In part 3 I finished the Phoenix radio but it had a temporary speaker fitted while I waited for parts for the original to arrive. See how I restore this speaker to working condition and to almost original looks.

David your work and videos are superb. I've been watching them back to back. PVA is the way to go with speaker surrounds. Be careful spraying the cone, in addition to your warnings on potential coil rubbing, the sound of the speaker will also change.

Hi Red Robbo, I will use PVA in future. I take your point with spraying the cone through I haven't noticed any difference, I guess you are talking about stiffening the suspension part with paint I doubt it adds much weight as it's a very light spray. Thanks 🙂

Hi David, back in the day when I re-coned JBL P.A speakers and the like, we use to source cones, voice coils etc from Queensland Speaker Repairs if my memory serves me correctly. They would also supply the appropriate adhesives and shims to centre the voice coil. Probably more expensive than eBay/China, but the owner knew his stuff and we were always supplied kits that fitted within days.

Hi Graham, thanks for the info. They aren't far from me and I have their card. They are more expensive and if I have a radio worthy of the expense I'll go and see what they can do. The foam suspension supports I use have a limited life. I should go and get some adhesive from them though 🤔🙂

When you're at the stage of having nothing to lose but you want to retain as much originality as possible, you can't really do better than this. Looks original but very clean from the back and what it looks like from the front is neither here nor there bacause of course it can't be seen with the radio assembled in it's case. This radio needs nothing doing for a very long time now, it'll probably be around 100 years old before it's ready for the next overhaul!

In 1977, I was preparing to leave the United States Army as my second 3 year hitch was coming to an end. To that end, my unit released me early from my field recruiters duties (Didn't want a recruiter who was getting ready to get out, you know!) So to kill the time, I enrolled in a community college to study auto mechanics. One of the first things the instructor told us was to remove all rings and metal watch bands before going to work in the shop area in fact we would get demerit points that counted against our overall grade should we be found wearing such items. The reason, of course was that such items could easily short out electrical circuits should the ring come in contact with the positive wire and ground. This short would pass enough amps to melt the gold in your ring, or the metal in your watch band and also burn your finger or wrist very badly, in fact, he told us of students who lost their fingers to such incidents. Of course the chance os shorting out 240 volts or higher in a radio chasse may not be as probable, however the chance does exist. This is why I wear no jewelry or metal banded watches when tinkering with my hobby builds of different circuits. Just a thought I figured it would not hurt to share here. Of course now that I lost my wonderful wife of 51 years and 4 days to cancer last summer, I no longer wear a gold wedding band with that little diamond in it anyhow. I did wear it for a few months to honor her but people began to talk of my mind getting a bit weak after the hell of seeing cancer eat her alive so to please them I did remove it. I keep it in a small box on my dresser and still look at it every night before retiring, a sort of good night to that wonderful woman who gave me such joy for so very long. Never take your lovely wife for granite as some day you may be without her, and God how that hurts.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, thanks. I am aware of the risk with finger jewellery and I didn't wear a ring for my entire working career for that reason. I feel the risk here is low as I never put my finger in a live set and wearing my wedding ring outweighs the risk of an angry wife. If it was up to me I wouldn't wear it for the reason you stated. I am all to aware that the time is approaching when one of us will leave the other, I just hope it's me first as I don't want to endure the pain. Thanks Jerry.

I’ve watched Shango066 do this before. Original speakers need the treatment. There is also speaker 🔊 reconing glue to cover all of the speaker 🔊 paper 📝 with, such as if the speaker cone is punctured or torn. If you’ve ever had a problem with a raspy sounding speaker, and it’s binding, you probably have dirt between the speaker coil and the magnet, or a damaged speaker coil, which is binding and rubbing against the magnet. If a speaker is damaged on the outside edge, this can lead to buzzing. Speaker reconing glue can work for this, even if the speaker cone is severely deteriorated. Makes it sound like brand new. The only time to replace a speaker is if it is beyond all methods of being able to save it. Often, new speakers are not made to the specs of the original ones, and fitting it in the radio can present a challenge. I’ve seen this with Shango066 and Radiotvphononut. I hate to replace original parts, since this often takes away from the item being original. Speakers must be an exception, since they are usually hidden behind a speaker cloth.

When you glue the rubber to the cone you shouldn't leave the glue to dry as it is required, as in this application that is not necessary, it will stick good enough. For the outer side of the rubber, just roll it outwards, the bump on the rubber ring should keep it in place, then use the same type of adhesive that you used on the cone but this time let it dry as required by the glue manufacturer. You should work the glued parts with your hands to assure firm bond. Also I would vacuum the space where coil sits. When I was a kid I used to repair speakers, I wish I had KZbin then. I really enjoy you videos, keep em coming.

Hi David - just came across this one today - so have watched all 3.5 parts at once. A job that seemed to have you rather taxed on a number of occasions. Interesting and efficient speaker repair - I used to use a fairly crude system for repairs to old speaker cones that had holes in them using tissue paper and glue which I built up in layers. I'm not to sure about the thinly veiled references to NZ radios that do not even have circuit diagrams... :)
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Kenneth, most jobs are taxing for me as I'm only learning as I go 🙂 I can usually repair holes in speakers using the same method you suggested but this had extensive damage to the suspension and if I repaired that it would have killed off the bass. I only found out later but the radio was made in NZ and sold in a store in Brisbane under the name Phoenix. I couldn't find any schematics for it even under the parent company radios, there were plenty of diagrams for other NZ radios however 🙂

Hey David - I do understand you are "learning as you go" don't take my comments as criticism - they are not. I love watching your work - in some ways you are much like me with your comments and your humor - and I am not one of these people who get upset over comments on NZ! I mean as long as you get enjoyment out of what you do - that is the important thing. @@DavidTipton101 speaker repair is quite challenging and practice makes perfect. I had a small all metal chassis 4 tube silvertone radio that had a torn speaker. The voice coil and spider suspension was still good so I carefully cut a paper cone from a modern scrapped TV speaker it was 8ohm and I needed 3.2 ohm so I just cut the voice coil off and glued it to the old voice coil and glued the edge to the frame and it works great of course I didn't mention shimming the voice coil during the repair. I found on eBay complete paper cones with wrinkle edges for small speaker repairs for about $12.00 I think that's a little high for a piece of paper. I know how to fold paper into a new cone but the problem is making the wrinkle suspension. I'll figure it out one day

Looks and sounds brand new! Especially liked the speaker repair. I've seen that done before but I have a speaker from 1926 that needs a new cone. The cone is too ripped and narrow to replace with a modern equivalent. Do people press their own cones in this case? Seems like a lot of work for a one-off repair. BTW, Tubesandmore sells a product called Service Cement that's supposed to work well with speaker foam.

Hi SY, this was my first attempt at speaker repair and it wasn't pretty. It works and sounds very good though, one of my better sounding radios. I have an early 30s speaker that needs a new cone and after hours of searching found one that should do the job, It hasn't arrived from Hong Kong as yet to confirm. It should be possible to fabricate a new cone, maybe from stiff plastic sheet or doped paper or doped thin cardboard. I take it you are in the US and you have speaker repair companies that could supply parts or do the repair, cost would be a consideration in that case. I can get speaker adhesive locally. Good luck with your speaker 👍🙂 Link to the speaker cone I ordered: www.ebay.com.au/itm/313140189219?ViewItem=&item=313140189219

I once had to do a similar speaker, but clearance issues made me use the foam surround flipped over in reverse........dont think there was any real difference to the ear......but it gave me a lot more clearance.....the downside was I have to cut more of the original cone.....oh and I painted the whole cone with contact adhesive, which dries like rubber anyway.

Sometimes it works, sometimes there is not enough room and it hits the speaker cage, but its worth a try and you get lucky occasionally .........I have to say though, your video's are inspiring me to get out and do some "Fun" electronics and not just work electronics all the time..... I must get something interesting out of the store room and do a restore soon.....

I really like what you do and how I can fix some of my old tube stuff. The only thing I don't understand is why do you use foam surround? It will hold 10 to 20 years and it is gone. I have a old JBL speakers that had foam from the early years and now with cloth surround they sound better and will not die before me now. Would like to hear why you use foam.
@DavidTipton101

Hi Harald, I use foam because it was all I could get at the time and it's still hard to get paper cones. In the US you can buy replacement speaker parts and kits for a reasonable price but not here. Importing from the US is out of the question due to the freight cost. I can keep a supply of foam suspension surrounds for most speakers and it doesn't require replacing the entire cone and voice coil. Thanks Harald 🙂

Hi Lynton, I thought I answered this one a day or two ago, I must not have pressed enter. That radio was built in New Zealand and sold by a Brisbane store, the store burnt down in the 20s and was rebuilt, hence the name of the radio. We win The Ashes and you guys keep them, they should be on Scott's (Morrison) mantelpiece 😄

I just found your channel. That. was a great way to do the refoaming. , and masking of the cone for the sandblasting! As mentioned earlier, PVA glue will give you more work time. Also, where did you get the surrounds? I can find them here in the States, but it seems like you had more sizes.

Hi David, Ha-ha... yes PVA... got it 😂 Thanks for your comment David and welcome. I'm amazed at how many people from the US are watching. I get the speaker parts from China, we don't have quite the access to that sort of thing in Oz or certainly not as cheap. The link to where I got them is: www.ebaystores.com.au/diyhobbyistbase/category25523228011-/_i.html?_fsub=25523228011&_sid=1419409821&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322 That is the Aussie eBay but you should be able to find them on US eBay. Aaahrr!! When you said "contact adhesive" I cringed. That stuff contains toluene (C6H5CH3) which means it destroys foam surround. Always use PVAC glue (like white "woodglue") It has a fair open time, which allows for correcting the position of the foam surround. BTW, if you first glue the ring to the frame, it already sits in the correct position. Then glueing the inner ring to the cone is much easier. Instead of putting a weight on top, use clothespins to clamp the surround.

Haha... this was my first try at repairing a speaker, I have improved since then and I now use a PVA based adhesive. Having said that, I changed the dial lamp in this radio a few months ago and the speaker and it's surround are still in first class condition, thanks for the tip 🙂

David Sir, i have a celestion speaker in old valve radio having some holes on it. Can these holes be repaired? Pls suggest
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 4 жыл бұрын
Hi manoj, you can repair holes with small pieces of kitchen paper, coffee filters or similar soaked in PVA glue or contact adhesive. If the repair is on the suspension area of the speaker use the contact adhesive as it remains flexible. If you make the repair too heavy on the suspension area you will stop the cone moving full travel which will dampen out the bass sounds so keep it as thin and flexible as possible.

Great repair job. I usually use the rubber surrounds as they tend to last far longer. I’ve done a few similar repairs when restoring 1970s-1980s Japanese radio cassettes (boomboxes) that I collect (hoard). Can’t do tuner repairs/realignments though. Are you interested? I have a Sharp GF-9090 from 1977 that needs a little tuner work. I’m at Mt Gravatt, Brisbane.
@DavidTipton101
@DavidTipton101 4 жыл бұрын
Hi James, are you saying you can get rubber surrounds instead of foam rubber like I used, that would be better I imagine. To be honest I wouldn't want to do a radio like the Sharp, I struggle with the modern stuff and I'm still trying to get my head around valve radios. Thank you anyway 👍🙂
@revelairfanman6171
@revelairfanman6171 4 жыл бұрын
Hi David, Thanks for your response. Yes the rubber surrounds do last much longer than the foams - you usually only get around 10 years out of the foams depending on temperature and storage method. The FM tuner of the Sharp works fine apart from the situation where Triple J (107.7) is right up the top of the dial (max adjustment). It needs to adjusted back to 107.7 instead of 108+. The signal generator method is what’s used but that’s all I know. :-)
