that quote misses the fact that if you can do nothing with liberty, it means nothing. in a lawless state where there are no security that your labor will not be be stolen/in vain, liberty means very little. its why countries with low trust end up more often then not being authoritarian as false safety seems like a better option when liberty has no benefits. for democracy to work we need crime low, and trust high which is the exact opposite of what we have now, and look at that: both sides of politics are having their more authoritarian factions gain more support.

We have a slightly different system in Kansas: if you shoplift, store employees detain you until the cops arrive. Then you get charged with either misdemeanor or felony theft, convicted, then go to county jail, sometimes state prison if you tried to steal a high dollar amount. You also get a lifetime ban from the store where you committed your crime, and your mugshot is published in the local paper. But we don't have too much theft, because something seems to be deterring criminals from shoplifting. I wonder what that could be? 🤔🤔🤔

I was shopping at a Dollar Tree in Queens for some Werther's candies, and I was nudged out of the way by two young men who stunk of marijuana, and they proceeded to fill their bags with loads of chips, dips, candy and drinks. As I waited in line to pay, I saw them sashay on out of the store without paying for a thing! This is a regular occurrence at all of our local pharmacies and convenience stores. No conscience. Shoplifting laws have been ridiculously soft since the 90s. From about 2003-2015 I worked as the plain-clothes store ‘detective’ at a few stores in the Baltimore area and caught shoplifters pretty much constantly. And I would have to go to court whenever their cases came up only to see 99% of them not even bother to show up for their court case. Judges would issue a bench warrant for them, but I’d never hear another word about their cases ever again. The few who did bother to show up received an average of sixteen hours of community service; it was an absolute joke. I sure as hell don’t miss junkies trying to stab me with their used needles for $12.50/hr., that’s for damn sure.
