Ever read "Solo" by Anthony Schiano? New York is now the same as it was in the 60s and 70s, for the same damn reason. NYC was then losing 30 patrolmen a year to murder alone. Schiano wrote at the time (1973) that it was a wonder more cops didn't quit in disgust. So thank you for your steadfast service. :)

NY talk show host, Bob Grant, used to advise cops, "Keep the gun in the holster, don't take chances, don't make waves, put in your 20 and get the hell out." And this was 30 years ago. @@shane99ca You’re right. Ask those of us who lived through these times. At least in the 60’s through 80’s, you could defend yourself. Back then, the police looked the other way at the good guys. Now, they ignore the perpetrators. If you’re a cop and you want to stay in the area, try Nassau and Suffolk counties. It’s expensive, but the pay is much better, conditions are much better, the people have more respect, the judges actually enforce the law.

In terms of big cities in the U.S., the crime is relatively low. My friends dad just retired from the NYPD, he said it’s sad what’s happened to the NYPD, people before were doing it cause it was a good career, payed good and wanted to make a difference, maybe even make detective or higher ranks, now 99% of new recruits just do it for the pay check and try to avoid anything related to the job. Which, as he explained, cops like that always existed, but were the minority. But now they are the majority.

I lived in NYC for 2 years between 2008-2010 and the police were some of the friendliest and most down to earth, police officers I have had the pleasure of meeting. And I say this as someone who is not the biggest fan of police in general, due to rampant corruption in other PD’s across the country, but I do have a lot of respect for good officers and PD’s.

I got to live in NYC for a 2 year period between 2008-2010 and it was one of the major highlights of my life honestly. I fell so in love with the city and how there were so many different eclectic areas, each with their own unique vibe, that were all easily accessible via the highly efficient subway system that I viewed as a godsend as someone who had lived their life until then in suburbs where people were completely reliant on driving and the large expansive highways, with not even a bus system, and almost nothing was in walking distance, yet driving scared the 💩 out of me. I was so happy to have such a simple (once you became familiar with it), affordable, and easily accessible mode of transportation. I relied on the subway to get everywhere, and even as a single young woman I never once had a negative or harassing encounter believe it or not. Ofc there was the usual performance artists soliciting donations, and there were still areas I avoided because I knew they would be less than safe for a young woman unfamiliar to them. The police were very chill and helpful, also maybe some of the most friendly (sometimes to the point of being openly flirtatious lol) often asking if I was in need of directions, because I liked to wander around just taking in all the new and awesome surroundings as I explored the variety of neighborhoods, and appeared to be and often did end up, lost. So sad to see the terrible state NYC is now in, compared to the practically magical seeming place it was when I was there, glad I at least got to experience it before it ended up this way.
