The housing prices are ridiculous. Our neighborhood stores are being replaced with boring characterless stores. The crime rate is high and increasing. The city planning geniuses took away traffic lanes to make sidewalk seating and created more congestion. The mayor seems to care more about his sponsors and seems to have forgotten he was elected. People litter a lot and don't clean their dog poo. Rats and roaches run the city (the eco-friendly rodent repellents don't work). I saw rats chase a woman down a street. They looked like little chihuahuas. I could write so much more. de Blasio messed up and I don't have hope with this corporate mayor. Greed has ruined the city.

Peoples rent have gone up so astronomically high that they have no choice but to leave elsewhere. I fear I may never be able to afford to rent a place anywhere in the city. That was truly a night from hell. And because of the bad weather that day, a bunch of buses and trains were delayed, so at least 100 of us were just curled up on the floor of the lobby of Port Authority on Christmas Eve, looking like refugees, with security guards standing guard over us like it was a prison or something. Too much liberalism. NYC is never on any lists re: best places to live. People in their 20s and 30s going to other states with cheaper rents and taxes. For what we pay in NYC can own a house elsewhere. NYC does not look like a good future bet. $3500 / month rent without roommates -NO. By the way NY has some of the worst laws regarding roommates. A friend of mine in Queens has a roommate turned squatter for over (1) year and still waiting to get her case heard in civil housing court. This guy videotapes her daily calls her a f-- b-- slams doors. It is legal to videotape someone in an apt as long as you don't tape someone in a bathroom or undressed. So for those of you looking for roommates BE CAREFUL You may get stuck with someone who does not pay rent plus harasses you. You cannot illegally evict someone. You will be miserable waiting to go to court plus there is no guarantee you will get them evicted. There is nothing the police can do. Not all states have laws like this. Thumbs up.the t

As a native New Yorker, born and raised, and lived here my entire life, I have to disagree with you. Real New Yorkers have seen and gone through worse. I believe they’re hyping this up to scare residents out and even so to scare tourists. The news isn’t telling you the complete truth. It’s not as bad as the 70s/80s yet. When it gets to that point, I am sure action will be taken. But for now, the city is picking itself up and is safe for the most part, except for some high-crime areas, which to be honest has always been that way. Look up the term "Hell Hole" in the dictionary, it will mention this bus terminal on 42nd in Manhattan. Back in 2008 was on vacation in Manhattan, had to get to the Iron Maiden show in the Meadowlands, found out the bus was the easiest/fastest way to go. We spent 20-30 minutes lost in that bus terminal, ran into countless other Maiden fans lost, looking for the mysterious bus to the meadowlands. Finally saw a few other metal heads go thru this random unmarked set of doors, looked like a set of emergency exit doors that if you went thru it would set off an alarm. No signage anywhere in the terminal. Talked to 2 or 3 uniformed/official looking security guards who thought a bus to the meadowlands for a concert was some sort of fairy tale/myth. Went thru those magical unmarked doors, ended up "outside" in this tunnel with another 200 metal heads queuing, there were like 10-15 big Prevost buses people were getting on. For those who are downplaying the NYC economic downturn and crisis please stop! The city is in shambles. People are not out and about like they were pre- COVID. There was a report on the news less than a week ago about Broadway experiencing financial struggles. Businesses are closed all over the city. Crime is skyrocketing. So far, the Mayor, Eric Adams is not tackling the issue in a way that is aggressive enough to recover the city. He is too soft and weak. NY needs a strong person in leadership. One who is steadfast and very strategic when it comes to implementing plans and policies to move the city in an upward direction. The advocates and activists are constantly protesting every decision that is made to ensure economic recovery. As we already know the cost of living is rising. My question is why would anyone want to pay such high rent in a city where the quality of life is dwindling by the day? I suppose I can see why an investor would do this. People are leaving NYC. There have been reports about enrollment going down in schools in higher income areas of the city. Therefore, those who have the financial means to leave NYC are in fact doing this. They will continue to do this because generally people who have money prefer higher standards of living. I pose this question, what do you think will happen to NYC when the high income earners leave? Yes, this question is for those of the working poor and lower middle class that keep hounding the wealthy and upper middle class to " Pay their fair share" you should think about that question. One cannot institute a millionaires tax on millionaires that have moved their businesses and residences elsewhere. Business feeds politics and political rhetoric and politics feeds the people bullshit. That is why most people do not understand economics. However it is also true that businesses both big and small play an integral part in the life blood of a city. Without businesses there is no tax revenue. Without tax revenue you have a city that will experience a fiscal crisis unlike anything most of us have experienced . I am referring to massive budget cuts. Job loss, lay offs, a welfare/social program crisis, clinics being shut down, cut backs on sanitation, police, parks dept. That means, filthy public parks infested with vermin. Trash not being collected regularly, the unemployed burdening the welfare system and rampant crime. In short, there would be more poor people than rich. Poor people cannot sustain a city. There must a balance of both rich and poor. It's evident that many New Yorkers have their head in the clouds and therefore do not notice the early stages of socioeconomic decline. This has been in the making well before C-19. Again, most people only notice these situations when transitioning into the last stages. Perhaps some of you should look at the history of the once bustling cities of Detroit and Cleveland. Every city has its hey day. NYC had a long one. Nothing lasts forever. You cannot understand the present unless you know how it came to be.

Something is very different about NYC since the pandemic. I’m from here but haven’t lived in this city for many years. I’ve been a visitor/tourist for the last several years so I can give my experience: I stay at the same hotel in midtown (times square area). At one point, I felt fine walking back to my place at 2am… no problems. No issues- plenty of people out and about. In my last trip, someone got shot by a stray bullet in Times Square, several homeless people were attacked, there was a rise of attacks toward Asians, and I think at least 2 people were pushed off the subway platform. Also want to add that I stayed at the Double Tree around the corner from the Port Authority. It’s next door to the Dept of Corrections. Every morning there was a line of felons (ex felons?) checking in for probation. The hotel also served as a homeless shelter (which I found out later), so I guess you can say, I had full immersive experience of being a NYer on that trip.

Not just the pandemic. I think the riots emboldened a certain racial group to take revenge on certain racial groups. The perps and the victims in all of these incidents are almost always the same people.

Funny you should mention it. I stayed at at that Double Tree for a week just a couple weeks ago. Felt really weird because they had this tent in the entrance and at night people would be smoking weed I know it's legal now but it's like a 4star hotel and you are right something about NY has changed especially since covid I am not born here but went to school and has been living in and out of NY from 1999.

Google some info on that particular Double Tree. It serves as a temp shelter for the homeless. Apparently, there’s a program that contracts with hotels to provide shelter for the homeless. This is in major metropolitan areas (not just NYC). So tourists have no idea that certain floors are designated for this. The first night I was there- the police came out because someone was arguing about their voucher and threatened the manager. Fun times.

Crime is getting worse, the subway is getting worse, it's even more financially infeasible to live here than the last time that we said it was financially infeasible to live here. I feel like it's because a lot of people think of NYC as Metropolis (especially landlords) when I find that if you just treat NYC as a city like any other, with just as much Gotham as Metropolis, you'll have a way better view of it. Be on the lookout for deals, keep hustling, look for where your upward mobility is, and learn to keep your costs low and find your bliss. Whatever that might be.

No, NYC actively avoids Port Authority. Same with Penn Station and Times Square. Only go there if you need to. They are terrible places and the last place you want to find yourself. There is nothing fun about any of them, and nothing mall-like about overpriced coffee and rundown deli spots. Times Square is an overpopulated, disneyfied tourist spot for out-of-towners, devoid of all charm, but I still felt the need to include since residents of NYC avoid it just as much.

The disconnect: NYC has lost 5-7% of its population, tens of thousands are working from home outside of the city....yet rents are at an all-time high. Unless the city demolished 10% of its housing stock over the last 2 years, something doesn't compute.

Manhattan has indeed lost 7% of it's population - the highest of any county in the US during the pandemic. Don't confuse price with vacancy - NY passed some pretty onerous rent laws in 2016, limiting rent increases. With demand rising, Landlords are charging all the market can bear, because they know with inflation and taxes skyrocketing, the limits on the annual increases aren't going to be enough, at least for the next couple of years.
