption is a festering problem. People on both sides just don't see the other side's point of view, and do things in a certain way because that's just how you do it. It's logical, right? But it isn't logical, because you can't see the other point of view, so open up big gaping holes that cause major problems in the long term. Look at resource and industry rich Louisana on the Republican side, and New York and California on the Democrat side. Many problems. Better to be a state that flip flops (has balance), or one that prioritizes policies that are traditionally the opposite side, while implementing them in your own way. A great example of that is actually up in Canada - Alberta. It's a Conservative (right-leaning) stronghold, highly values the trades and industry, but also loves to get things done for the people. Edmonton and Calgary are top rated cities in Canada. Amazing transit networks, booming construction leading to affordable housing, great universities, best in class healthcare in Canada, some of the best crime and traffic accident safety, etc; back in 2013 Edmonton ditched their parking requirements and opened up zoning, and they've had a flood of duplexes and densifying that have not led to any degradation in the community. They permit stuff in 90 days there - so efficient. People thought two single family homes being replaced by a 4 story apartment building would destroy their community, but instead it's bringing in new families that can't afford the other provinces, and revitalizing areas. Now that locals have experienced it, they like not having a huge bureaucratic mess. It's a breath of fresh air when you're just trying to live life.

I remember telling some New Yorkers before, I know NY is a beautiful state & city but for the same $5000 a month you can go almost anywhere else except a few states or city’s and get more bang for your buck, for example certain areas & suburbs of Chicago Illinois you can find to be quite luxurious for $5,000 a month, Atlanta, Texas, Arizona, Mississippi, Arkansas, Nevada, North Carolina and more all have areas/ Cities/ suburbs…that for $3000 a month you can rent a house 3-4 bdrm with 2000+ sq ft, or pay a $2800 (or more) monthly mortgage and get more sq ft for your money.

I’m in mn. Our rent is approximately 25% of our take home pay, and childcare for 1 kids is another 25%. This is all done by design. If the government wanted people to grow their own families they would create laws that incentivized workers (to have a family) and employers to have workers with families. They’d rather ship in uneducated, poor people to do their landscaping and fast food jobs than create laws that benefit the citizens. Again, it’s not an accident, it’s by design.

Since 2000 the city has been wanting ONLY TRANSIENT PEOPLE. This is not new or news to anyone who lives here. They want people who stay 2-3 years and leave. This keeps apartment prices soaring and no one really voting or having a vested interest in life here. That's great for politicians who don't WANT to have to answer to ANYONE but themselves. Financially it's great for them. Tenants right groups, for example, are told you need community and a GROUP to fight the system. Whether you agree with the whole tenants rights issue or not doesn't matter - it just shows what the upside for them is in creating a transient way of life where no one has any power or say in their neighborhoods. This is how they want it to be all over America - "you will own nothing and be happy."

Parents said, go, go. Teachers thought it was normal. I walk alone after school, cooked myself and egg on a toasted bread sandwich. Washed it down with wine or beer. Nobody home. No activity to go to.

(To be fair, it’s almost never bad coffee). You can spend a lot easily, but you can also eat on a budget there for sure. I got a whole platter of chicken shawarma the other day for $10 and it was enough for 2 days. But I could also go to a place where a pasta is $30. Just gotta be smart, but it is very expensive.

Born, raised & educated in NY metro public schools & SUNY. After working for a year in my professional field, I moved to the mid-west for better opportunities. SPLIT NY✊✊!! If we split this we will have a system like pa where I will split 50/50 so no this is not to turn the state red but it is to make another state of common sense and cooperation which it needs for people out side of city and places outside of lower state to survive.
