Let's walk through Fusion 360 CAM tutorials covering 4th axis simultaneous, indexing and wrap CAM toolpaths! Machining 4th axis toolpaths around cylinders is easy, but you need to use the 'wrap toolpath' option and often make use of the Patch environment to control your toolpath!

And this is why I love watching these. I've been dealing with a CAM issue myself where I was containing the toolpath and creating these rounded inner edge cuts, and now I know how to fix my toolpaths without having to resort to unnecessary sketches. Thanks for this! Maybe next time I won't get stuck with a delayed flight and might actually be able to make the next open house.

You explained the differences between closed vs open toolpaths, then used a closed path and extended your patch to compensate. Great bit of knowledge though! Learned about open/closed toolpaths, that you can pattern cam ops, and what that form check box is for! Thanks for making these great vids!

I have no idea where you unearth the details of how these operations are accomplished, but I'm glad that you do! Thanks again for sharing all of these tips with us.

Great series! I would love to see some simple 5th axis work. For instance, machining a simple pocket that is cone shaped or round on the bottom and square on top! thanks!

What about 4th axis machining on a rectangular stock? I can see round stock being fairly easy, but I wonder if there's extr steps to not crash the spindle or if fusion would recognize it from the stock sizing. Thank you for these great videos.

Any way to mimic turning the full revolve? I watched the full video, and it does seem that you say it's not possible yet, but Its been a few months since this was posted and some new features have been added. I can sort of get my simulation to show what I'm looking to accomplish, but it won't post the code.

John, does fusion still have no y offset for rapping meaning it willStill leave or remove stock from the solid model?

Hi John, I'm looking at a 1100 or 770 will be doing pistol slide work and knife making, would like 4th axis also. Seems like the 1100 would be the way to go....Any disadvantage to the slower spindle speed? didn't look like you had any problems engraving or using small tooling in your 1100 videos. Thanks between you and Grimsmo I have watched months of videos LOL

Hey John. Just curious if you are planning on having something particularly super interesting and extra special for FF100. Just for no other reason than it being a notable number like 100. :)

For those of you trying to use this tutorial to machine on a 4 axis rotary, this tool path will not work, for some reason on fusion 360 when using a rotary your cutter will not leave the center of the shaft you are cutting. so cutting a spline like this will get it close but there will still be stock on the walls.

If i remember correctly you can make a sketch in the model and select it to contain the toolpath without using patch?
@MechanicalAdvantage
@MechanicalAdvantage 6 жыл бұрын
Joshua Wentworth Sketches are 2 dimensional and the face of this shaft is curved. It would have been possible to excuse a sketched line as a surface but that would pretty much give you the same result as using patch.

Great video! But Yikes! That's a lot of work for simple 4 axis wrap tool path. I am not completely familiar with Fusion 360 so your videos are very useful. Do you need solid models for all tool paths in Fusion 360?

This is great stuff John, but I am kinda horrified at the mental gymnastics required to do something so simple. Are other cam packages for 4th axis so obtuse in their operations ?

I have to cut multiple parts in fusion on the fourth axis and do not have enough material to do one offs each time. Why is there no feature for slotting in between parts? Any suggestions as to how I should go about this?

I think its beacuse fusion is kinda of a "free ware" trash. It's entry level cam for us who don't have the molla for master cam. I use it and it works but it's allways allot of work around and messing around. It's frustrating when you're a toolmaker who has to fight the urge to just go do it in the manual, or just caveman program it (g and m codes on a note pad)

Great video, can you do a video for 4th axis in Fusion for non uniform cylinder like vase?
@MechanicalAdvantage
@MechanicalAdvantage 6 жыл бұрын
Currently a shape like a vase isn't supported. You can only specify one wrap diameter at this time.

But the side walls aren't angled now, how would you do that?
@frederf3227
@frederf3227 6 жыл бұрын
The wrap tool path should adjust X Y Z A correctly to get those radial-plane walls and curved floors. In the machine the looping adaptive should only consist of X (left-right) and A (up-down) motion, lead in in Z notwithstanding. The machine shouldn't move in Y!
@CatNolara
@CatNolara 6 жыл бұрын
But it should, else it wouldn't get the sidewalls of the keys (or whatever you call them) right. They wouldn't be parallel to eachother.
@blightysbits
@blightysbits 6 жыл бұрын
this is the problem with sides and wrapping. as the tool doesn't move in the Y, the sides will be parallel with the cutter. Once its finished with the wrap you would need to go back in with a 2.5d path, but orientate the Z with the wall. then take a cut down the length of the part, then back up the other side. then do a circular pattern to clean up the other sides. Hope that made sense.
@frederf3227
@frederf3227 6 жыл бұрын
I see what you mean. The machine would have to move in Y the diameter of the tool cylinder between the two walls. Otherwise the part couldn't rotate to put each wall plane aligned up without colliding with the tool. But assuming these wall planes are radial outward it's important to remember they aren't supposed to be parallel to each other.

time for an update. There is no patch tab :D
@CudaPro

Are you serious? We have to create patches (which are really surfaces). Surfaces have no thickness so it's odd that Autodesk would call these patches. So we use a "trick" and make a 0 offset surface. Sorry, I meant a 0 offset "patch". Then we make more "patches". Then we have to split and modify the "patches". Then we delete "patches". Then we have to extend the ends of all patches to get the tool path to cut all the material at the ends. All this just to get simple 4 axis wrap tool path? Yikes!!! You mentioned that we "wouldn't know it" a few times in this video. Why is that? Why as end users would we not know it? No, I am not a MasterCAM, GibbCAM, EdgeCAM, Surfware, HSM User. I just have been using CAD/CAM for over 30 years. Not an expert, just saying this looks like a lot of work for simple 4 axis wrap tool path.
