He was acquitted from the criminal charges but everyone turned his back on him after that, either because they knew he did it or because he was broke, or both. And there was a civil trial looming, which he knew he would lose (burden of proof is much less AND he had no more money to pay for fancy lawyers). His house was foreclosed, he had no friends left, he signed so much stuff his signature was worth about $5, and so on. So he decided to write a book confessing how he did it, but adding the if to 'if I did it', in a desperate attempt to make some money. When the Goldmans acquired the rights and royalties to his confessional book it wasn't a huge victory but it was at least a victory as there was little else to take from him. After that, Simpson became so desperate for money he went along with the armed robbery of some memorabilia which eventually landed him in jail for many years, after all.
