AIOs have only rivaled high end CPU air coolers, but NZXT just changed that. The Kraken X53 liquid CPU cooler is the strongest cooler I’ve tested - by far. Is the age of air over?

UPDATE June 8 2020: Just heard from NZXT that they are planning to update the X-3 series to include a Y-splitter cable for the fans going forward, and the ability for current X-3 owners to get one free of charge. They haven't set an ETA yet due to current circumstances, but they expect it to be about a month. I'll update this comment when I hear more!

Nowadays it's mostly about RGB and aesthetics. Even though I sometimes catch myself flirting with AIO products, I always return to air cooling. In the long run, I expect an air cooler to be less of a hassle: it has no liquids, it's easy to maintain and you don't have to neglect cooling capabilities depending on the air cooler you go with.

I know this is an old post, but one of the main reasons to go with an AIO vs air cooling is the ability to work around it. The Noctua NH-D15 is a great air cooler, but do you want taller RAM? Nope. What about changing an m2 drive in the top spot of some boards? Gotta remove it. Like the aesthetics of your board? Don't get to see much of it as the cooler is MASSIVE. They both have their benefits but having the radiator away from the board really allows more freedom for components. RGB is pretty unimportant, but that's also a bonus if that's your thing. That said, you do need to install an AIO the right way (it's pretty idiot-proof, but some people do somehow have the pump at the top). I can't see myself going back to air cooling.

Great video! I have an H80i v2 and, overall, I feel like it performs well and looks cool. It works great with a CM N200 case too! I recommend it if you don't mind fan noise. Regarding noise while idling, I can hear the pump when things are quiet but the fans are inaudible. Under load, if the fans aren't maxed, the noise they make is reasonable for me. They're definitely not silent though. Some numbers: With the H80i v2, my i7-10700K idles around 40 C (The ambient temp might be 24-ish). At load, cold, it keeps the CPU (@ 4.66 GHz) in the 70-75 C range. It throttles to 4.33 GHz for some reason, I'm not sure why right now, but when it does the temperature goes down to around 65 C and very slowly rises. While heat saturated and transitioning from idle to full load, it can spike to over 80 C. After it throttles, it seems to gradually reduce to around 75 C. Edit: I just did a test out of curiosity. I limited the clock speed to 3.8 GHz to test the temperature. With a five minute Cinebench R20 test, the temperature didn't go over 59 C. I didn't change the fan curve so they ran at around 45%. I know it's a completely different processor but it's cool to see that the H80i v2, compared to your results, performed fairly well in this short test.
@ponchato
@ponchato 4 жыл бұрын
Hey that's cool, I love seeing people's real world numbers. I'm sure Intel's boost algorithm is thoroughly complicated to keep heat in check, maybe 4.33 GHz is just the conservative number it settles on for keeping it at a safe temperature.

You need a better cooler, buy a g12, use the h80 on the gpu and get a 280mm version for the cpu
@luchvk
@luchvk 4 жыл бұрын
@@techbuildspcs Thank you for the advice. I didn't know about that particular product and it's a good solution. However, I'm content with the H80i v2 as my CPU cooler. I do have a fairly robust cooling setup and both my CPU & GPU temperatures end up around 75 C with a full system stress test. Granted, I run my CPU stock. In my CPU-based benchmarks, the difference in performance from 4.3 Ghz to 4.7 Ghz is about 10% for an added 10 degrees C. Realistically for me, the performance difference isn't worth disabling throttling and my CPU is far from throttling with games.

Great review! I got the x53, but was disappointed they didn't include the PWM splitters (I understand the older x52 had them). I bought a 3-pack Noctua NA-SYC1 and hooked everything to my ASUS ROG b450-I. It's DEAD SILENT, idles at around 38C and the highest I saw it in "normal" load was 65C for my Ryzen 3900X.
@Swinkels88
@Swinkels88 2 жыл бұрын
Hi hmemcpy, I was wondering, did you put the radiator fans in the splitter, and than the end of the splitter in de cpu fan connector of the mother board? Or did you put both radiator fans and the 3-pin connector of the breakout cable set on the splitter, and then the end of the splitter in the cpu fan connector of the motherboard. I also have the X53 with no splitter. Right now I have the 3-pin connector of the breakout cable on the cpu fan connector of the motherboard, and each radiator fan on a separate sys fan connector on the motherboard. But I’m not sure if this is correct :D Could you please help me with this?

@@ShuffleToExpresss 212 was never designed nor meant for SFF so it's kinda mooted. Best here is up to the individual but it's a balance of performance vs needs (temps & noise), costs and usability/convenience. Do I want my CPU to run at 30C/40C at idle/load? Yes, but do I need it? No, I gladly make the trade for costs and usability as mentioned previously :)

@@NewYears1978 Short answer yes it's worth it, long answer it get's me a few degrees cooler. That being said, I upgraded slowly from a ton of budget parts to what I have now. @PietroSoft

@@ponchato Yeah, but when it happens, man, it is sad. The good thing of air is, little to no maintenance, if your fan dies you just replace it, if the pump dies, the whole thing end up in the trash. If the pump dies, the system just shutdown, and can cause serious damage to the CPU, if the fan dies on the air cooler, you have some time to turn off the PC without killing the CPU.

@@PietroSoft you realise that CPUs have thermometers inside and a thermal shut-down for this reason right? It will turn off way faster than you could react by pulling thr power.

@@aardvarkbiscuit2677 the liquid was dried up. Funny thing is NZXT in Vietnam doesn't support that, and it's still in warranty (I've only used it for like 6 months). I traded all my NZXT components after that. F*** NZXT.

10 year warranty would be impressive, 6 year not so much, my AIO has a 5 year so 6 year isn't much of a stretch for an AIO with huge claims.
