O-rings and how to measure them

OK pulled out my dial caliper..came up with the numbers OD 2.525, ID 2.10, Cross section .210 ---- went to Mcmasters and found my item, I thought wow I was spot on...ID, check OD check...then the money shot...I thought if the cross section measures out to .210--- I am spot on...lol I was spot on.... my number is Dash 330 (Pool Union O-Rings American Standard pipe company). Going to save a fortune rebuilding some of my tractor hydraulics (instead of buying the rebuilding kits). Mcmasters wanted $.28 ea for qty 50 ($14.28) ( (+ shipping). Amazon had them for $1.80 ea for qty of 5. (Amazon had a 6x mark up from Mcmasters but no biggie). Thank You ......you are one of the "very few" I subscribe to YOU ROCK !!!

I'm a long-time machine designer and instrument scientist (retired). Although I have many times specified an O-ring for a custom shaft seal, and was aware of the English and Metric systems defining their sizes, once I retired to my private shop, the physical realities of working with things such as this have become much more important. You have a fine teaching skill. Thank you for producing this excellent video covering the practical side of O-ring maintenance. What about the metric sizes?

Thanks man, I have an airsoft gas pistol that has gas leaking out of the magazine. The O-Ring was tarnished and I needed to replace it and didn't know what size it was.

Another option is to take the O-rings to your local plumbing supply house. Call first to make sure they sell to general public. They will size them and get you new for pretty cheap. Or use a caliper or ruler to get the measurements to size them yourself. Also sometimes you can google your filter brand and the word "parts" or "size" and might be able to find the sizes online. Once in a while you can get lucky.

Thanks for the compliment Frank. As for metric O-rings which are more and more common in things like newer air tools and other pneumatic and hydraulic items since most are made overseas. I have seen some metric measuring tools that look like a tape measurer. I cheated a little and found a company that sold O-rings individually for cheap. So I ordered 1 of every size up to a certain point and just use them to compare. Or if the old O-ring is in good shape I will use a caliper to measure them.

What if you don't have the original O-ring ? You measure the inside of the groove and then ? If you don't know the width how do you know ? What material is best for pneumatic nail guns . I went on McMaster-Carr and can't find that explanation of o-rings and uses . Can you help me out to rebuild a Basso BAT-50 16 gauge straight nailer that needs rings . It's probably from 1983 . They look like BEA guns

For the tiny ones I use the blue slide gauge which has pictures printed on it of the smaller O-rings so you just set the old O-rings on the pictures until you find the match.

I noticed you mentioned you had a 7.3 powerstroke an was wondering if you can tell me the sizes of the o-rings used to rebuild my fuel bowl an I can't get a straight answer from the forums they want me to buy the kits but I can get the blue military spec orings from my buddy just need the sizes before I tear my bowl apart cause its my daily driver thanks for you time

When fitting for an o-ring, should the o-ring slightly stretch around the object for a snug fit? Or should it fit exactly around it as shown in the vid?

It's hard to believe but I have thousands of O rings and seals I purchased from McMaster over the years that were wrong for hydraulic jacks over the years that I never sent back. Where did you get that cone? I want one!

Looks like my memory was a little off! McMaster has the "deluxe" cone for 52 dollars which is where I got mine. The slide gauge is only 22 dollars. The downside to buying from McMaster is they deal mostly with large companies that spend big dollars every year with them. So while they have almost everything and will sell to us small guys it's not really worth their time to offer support. Buna N says it's good for water and salt water.

I have to measure an O-ring to the fourth decimal place for thickness. Would a Micrometer be recommended? What style of tip should be used? Extreme accuracy is required. We are using a vision system for the ID.

what makes a Viton better than Buna o ring? my application is craft, so since there is no moving part constantly rubbing into, i suppose the cheaper grade will do just fine, of course Viton has better luster and will not crack like the Buna N type, but the cost over Buna type is almost double.

Viton is the Dupont name for FKM material. FKM material is much more chemically resistant than Buna N. There are compatibility charts online which can tell you which is appropriate for your individual use. The FKM o-ring will be much more expensive as it is more of a specialty item used in only harsh chemical conditions.

+Vapealution In the UK you would specify the size as 3 x 1 (inside dia x section dia) you would need to check the material though

Ok , I have an O- ring missing approx 1/3 of it. How big is it? LOL ! I have the part it goes around it measures 1.59" and the measurement of the part it goes in 1.75" I have done a ton of measuring and math to figure it out. The crazy thing is how the o-ring companies measure wall thickness. That 1.625" o-ring can be had in several different diameters They are Non -Standard measurements unfortunately.If you are missing the o-ring you need to order at least 3 different wall thickness o-rings to get the right fit. I think I finally have it after hours of work and research. What a PITA if your o-ring is missing or missing a piece.

some tips about orings you should know never use a black rubber oring on a moving part,,,as rubber is very grippy.. never lube orings with a oil based product,,as it makes them swell, allways use silicone unless the oring is a non oil based type,, know the size of the groove that your going to fit your oring into,,from a engineering point of view , this is how you would size a oring,,this is most important for oring seals on a moving part.. allso know that orings of the same size are never the same,, there allways a slight difference,, this is where sizing proper comes in to its own,,if your looking to cut down on friction and how much they stick enjoy
