A 'mehfil' is not exactly a 'crowd'. It is a gathering of people, typically for a cultural event such as a dance show or singing session. In this instance, the mehfil being referred to is a 'mushaira' - a recitatation of urdu couplets. This becomes clear from the reference to 'Shama'. 'Shama' is not a 'candle'. It is a lamp that is passed around from poet to poet during a mushaira, when it's their turn to recite a couplet. 'Shama' is also a popular girls name in India and Pakistan, especially among Muslim. Even today we have many music directors and song composers who are amazing but they can't put out good original music because bollywood only wants garbage apparently. The sad thing is these composers can STILL create magical songs, but they aren't given the opportunity. Nowadays they're all running after likes and views - that's why they limit themselves to catchy songs but most of these songs will not stand the test of time, unlike bollywood oldies of the 60s-80s
