The one thing about this episode is that it was the first episode where Dennis Franz got top billing. Previously, David Caruso or Jimmy Smits had been billed over Dennis. In my opinion, Dennis Franz should have been at the top of the cast from day one.
@halnywiatr
@halnywiatr 4 жыл бұрын
Agreed, but there is no saying he was given top billing, he earned it.
@RogerBates7
@RogerBates7 3 жыл бұрын
It was unlikely that he would've ever gotten it over Caruso, because it was believed that with Caruso's talent... the show would become a vehicle for him the way CSI Miami later would. There was also the problem of Caruso's ego, which I'm certain played a role that, as well. I do think by the time Jimmy Smits came along, however, it was evident that Sipowicz would be a huge part of the show and his seniority should've gotten him top billing at that point.
@rogerd777
@rogerd777 3 жыл бұрын
@@RogerBates7 You are right. The way network executives think, you wouldn't look at an actor like Franz and call him a leading man. He was considered a "character". From my understanding, the Sipowitz character wasn't originally supposed to survive the shooting, but the writers changed their minds. Without his character, I doubt if the series would have lasted.
@RogerBates7
@RogerBates7 3 жыл бұрын
@@rogerd777 100% agreed on both counts. While Dennis had credibility from Hill Street Blues, Beverly Hills Buntz and Die Hard 2, he was kind of a character actor and an ensemble guy prior to NYPD Blue. Nobody thought he would become what he did in that role. That he's stayed retired since it ended, to me, demonstrates that he doesn't think he can top what he accomplished in those 12 seasons.
@rogerd777
@rogerd777 3 жыл бұрын
@@RogerBates7 Absolutely. I think he made enough money in 12 seasons of NYPD Blue that at his age, he probably decided that he just didn't need to work anymore and enjoy life. He was 61 when Blue finished. I am 64 and retirement is way off in my future.

There were so many great actors in this series from beginning to end. There are standouts of course; Clapp, McDaniel, Smits, Turturro, Lawrence, Franz, Delany and I'm sure that I've missed a couple more. Possibly the best ensemble cast I've seen.

They later used Danny's death to symbolize the 9/11 attack, and it's impact on the NYPD. One of the most moving episodes of any television series, ever. Andy is probably the best character ever written, and that's saying something. #NYPDBLUELOVE

Money aside, I understand why he left the show. They created a good character and he played it well, but during his final season the writers didn't do it justice and failed to find a way to develop him. The obsession with Diane became downright silly.

Talk about jumping into icy water feet first! Bobby's death in the " Hearts and Souls " episode won an Emmy over " The Sopranos " pilot that year. And Schroder was shot out of a cannon the next episode. Yikes! Hard act to follow but he did as well as he could given the limitations his character was given.

By this point in the show it was the " Dennis Franz show " . A couple good episodes a season but it lost its juice. Simone was already enough of a thin written character ( due to caruso premature departure) but Danny wasn't very well written and his growth really went down hill as the seasons progress. I have read reports it wasn't just " family issues" but problems with milch not writing his character better and by this point milch wasn't even turning scripts in on time. Best seasons are 1-4 with some great episodes sprinkled afterwards . Best part was Franz. Seemed like all the other characters were stereotypes of some sort later on down the line.
