As someone who grew up on the Brooklyn end of the 2/5 trains, I didn’t really go to the other terminus of the 5 at Dyre Ave. This video was amazing on so many levels, here were some of the highlights for me. For starters, the tunnel section between Beverly Rd and President Street still looks the same as it did 20+ years ago when I used to ride the 2/5 train with my dad to visit his late friend. He’d let me stand in front of him by the railfan window on the Redbirds. To be honest, I’m sure that the Redbirds on the 2/5 are the reason that I fell in love in love with the NYC subway, and trains to begin with. Past that, this train operator handled the Rogers Junction like a PRO. Those crossovers were almost CBTC-level! I was least fascinated by Rogers Junction, and how the different trains connected across different levels. Even though the train transferred to the local track after Atlantic Ave and had to go up the west side of Manhattan, this video highlights one of the things that I love about the NYC Subway. Redundancy. There’s so much redundancy in place, that even if there’s an issue, riders still have at least one option to get to their destination. Oftentimes it’s more like two or more options; even if one of those options involves transferring to or taking a bus. There’s so much that many other cities can learn from the NYC subway system. When it turned away at Borough Hall, the 4 and 5 train exchanged their goodbyes 😂. The section up the west side was pretty quick, just like in the 2 train video, but great nonetheless. It’s almost funny how close Park Place and Chambers Street are. I was a little bit disappointed that I didn’t get to see the 125th street complex from the uptown side, or the famous 149th street curve onto the White Plains Rd line. But, I’ve been here long enough to know that you guys won’t leave us hanging like that. Yet again, thanks for unlocking a childhood memory of mine; and keep doing a GREAT service to the transit community! 🫡

The video quality and station announcements are great. On many videos from other providers you never know where you are and often subways signs are not quite readable. The only drawback from watching at the level of (what appears to be) floor-level cameras is the occasional rats that seem to be ubiquitous but especially near subway trash-catcher cages. I usually fast forward from stops to avoid seeing them.

1:24:13 - 1:24:18 Isn't that bit to the right part of the original NYW&B Dyre Ave. station platform, or am I misremembering?

Great observation. You may not be misremembering at all and we shall see if there is anyone else that has a different memory from yours and is willing to share.

Looking at a video of the line from relatively early into its operation as part of the NYC subway system, it does look like I was correct / this IS part of the original Dyre Ave. station platform.

This rerouting was ironic, insofar as when the Dyre Avenue spur was connected to the IRT White Plains Road line in 1957, the first train assigned to terminate there was the 2 line. It and the 5 had their northern termini switched in 1965.
@Mahees_230 Жыл бұрын
I used to ride this train frequently back in the day. There never used to be one shot signals between Franklin and Atlantic. It was all green. The signals between Park Place and Chambers used to be two shot. The 5 used to run faster than this. Bouncing and swaying and it was great. I bet this is because of the Union Square wreck. Either pull the hammer back or get nailed with a penalty application and a bawling out from the tower. Sheesh
@wtaenyc Жыл бұрын
Thanks for sharing the memories and sharing how much things have changed as it relates to the signals etc. What are some of the things you noticed that impressed you the most?
@Mahees_230 Жыл бұрын
@@wtaenyc Due to the camera placement, I can clearly see the unused switches, areas that have been hard railed, and the use of CWR versus the jointed rail from back in the day. Oh yeah, no more "bottles in the trunk." That's really impressive.

Awesome job even with the diverting route…. I grew up with the #2 #5 & the 3rd Ave El at GunHill Rd…. Back when they used to store the week day cars on the lower section of GunHill Rd before they removed the tracks….Any chance of a second video with it daytime from Dyre Ave to Flatbush Lex Exp…

Why is there a big stretch between Franklin Ave and Atlantic Ave?? 🤔
@wtaenyc Жыл бұрын
Great question and observation. That would be due to the fact that the 5 is an express train, skipping all local stops between said area. Thanks for asking and we appreciate your support.

Yes, as a New Yorker, and long time enthusiast of the NYC subways, I am very familiar with riding the subways from an early age, starting in the 1950s. I know these things do happen, a diversion becomes necessary for one thing or another. I can stiill hear the announcement, "Attention passengers, due to a condition ahead, this train will run along the Seventh Avenue line. We are sorry for the inconvenience." However, please do a re-do of this line in it's true operating status!! No doubt, despite the diversion, it's still an enjoyable video!! But as the consensus of us NYC subway fans show, a redo is absolutely necessary! OK fans all shout together: RE-DO!! RE-DO!! Re-DO!!! In any case, I'm still impressed by the design of the NYC sbway: the concept of local/express service. To my knowledge, no other subway system incorporates this then innovation that the early engineers/designers had planned and implemented. As this train bypasses local stops on the express tracks, I continue to marvel at this concept. If there are systems anywhere in the world using this concept, please inform me.

Thank you so much for this lovely comment. We truly appreciate you acknowledging our work and we cannot wait for you to see what else we have in store. It is an honor to aid in bringing back the memories you shared in the 1950's and we agree with you as to how spectacular this system truly is. To know that it was built so impressively and to last for centuries, it is also our opinion that is has to be one of the most intriguing system in the world, if not the most complex; like you stated, we stand corrected should there be any other system that shares the same genius. Again, thank you for your comment and we appreciate you for your support.
