Back in the early 00's up here in the pacificNW, my friends family owned a log truck business and the the grandfather owned an 80's (wanna say it was an 83') Superliner with the detroit v8 that was turned up to 900 hp. That rig was badass and had silver paint with blue and pink pin striping if I remember, and those twin stacks with the tips turned out were always rolling coal. The truck was kinda a local legend among the logging community up there.

Retired now but remember some distinctive sounding engines in past years-Mack and Cat V8s, 2-stroke Detroits-V12 sounds better than the V8 IMHO, and older big cam Cummins, which happens to be the only older engine I’ve driven. My last ride had a DD15 which got the job done, but there was always a check engine light on; made sure it had DEF and changed the filter regularly, the local Freightliner dealer couldn’t figure it out! Computers are great for making truck videos, not tuning truck engines.😜Thanks for sharing the sight and sound of a classic!

This was exceptionally satisfying to watch. Especially since we never had Superliners, and for that matter Mack V8's, over here in South Africa. Thank you so much. I believe you'll have another regular spectator here in future. Keep up the good work. Take care, cheers!! PS: I'm still wearing Canterbury shorts every day. I had an F-Model Mack in the '70's with a 325hp. V-8 and would run like a raped ape. Though it wouldn't out pull a Cat of equal hp. it would hang with the rest pretty good......but, here's the catch. If I told another driver my truck has a V-8 Mack in it they would and slap their knee and ask, "what are you doing with a barge anchor under the cab"? Now everybody loves them.

A "benchmark" that NOBODY ELSE RECOGNIZED. And by the way, Macks that are "all Mack" from the factory have been very "rare" for decades. And that "Superliner" is a piss-poor KW W900A/Pete 359 "clone" as far as its "styling cues".

Many years ago I was driving an E9 Mack 12 speed with straight thru pipes driving wheat seasons in western NSW, the truck could be heard coming 3 klm out of town and the change over driver would have a hot coffee on the table before it pulled up. Nothing short of a 12 cylinder GM sounds as good, well OK maybe a Scania V8? There were many E9 Superliners running wheat and cotton in their day and still a few out here during harvests. Hoewever times have changed and long distances here require greater fuel efficiency given the price of diesel now. Great video of a classic Mack.

I wonder if the owner has got the Mack low oil/low air bell, sounded like a door bell as soon as you turned the key. And the Williams air throttle. The E9 V8 Superliner I drove once had a 12 speed Mack transmission where the reverse was an air shift, very easy when you are backing. By the way, plenty of Kiwis over here, if they all left at once the trucking and mining industry would grind to a halt quick smart!

Nice Super Puppy. I remember back in the late 70's I used to see a man in Upstate NY with a R-700 pulling a milk tanker which always caught my eye since my Father and I had a friend who pulled chemicals out of North Jersey and his first tractor when he made the move to an Owner/Operator in 76 was a 72 R-600. I used to help him weekends with maintenance, washing/ waxing etc. I felt like it was part mine. Then the summer of 83 he started to make longer runs and needed a more comfortable cab and a sleeper, so he traded for a new Binder. But I still remember the Fall 1981 issue of Road King was the first time I saw a picture of a Mack Super Puppy and always liked them. Thanks again for the video I enjoyed seeing your Mack still on the road and being used as she was intended.

These Mack V8s always ran strong, but back when they first came in the 60s, and through the 70s they were unreliable. They had such a bad reputation that on the used market they sold for a lot less than endt 675 and 676 powered trucks. I'll bet that I did at least 25 or 30 swaps to repower them with something else in the late seventies and 1980s. The guy I bought my garage building off of had one in a dm800 that gave him so many problems well still under warranty Mac put a 3408 caterpillar in it. I believe LaTona rigging up in North Jersey owns the truck now, supposedly it's all restored and pretty

Beautiful truck, sounds awesome! What is the advantage to an air starter? Think you may find that cab on a Brockway too , I wish Jake would have made an engine brake for the V8, did you have both manual pump engine, and electronic engine, never saw an electronic V8 in an American Mack, we had 500 hp, electronic was 610 hp? Stay safe guys,
@NZTruckingMag3 жыл бұрын
Hey Dean, so the air start's main advantage is that it allows you to start the truck if the battery's flat - you could always charge the starter off a tyre. The cab on a Brockway, yes you do. Yep, we had the 610 👍🏻
@deeremeyer17493 жыл бұрын
@@NZTruckingMag Of course a battery that "flat" isn't going to excite the alternator or power on an electric fuel shutoff IF it even powers the air "dump" solenoid to "power" the starter and tire valve stem Shrader valves work damned poorly in "reverse" and contrary to the hilarious conventional wisdom that one 100 psi tire gets your starter air reservoir to "50 psi", another gets it to "75 psi", another to "87.5 psi" etc, you will never get the air "pressure" to proper starting level of 120 psi using that ridiculous "tap a tire" method of "jump starting" an air-start truck with "flat" batteries. And of course tire air "pressure", lacking an AIR DRYER in the supply side, introduces a whole shitload of cold, moist air into the "supply line" beginning at the Shrader valves where the "venturi effect" quickly "ices" them up further slowing if not stopping altogether any "jump starting". Anybody with a clue with "flat" batteries and/or empty air starting looking to "jump start" the truck on a "cold morning" and NOT smart enough to use a second running truck and its "gladhands" and AIR SYSTEM to "jump" it OR a "tire tapper" would be screwed no matter what if they weren't smart enough to use a FRACTION as much air "pressure" and TIME to "charge" the brake air reservoir(s) at 60ish psi vs. 120, release the parking brake and "roll start" the "dead" truck on a "cold morning" to make sure it WILL "fire" before ending up with a "dead" engine and a shitload of FLAT TIRES and really being "dead in the water" unable to "jump start" the POS using any "bush" method.
@deeremeyer17493 жыл бұрын
610 HP? ROFLMAO. Yeah. Mack had/has its own special way to measure "hp" and ultimately since it's TORQUE THAT TURNS THE TIRES and "horsepower" is a function of TORQUE and SPEED with SPEED being a "horsepower multiplier", a "610 hp" Mack V8 with a "high idle" and "rated speed" several hundred RPM faster than a "comparable" Caterpillar or Detroit or "electronic" Cummins (to a lesser extent) with the same "hp" - if there were such a thing "factory stock" - is not going to "outpower" the "competition" unless it's at some ridiculously high engine and truck speed legal only on interstate highways and it will fall on its face "lugging" side by side with far less "powerful" Cats and Detroits and to a lesser extent Cummins engines with a lot "less horsepower" but that make their rated hp at a realistic and sustainable and attainable engine speed. You'll also have to shitcan the V8 Mack, go with the "lowly" 6-cylinder engine and put a RoadRanger trans behind it to really "pull" with the "competition" and below "freeway speeds" a "small-block" 3176 or C11 Cat or 10.7 Detroit or to a lesser extent an M11 Cummins is going to eat the Bulldog's breakfast. Don't see many Macks on "freeways" for a reason. Their engine technology is "mechanical" era even when "electronic" and their "electronics" are "analog" and "electronic" governors on mechanical injection pumps only. Pre-"emissions" level "high tech" at best. Their propaganda sucks, too. Calling a 5-speed transmission with a 2-range "back box" with a "reverser" in the "back box" as well a "12-speed". Lol. Sure. It's a "12-speed" if you count "Neutral" and "Reverse" or Reverse "twice" even though you can't "split" Reverse. Macktards call it a "glorified Super 10" because they're...Macktards. Both Super 10s and 10-speeds are "13-speeds" if you count "L" and Reverse and "split" it. No way to actually get more than 11 out of a "12-speed" MaxiTorque. I suppose "neutral" counts in a Mack because you have to select it on the "splitter" and put the trans in "1" to operate PTOs. So it's "PTO speed". That makes "11 speeds". Reverse makes "12 speeds". And they call that a "heavy-duty" and "off-highway" transmission. With no way to "split" Reverse and get "Low Reverse" even though every "gear jammer" with half a brain in his head and half a day driving "off highway" and "starting out" in trucks loaded "in situ" on soft soil knows the BEST way to "move forward" without fucking things up powertrainwise is to FIRST go BACKWARD. Pushing a load is ALWAYS easier than pulling and backing up the tractor's "drivers" are PUSHING rather than PULLING the loaded trailer AND even the "box" on a straight truck given that the front "driver" with the power divider always "feels" maximum powertrain torque and is better equipped and constructed and positioned in the "powerflow" to "push" the majority of the "tandem" load. "Heavy-duty" Macks are so "rare" when you really get "off-highway" in the "modern era" they look "common" on-highway and THERE Western Stars easily outnumber them. And of course Mack "partnered" with Caterpillar on an all-Cat all-ELECTRONIC powertrain in its "Granite" vocational "off-highway" trucks. But by then Mack's "off-highway" reputation was beyond even Caterpillar's ability to salvage it.
@deeremeyer17493 жыл бұрын
No, you won't or at least shouldn't find a "Superliner" cab "on a Brockway too" since "Superliners" were SUPPOSED to be Brockway "models" but Brockway went tits up and Mack "inherited" the Superliner "model" as a result. Although given how "rare" real Superliners were and are "back in the day" in the good old USA where ALL the REAL ones were produced while "today" every other "post-R model" Mack you come across online "overseas" is a "Superliner" and supposedly "original" even when LAUGHABLY equipped with DAYTON instead of BUDD wheels on an "OTR" and supposedly "modern" truck, that same "Superliner" cab probably was/is on LOTS of "Brockways too". There is so much complete bullshit and mythology out there about Mack's it isn't even funny. Everything from gold Bulldogs ONLY being on "all Mack" trucks - Mack engine, trans and axles - even though it's on Macks with Mack engines and Eaton RoadRanger transmissions with Eaton axles to "Superliner" being a "model" and "all Mack" and the "ultimate off-highway trucks" and "high horsepower" rather than just a "trim level" and Mack's doomed attempt to go "OTR" with a "Class 8" semi tractor with a "full-width" passenger/team driver-friendly cab and "high horsepower" but "medium torque" at best. Cheap, cheese-dick KW W900A/Pete 358 "clones" at best if you're blind and stupid and when Paccar got Caterpillar to "modernize" the 1693 into the 3406 and "OTRize" the 3408 the "Superliner" and its "500-525 hp" V8s were freaking doomed. At least in the one and only real "competitive" and "free" market for OTR and "off highway" trucks in the world. They got only air-start Macks "down under" because any and all batteries would be "flat" on "new" trucks upon arrival "down under" months and months after being "transported" and who knows how many "cold starts" and minutes at most of run time "in transport" from factory to customs to port to port to customs to "importer". Not to mention terminal/cable/starter corrosion from "salt air". And "pilferage" once "down under" where 99% of the "citizens" are descended from convicts, after all. Air start also eliminates series-parallel switches and other electrical system "antiquities" necessary to get 6-volt and 12-volt and 24-volt "electrics" to peacefully co-exist when a manufacturer and/or importer "cut costs" by mixing and NOT matching components, systems etc from various "suppliers".
