By letting Andy take the new shooting, Fancy lets him know that he still trusts him. Arthur Fancy is a fantastic character-- a highly competent supervisor who has faith in his detectives.

The dialogue between Fanci and Andy throughout the show was some of the best ever written. Two people from different worlds, learning to respect each other after some tense standoffs.

The relationship between the two of them was one of my favorite parts of the show. Despite the tension (especially whenever a racial incident took place), there was still always a mutual respect for each other. Then after their tensions finally led to them trading fists in season 6, everything changed. Andy had evolved and Fancy saw it during seasons 7 and 8. By the time Fancy left in season 8, they parted on the best of terms and a whole new level of respect for each other, both as cops and as people.

At this stage of their relationship, both men resented how much they needed and owed to one another. In the end, there was not just respect, but friendship. Not that either one would admit it. I think this show changed a lot of hearts. Thank you, Dennis. Thank you, James.

This was a show that made you care for the characters. When problematic problems resulted in positive conclusions, we as fans appreciated this show even more. In my opinion the cast represented a championship team who, when a player had to retire or move on there was someone ready to step in and keep the dynasty going. NYPD Blue did this for 12 years.
@bredrew19902 жыл бұрын
This goes to show how complicated the relationship was between Fancy and Andy. That they both had a level of mutual respect despite what all went down in this episode. I also strongly like the ending of this one too at what Sylvia says to Andy.

You know the funny thing is that Lt. Fancy really does Respect Andy as a Detective, if not a person, (AT THIS TIME). You can tell when he tells Andy, "...they send me another one just like you, but maybe that one can't do the job like you can." -- That's showing some respect there for Andy as a Detective. And Andy jumped right in as soon as they heard about the Shooting. Andy's mind immediately put 2 and 2 together, and Lt. Fancy immediately said, "Check it out". He picked Andy, and not Vince (who we all know was a slacker) to go take care of this. We all carry baggage of some kind, and it's tough sometimes, that's all I can say (all different baggage, all different situations).

@@skylordsix I actually referenced that on one of my previous comments (somewhere around here), but I think it was when Baldwin Jones originally transferred into the Squad and he told Lt. Fancy that he had heard some bad things about Andy, so he had some reservations.

This is one of my two favorite shows on TV. (Rockford Files is the other). I particularly like how the writers use character development over 8 years to tell a story so complicated, no amount of exposition would ever be enough. The truth is, Sipowicz is a product of his family life, Vietnam, the 70s, and above all, his experiences as a kid and a young man. Nobody is BORN a bigot or misogynist, it develops over time. And undoing it takes time too. The brilliance here is that the producers (and ABC) allowed an eight year story arc (Andy and Lt. Fancy) and a twelve year arc (Andy's redemption) in an era where shows are lucky to get the five necessary for syndication. People will be watching this show fifty years from now...
