I did that to one of my boys. They took a code to a webkinz at a birthday party. I made him turn around and tell the birthday girl what he did. He apologized in person and in writing and had to spend his birthday money on a new webkinz for the birthday girl. He remembers that until this day. He's 23 now, this was when he was 5-6. It was a great learning opportunity.

I'm so glad that Florida has enacted laws that say if a prosecutor or a Judge refuses to prosecute or punish a criminal in accordance to the state laws, they themselves can be charged and removed from their position. Doesn't matter if it's retail theft or a car jacking, if it's a punishable crime with any type of punishment (probation to mandatory jail time) they will be charged and sentenced in accordance with the law. Many have been from places like NY and have a long list of priors but we're let go. There were a few DA's and prosecutors who felt like those in NY, but they have since lost their jobs.

This is nothing new for criminals. I'm a retired LEO, and way back in the 1990s, drug dealers were using kids for various parts of their criminal activities. They paid kids to stand on street corners to lookout for police cars, and in one public housing building, they used kids to bring the money from buyers into the apartment and then carry the package of drugs back to the car. The welfare mom who was supplementing her welfare checks by selling crack from her public housing apartment, thought that by using her kids to move the drugs and money she woukd avoid arrest. She learned that wasn't true.

There have long been criminal rings compromised of family members, there was a notorious one in Spokane when I was growing up. When the police finally raided their “psychic” operation they found tons of stolen valuables.

I'd bet a million dollars that Macys has cut store staff to an absolute minimum to save on overheads. Experienced store staff would notice 'odd families' like these and use their skills and experience to move them on before a theft occurs. In the UK, in my store, if you see someone 'odd' you approach them and give them the full service and full attention. They become so overwhelmed that store staff have their focus on them that they leave within moments.

Unfortunately, this has been going on for decades. I was a FT SAHM when my girls were little so I worked PT at Gap Kids in Cbus Ohio. Very young children were taught to steal, or they stuffed items under the child in their stroller. The employees watched it happen but couldn't do anything. A manager had to see them conceal items and never lose eye contact with them until they left the store. They learned to work in teams so one person could distract the manager. I'll never forget watching a lady walk in and stuff several Easter dresses from a display table in her stroller, and then somewhere in the store she put them in a Gap shopping bag, took them to the counter, and returned them for a merchandise credit so she could purchase the correct sizes. Oh, the memories!

Years ago I also worked in retail. We also would get groups that would cause a scene at 1 side of the store and draw security and staff to them while the rest of the group quietly and quickly robbed the other side. I would always go to the quiet side and continue to ask people if they needed help or ask their children to not make a mess, don't forget their old shoes and bring the box for the new ones to the register etc. This aggravated the thieves but after explaining why I did this to security and management they had no problem with me as long as I always seemed helpful.

So much must change, and I don't know where to start. We keep moving closer and closer to being a full-blown dystopia. How many poor and working poor people who try to live within their means and follow the law to be good citizens are going to suffer MORE from this because the prices go up, businesses close, taxes go up, jobs are lost, and so much more. We could talk for hours about how badly this shoplifting problem spreads through every sector of life, status, and demographic. Everything becomes more difficult. Businesses close and now people have to spend the whole day travelling to go to another store to shop and spend the rest of day travelling to get back home. Now people show up to stores and can't enjoy their shopping experience because there is security gawking at them. Prices go up, salaries go down. As a former retail clothing store manager, I can tell you this has been going on for a very long time. We used to have a mother come in and layer her 7 yr old daughter in clothes and had her wear a coat (which belonged to the mother) out of the store in the winter. And this happened multiple times.
