It comes down to personal tastes .Hayley 's voice which is pitch perfect .very uncommon super pure little to none vibralo is tuned perfectly and needs not the dramatic sounds . I happen to love the pure pitch perfect soprano voice with exceptional high range this combonation is very rare in the human voice and cant be taught . her sound puts me with the Gods and heavens above. BTW she is making big bucks

Hayley you are a credit to our country and you sing this beautiful aria the way you feel it. I find it so sad to hear some of the scathing comments made by other people. the well known opera singer who so rudely called her a pop opera singer. sure she isn't really an opera singer per se but she has a lovely voice and she has never lost her sweet and down to earth attitude. we are all allowed our opinions but some of them I wonder just how much they understand music. mmmm.

Whatever the technical merits of singers, and I see we have a few purists here, the most important thing you can do with a song, apart from singing it well, is to make it your own. This (young!) girl sings beautifully, with a grace and purity that marks it out as truly individual. The way she places notes so gently is wonderful. Let's hope she doesn't do a Charlotte Church and squander it all...

If you understand the story behind this song , you would find that it is about a young girl who is telling her father that she wants to be with a young man that her father does not approve of - so it makes more sense for a very young woman to sing this song than a more mature woman who would probably not be living in her father's house. That is what Puccini probably originally had in his mind , so this young woman's voice fits the original story.

We're more or less on the same wavelength. Carmen was given to me in LP form as payment for a job I did as a teenager, and I still have it nearly 60 years later, and Aida is the only one I have heard at Covent Garden when I visited England after years in Africa In 1960. I also think opera composers like Verdi and Puccini added an extra dimension to sacred music - for which they were criticised - but to me it's fine that young singers also see the beauty of music which is more demanding.

After listening to this a 2nd time ( like finally scratching an itch that you haven't been able to reach for some time) It strikes me there is probably a "back story that might prove interesting behind Puccini's writing of this song.....if I ever find it....I'll come back and share. Such lovely elements from Hayley'sn voice to the chord structure and movement. Just all around perfect AND touching! I know within the opera it has something to do with a Daughter's relation to her Father.

These days the majority of opera singers are good-looking. Just to clarify: I am not criticizing Hayley here. She isn't an opera singer, she doesn't pretend to be one, she does her own thing and she gives joy to a lot of people.

You have violated God's Law, which He wrote in your heart; your own conscience condemns you (who has not violated their conscience?). Therefore, you deserve "the fine" - the punishment of hell. But God does not want to give you justice. God is good, kind, and merciful. He wants to give you mercy! That's why Jesus Christ (God in the flesh) died on the cross. You violated the Law, but Christ paid your fine. He suffered in your place, as your Substitute, and rose again after three days. Repent and place all your faith in the Person and work of Jesus Christ, and you will be saved from the wrath of God

@@rebeca5270 Are you nuts or a troll? Insane asylums give internet privileges these days? 1. You are answering an 11-year old comment. Actually, not even a comment, but a reply, hence @ in front, but you are probably not smart enough to figure it out. Since YT changed the threading of comments since them, the original thread is lost, so you have no clue of the context. Some people involved in the discussion closed their YT accounts since then, so their comments are lost as well. 2. Since when Jesus care about what one says about a particular singer or the singer's profession i.e. if they are opera singer or pop singer or classical crossover singers? 3. How is saying that someone isn't practicing a particular profession is an offense to anybody? 4. Do you even know what opera is or who an opera singer is? Ever been to an opera or set foot in an opera theater?

@@rebeca5270 Are you a troll or just nuts? Replying to 11-year old comments - actually replies to comments out of context of the original thread - and posting non-sequiturs? "violated God's law" by explaining to someone the difference between professions and genres? FYI -11 years ago, KZbin used a different system for threading discussions. At some point later, they changed their system and all threads with comments and replies became individual comments albeit with @ in front which indicated replies. Oh, and FYI - saying someone is a pop singer or an opera singer or explaining the difference isn't an insult, it's like explaining the difference between a ballet dancer and contemporary dancer. Both good in their own genres, but different. Now go and take your meds.

OMG it is here too, CC and Opera is about to go to war, I googled "O Mio Babbino Caro" because I wanted to compare other singers to how Evancho sings it and whether its and opera singer such as Renee Fleming or CC as Hayley Westenra there seems to be some type of war going on. To tell the truth I couldn't tell just by listening to different singers if they are CC or Opera. Have to say Hayley sound very good one of the best to my ears.

Actually, her pitch is spot on, and I've heard plenty of opera singers climbing up to their notes instead of hitting them first time, as well as having vibrato like a pneumatic drill, which is offputting, Some of them hang on to their careers long after they should have been put out to pasture! It's a nice change to hear a voice like Hayley's, even though she is not, and doesn't claim to be, classically trained. She is not racing - she does fine, thanks.

Thank you for being civil. There's no doubt in my mind that she has had training in basic voice technique, but she has not had classical training. Opera singers teach basic voice as well. I commend her intentions. Mirusia Louwerse is trying to do the same thing, but she is fully trained opera singer. It is still my opinion that this repertoire doesn't suit her thin voice. People can and will disagree and that's ok. You are free to enjoy, but please let others have their opinions.

It's not a "plaintive song" - it's a girl who is in love and is trying to convince her father to do a favor for the boy's parents so that they agree to the marriage. In the first phrases she describes her love for the boy and her desire for marriage. In the last phrases she threatens to throw herself into the river if she can't marry the boy and says "I am suffering, I am in torment, daddy pity, pity". She may mean it or she may be manipulating her daddy, but she needs to convince him.
How remarkably beautiful your sentiments are! To share, as a child I once was blessed with hearing the Blessed Mother laugh! Her laughter was the sound of beautiful chimes. This occurred in church during Mass where I repeatedly pondered Her clothes ,blue and white comparing them to another almost identical statue. I figured they were both statues of the Blessed Mother, but that was how she changed her clothes. She told me to ask my mother. The second statue was in fact St Margaret.❤

When I first heard Jackie, on AGT last year, and people were going crazy about her, I thought to myself..."is she really that special?" Well, now, after listening to every female classical music singer I could find...child and adult...I've concluded: Yes...she's really that special. Of course, it's always subjective. And it's not just the voice. To me, it's the emotion, passion and delivery, as well. Hayley comes close...as well as Sissel. But again, it is an individual preference.
