The mod support is gigantic. The game cannot die, it has basically unlimited content. You cannot experience every path, every focus, in the entire game in one human lifespan. From the giants like Kaiserredux, to lore heavy TNO and EaW, there is something new always. Not to mention tons of out of game content. Kaiserreich documentaries, radio plays, or fully voice acted TNO April fool stories, it really is unlimited content.

@@Aryanwood I think Paradox should further embrace mods. Add a creation club like system, and give the modders a sizeable cut to encourage development. Paradox is helping with getting the mods out there, like advertising on its KZbin channel and EaW updates on hoi4 official Twitter, but really good mods and such are hidden in the steam workshop where something like Radio station mods are next to gigantic multi developer Giga-Reworks. Maybe the Hoi4 Launcher should have mod showcases in a new button, where Mods could advertise themselves, show off gameplay, and list nations and recent updates added.

I really enjoy Paradox rts games. The strategy is deep, but in single player not timed. You have time to think deeply about what you are going to do. I think that is actually just one more point for its replayability - the game goes at your pace. You can spend every hour in detail micromanaging every single division into the perfect position, which will result in a very long game obviously - but you can also just choose a nation that is unlikely to get attacked, turn the speed to maximum and get to 1945 in a single afternoon. You can draw the games as long as you want - or make it as fast as you want - whatever you resonate with more at the moment. Just another thing that makes this game so amazing

Got over 2k hours since buying the game 4 years ago, you can always find a new build to try with new countries and since getting into multiplayer it can lead to very interesting games if you can find the right people to play with, which is probably the biggest challenge as the mp community as a whole can be very toxic
@nveronline2914
@nveronline2914 6 ай бұрын
I understand where you are coming from with MP being toxic. I primarily play multiplayer. Even the time i spend in single player nowadays is for finding better stratagies in multiplayer. The reason you find multiplayer so toxic is partially because of the enormous skill mismatch between you and many knowlegable players. People lack the patience to teach, and sadly resort to insults when people cant play well.

Hoi4's mp is notorious for being toxic and near rapid with their various strats and metas. Great video. It surprised me to learn that HOI4 has the highest player base in Paradox’s panoply of grand strategy games, but it deserves it for all the reasons you listed. Personally, it’s my least favorite of them all, but I do still have fun, once I finally figured out how to play lol. IMO, Paradox’s biggest weakness is their abysmal tutorials (newer games have improved). I’d say their biggest strength is their dedication to the modding community. Paradox embraces and encourages modding more than any company I’ve seen in strategy games.

im suprised that you are suprised that hoi4 is the most played paradox game. It has huge advantages over EU4 when it comes to playability, mainly the fact that eu4 can be extremely overwhelming with the amount of DLCs which are needed to play the game at a reasonably modern level. Hoi4's dlcs are relatively few in number, and very transparent about what they add.

The mods definitely increased HoI4’s longevity massively. Like, I myself like to see new things as opposed to the same things, since I don’t get to play as often. But mods allow you to experience a whole new setting, whether it’s an alt-history where Germany won WW2, a mod that is based on the world of Fallout… or a mod set in… the My Little Pony mod (the one I play, it’s actually really really good you gotta believe me. I was waiting for mod support as reason. I have a bit of experience with HoI4 mod making myself (have never uploaded anything to steam though), and let me tell you that it really is insane how easy it is to start modding the game. You don't need even the smallest bit of programming understanding to know how to mod it (since there are many helpful KZbin tutorials and a pretty big modding Discord) and there are even official tools that help you with debugging. HoI4 is probably one of the few games that every player in the playerbase could manage to and should try to mod themselves at some point.

I think HoI‘s longevity is due to constant release of good DLC‘s that actually ad to the game mechanics and tend to change it up (changing mechanics and forcing players to adapt strategy). The devs also seem to listen to the community as many updates actually take into account players wishes. Not to mention that this game has great mods. HOI4 really pushing you to think and considering each decision and life with the consequences. I still remember losing almost all of my elite infantry divisions because i got too aggressive and then got surrounded and decimated. And also this games really makes you want to learn the history. I also still remember when playing as GB, after King George V passed away i don't know which decision is historical between letting King Edward VIII stayed as a king or letting him abdicate. After quick search I finally knew the history and reason behind it.

My one objection to the game is the cost. If you were to buy the base game (ALONE), it would cost you £35. However, if you were planning to try out the DLC’s, 1 MONTH costs you £5. And if you plan on taking the game to a whole new level (I’m talking mastering navy, airforce and even doing disaster saves), it would cost you about £110 EXTRA. I know this game’s great an all, but the sheer cost of the game is limiting the player count drastically, as most wouldn’t bother to spend £140 for the full game.

In Hoi4 veteran mesures my 500+ hours is not much, but I enjoyed all of it, even if I was frustrated because of one mistake that messed up the whole game. I really loved to do achievements. Every of it was a different challange with different difficulties. Unfortunately I couldn't manage to get every of them, but I have a little more than 100 achievements, and I am proud of it. I will also remember with nostalgia those games that were played by me and my friends. Those games created memories, that I will never forget. One part not mentioned in the video which is absolutely incredible on the developers part is (unless it’s been changed) If you are playing a friend in multiplayer and you personally own all the DLC’s your friends will be able to use your DLC’s if you are hosting the game. In addition to the history side, having that roleplay aspect really draws in an international crowd, where anyone can hop in hoi4 and feel almost "at home" as so many nations participated in this grand struggle. This keeps expanding the playerbase as each time a nation DLC drops, that focus nation's people will be inclined to play a game tailored to them, about them and for them.

One thing not mentioned in here is that multiplayers limit is whatever you can handle, and players can co-op a nation. This is super cool and fun for more casual players to duo or trio vs the AI as a single nation, and for "competitive" multiplayer players allowing them to 3-4 man stack on nations like russia/germany that tend to have alot of aspects and complexity allowing you to play the games without pausing and on higher speeds. Also if you commit to not pausing outside of breaks a full multiplayer game even with like 30 players is very easy to complete in under 8 hours, and that's normally if the game is dragging till 1946, if a game ends early in 1943 for instance it could be over in as few as like 4 hours.

Hoi4 always feels so at home, you command and conquer, and in between that, you appreciate the process and game progression, it just felt so gratifying conquering nations and at the end of your game, you can look back and what you had created, but truly, it never gets bored especially when you try challenging yourself to new things like playing minor nations, and trying out goofy strategies, the sky is the only limit

I want to add on to the mod support. That there is so much mod support that people have literally made enterly different games using it (2 notable examples are 2 different visual novels made usinf HOI4). Also to add onto the constant updates. Even people who don't own the DLC get new content with the release that changes the game a lot. Lastly another reason , I would add is multiplayer. As 1 only the host needs the dlc so even if you don't own the dlc you can play it on a friend's server and experience it. 2. Playing with friends is a lot of fun with all the betrayal , negotions and rage.

Competitive multiplayer is extremely intense and complex, you have to counter ennemy designs and units, you need to adapt your positionning, you need to choose where to strike, you need to manage ressources, to balance your faction well between infantry/tanks/navy/air You need to always prepare for some ennemy naval invasion or push.

The music you used was despite being already lower volume than your voice very distracting and made it hard to understand you, due to it being very epic and grand. Also might up the volume of your voice a bit and speak a tic slower. For a non-native english speaker this makes it easier to understand. Thank you and keep on doing great videos

Another very good example for the same genre is Empire At War. The Game came out in *2006* and it's playerbase is still growing. That's because the developer, Petroglyph, opened up pretty much its entire code for modding. It has a rich and collaberative modding community, that is well supported by Petroglyph who still provide updates to help improve the game for modders and fix issues that have arisen. Most recently they switched the game from 32-bit to 64-bit. This opened up a massive amount of new processing power for modders to use. The game has been kept alive for nearly two decades thanks to this philosophy, and its still one of the most popular rts games in the Star Wars IP. More developers need to take the attitude to modding that Petroglyph and Paradox do, because it provides so much more and long lasting vitality to their games.
