brilliant teacher, thank you. Only thing I would add is that spectator ions are ions that are on both sides of the equation, but also are in the same state (s,l,g,aq). The last bit wasn't specified.

@kydwykqyd Aq is aqueous, that is the substance has been diluted with water. You will usually find aqueos states for ionic substances. L stands for liquid. Its is the pure substance in molten state. I may have made errors as i am a student too.

What is the difference between (aq) and (l) states? And if the question does not show the state symbols for the equation, how would we identify them in their states?

We do not split solids, liquids and gases into ions. When writing ionic equations, we only split those in aqueous state. (aq)
