When a cop gets shot, the whole available police force's entire focus becomes getting the fallen officer to the hospital, and apprehending the person who did it. Yes it may be over the top, but many of these officers know each other personally and may be close friends to a certain degree. Before you say "that's unnecessary" ask yourself what you would do if your friend was just shot and you had the authority to do something about it.

So many assholes in this comment section. The cop was shot in the head and was clinging on to his life. They had this many units to block intersections ahead of time so the ambulance carrying him doesn't have to stop a single time. He did survive, he honestly would not have made it if they did not make a clear path 5-10mins ahead of the ambulance like this.

I am a former police officer and I have been a party to these types of situations. I worked for 10 years in a department that has a quarter of the cops that NYC has, Most times at the beginning of the shift we are generally behind by a dozen calls, NYC has to much worse. I understand that is their brother, but you need to keep it together and realize that either that scene needs help being secured or there is the fact that other people need the police too, and that was a huge response to escort the ambulance. It's very hard to NOT do what they did, but I am surprised the supervisors on shift let them get away with that. I was a street sergeant, and I would not let that happen and those are some of the hardest calls to make because of what is running through my mind as well as the other officers. It just goes to show you the solidarity the guys have out there though, and for that I cannot blame them, if I was on the job that day, I would have done the same mf'n thing unless a supervisor ordered me not too. Again, very very hard to not react this way!

as a former nypd officer that is wrong we always have enough units at the scene and more the rush to the hospital is more than needed thats what makes nyc and state for that matter so great we never leave a man down and we make sure they get to the hospital asap just as if you was in the military they do the same thing they rush your butt into the hospital, this is a 1013 in nyc that means everyone going if so funny how other police look at us and ask how we do what we do but we do it right we always have 2 officers per unit and now in other places they now are doing that we come in numbers where other states can only dream of haven that happen in a very bad scenes

Slappy Spankers In the eyes as both law enforcement and military experience I understand why many officers fled to the scene. Although they responded in that matter and force, it's not necessarily the correct thing to do. The amount of units responding in that clip is unbelievably ridiculous for an unfolding event like such - officer down or officer hit. For a call like that you only need a maximum of 6 or 7 police units going to the scene. As for the PAU, again, no need unless the suspect took off where visibility is hard for on the ground officers to see. It's idiotic to have that many units while consuming a helicopter.

Did anyone ever think that this response was out of respect? I'm sure if a State farm employee was nearly killed. You'd see an escort of SF cars. Its the same for the military. Its respect. And FYI, when the "officer down" call goes out and you are a white shirt then you must show up. The NYPD is a very big police department. One of the largest in the United States. And supervisors must show up. No matter if you're on it off the clock. You're a supervisor and an officer is down. Best believe a marked police car will come and get you. Whether you like it or not. Why, because it shows the General Public that even during the midst of chaos within an agency, their leaders or superiors support their fellow man. It shows strength, structure, and support. Which is what the people need. It shows unity within the department despite what happens between them.

ya also have to realized all those cops are not from the same pct....once they had determined which route they're going to take, central is ordered to notify those pct that cover those routes to start blocking intersections....for the most part after the ambulance crosses from brooklyn to manhattan most of the escort in brooklyn goes back to patrol, but that night most of them were called to the scene of the crime to seal two buildings off where they believed the perp ran, perp was caught an hour later

The police force is like a close knit family, when one of your brothers or sisters life is on the line, you do everything you can to increase their chance of survival. The secondary reason for so many cruisers is a show of force to the criminals. Police departments have to show that they do not take police injury lightly.

I trained in pediatrics at Brookdale Medical Center in Brooklyn (Linden Blvd and Rockaway pkwy), also a trauma center. On my way into work, I witnessed too many times the end point of this race: police cruisers parked everywhere near the ED entrance. We all knew what this meant: one (or more) of their brothers or sisters were down... they needed each other's support, they needed to be there. Anyone who questions this doesn't understand.

People that bitch about cops are always the first ones to call them. I understand in a police force that large 34,000 officers there are a lot of bad ones but for every shitty cop there are a dozen great cops. Yeah I find this a bit too much. Honestly its one of those times you get too into the moment and I can't really blame the cops for being in force. I honestly believe many of those cops probably have the idea to give blood to save their brother. In my home town a known drug dealer was shot 4 blocks from the hospital and the first cop on scene knew that guy didn't have time to wait and he picked the guy up put him in the back of the cruiser and sped off to the hospital. Saved the guys life. Again not all cops are bad.

@WhiteNoise493 2 жыл бұрын
To the people saying this was excessive, number one it's a brotherhood. Number two, they wouldn't need so many units to clear traffic if people pulled the hell over but everyone, especially in NYC, is too self important to take 10 seconds to get out of the way so someone else can live. When New Yorkers and the public at large start pulling over consistently for emergency vehicles, escorts like this won't be necessary. Until that day comes, which it never will because we're an extremely individual, self center society, escorts like this will continue.

The MTA placed them on certain buses so they are more visible to riders at night, so the number of people who ride the buses would increase. the shooting took place in brooklyn, 3 miles from the hospital in manhattan. waiting for a chopper to arrive and fly 3 miles would take much longer than the 10 minute drive with no stop lights or traffic. also, nyc doesn't use helicopters for trauma transport anyway. there's usually a hospital within 2-3 miles of any location.

It is, but sometimes given the flow of traffic, in certain instances you are forced to just glide along the shoulder or right lane. Since this is in a burrow of NYC, I am not 100% sure if things are different than Long Island in the suburbs where I am. As long as the vehicle can get where it needs to, I don't think the driver will give too much thought if someone is fully stopped or not.

A lot of people in the comments seem to hate and not appreciate police officers at all and I've noticed this trend a lot, particularly online. I think there should be a national holiday once a year where all officers nationwide don't enforce the law and just stay home. A "Hunger Games" of sorts to remind the populace of what they're not grateful for. People take things for granted until they don't have it.

I agree with your sentiments entirely. That's what ambulances are for; fast travel to hospital, in most cases they are life threatening injuries (hence the need for an ambulance). If there is a concern that the ambulance cannot progress through traffic swiftly enough, an escort may be granted by police. Having 30 vehicles is not an escort, it's a reckless overkill and serves absolutely no purpose and professionally, I cannot see any justification for it, unless someone knows otherwise?

Well the fact that we can all see from the video that they were moving at a considerable speed kind of pokes a hole in your theory. Certainly in the military part of drivers training is to drive in convoys at speeds up to 60mph. I'm sure the police have similar training

I Think that was basiclly a Level 2 Mobilazation Because 6 HWY 1 CARS CAME Unless That Was 1/2 of Brooklyns Cars. That Taxi was from the 9th Pct Because the 13 PCT Taxi Has A Silver Bumper and the ESU Was Either I Think Truck 1 or 6 2 Ambulances and 1 EMS Supervisor.

***** A cop car can't be marked and be undercover at the same time. In the world of police, a marked car would have NYPD plastered on the side. An unmarked (or undercover) would be blank, like the taxi cruiser.

***** Then you should have explained it like that the first time. When you say "its marked but undercover", no one will have a clue what you are talking about.

Nope, Sgt. Brennan lived through the headshot and is in fact back on duty. On top of that, the perp was arrested and prosecuted. Get your facts corrected and find something in life to be thankful of.
