Classic Anglican Hymn. I was Greek Orthodox but attended an Anglican grammar school down under. I was the church organist. This is a master piece

For me this is the most powerful of all the Christmas songs. It really is a prayer to amazing music and the words penetrate deep into my soul. I’m a lapsed Anglican but this hits different in a good but powerful way. 🙏✌️to all

An American, Phillips Brooks, wrote the lyrics in 1868 and the original tune was ST. LOUIS by Lewis H. Redner. Later CHRISTMAS CAROL was the tune used. When the song traveled to Britain the tune FOREST GREEN was used. It is a traditional English melody. I prefer the Forest Green rendition used here---so majestic!

FOREST GREEN is IMO the best melody ever composed.

As a North American I'm listening in for the different (to what I am used to) tune.

The hymn tune is called “Forest Green.” The tune that is more popular in North America is called “St. Louis”

This isn't a North American thing, I'm Canadian and specifically sought out this version because I was singing it in my head even though I also know the other version

As an American, I was confused as to why this version had different music than what I recognized. As it turns out, the US and UK use a very different score to sing the same lyrics. The Song was written by an American in the late 19th century, but when it travelled across the pond in the 1900’s, it was given a more traditionally ‘British sounding’ melody.

Isn’t that funny, I grew up in the uk and I’ve never heard it any other way, I always recognise it when the salvation army’s brass band play it at Christmas time. My boyfriend is American so I’ll be interested to see if I recognise it when I visit at Christmas time!

British hymn tunes are much prettier than American ones. I've noticed that all along.

This is the version I know, but there is a more popular version normally sung. Just realised I made a mistake - this is probably the best known version, but not the one I know best (and most enjoy). That's the Wengen/ Christmas Carol version (although not sung by a choir as far as i remember).

The English sing it to a more English sounding tune. There are actually a few other hymns that are played to different melodies on either side of the 'pond', but this is probably the most well known.
